Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the cauda equina in an elderly patient. Case report.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are aggressive neoplasms composed predominantly of undifferentiated cells that show evidence of neural differentiation. Although their classification remains disputed, PNETs are recognized as primary tumors in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. These rare tumors usually occur in children or young adults and are typically metastatic to the spinal cord. The authors report the case of a 70-year-old man with no significant medical history, in whom a peripheral PNET was demonstrated that, based on clinical and imaging findings, manifested as a

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) as second malignancy after treatment of Hodgkin's disease.

Hodgkin's disease survivors are at an increased risk of developing second malignant neoplasms including secondary bone tumors. Common secondary bone tumors are osteogenic sarcoma and fibrosarcoma. Secondary primitive neuroectodermal tumor is extremely rare in this group. We present below, a rare case of secondary PNET in an 8-year-old child with Hodgkin's disease which developed unusually early outside the radiation portal and discuss potential factors responsible for its causation.

Successful treatment of primitive neuroectodermal tumor-associated microangiopathy with multiple bone metastases.

We report here a 16-year-old male with primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET)-associated probable microangiopathy with multiple bone metastases. Laboratory findings excluded the possibility of amegakaryocytic or immune thrombocytopenia and/or disseminated intravascular coagulation. He was first treated with plasma-exchange (PE), followed by platelet transfusions, steroid pulse therapy and combined chemotherapy. PE and steroid pulse therapy reduced his plasma CRP level. Combined chemotherapy drastically increased his platelet count until it had almost normalized without further transfusion. The

Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the ureter: a case report and review of the literature.

Extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) is a rare soft tissue tumor of childhood usually found in the extremities. The authors present the case of a 17-year-old girl who presented with right flank pain and hematuria and during operation was found to have a right ureteral mass. The histopathologic, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, and cytogenetic characteristics of the excised mass were consistent with extraosseous ES/PNET. This is the first known reported case of extraosseous ES/ PNET of the ureter. The pathologic features and clinical management of this cas

[Two children with unusual causes of torticollis: primitive neuroectodermal tumor and Grisel's syndrome].

Two children were presented with a torticollis. One, a 2-year-old girl, had a primitive neuroectodermal tumour of the cervical spinal cord which could not be radically removed surgically (the patient died three days later), the other, a 9-year-old boy, had the syndrome of Grisel. He was treated with antibiotics, head traction and atlantoaxial posterior spondylodesis. Acquired torticollis is a frequent innocent symptom in children with cervical lymphadenopathy following a respiratory tract infection. These cases demonstrate that additional investigation should not be delayed if relief of sympto

A continuous cell line (KK-2) from a supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor.

Tumor tissue located in the occipital lobe with hemorrhage was obtained from a 19-year-old patient. Histological examination indicated it to consist of undifferentiated small, round cells without neuronal or glial differentiation, and possibly to be a type of primitive neuroectodermal tumor. The tumor cells were cultured for 3 years and a continuous cell line (KK-2) was established. KK-2 was transplantable to nude mice. With immunocytochemistry, neuron-specific enolase, protein gene product 9.5, vimentin, TUJ1 (a monoclonal antibody specific for neuron-associated class III beta-tubulin isotype

Intrasellar primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) in familial retinoblastoma: a variant of "trilateral retinoblastoma".

An infant with bilateral familial retinoblastomas was found at age 6 months to have a large mass within the region of the sella turcica. The histology, immunoreactivity and ultrastructure of the tumor showed primitive neuroectodermal cells. A small number of cells showed positive immunostaining to retinal S antigen. This represents a rare form of so-called trilateral retinoblastoma. In most cases of trilateral retinoblastoma, the intracranial non-metastatic tumor is within the pineal gland. The occurrence of such a tumor in the region of sella turcica is very unusual and its possible significa

Case report and review of the literature regarding management of primary uterine primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET).

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) arise primarily from the uterus, are rare, and lack consensus management recommendations. We present a case report of a patient with stage IVB uterine PNET and a comprehensive literature review on the topic. Fifty-three papers including 90 cases of PNET were identified with an additional case report from our institution included. Data was collected on patient presentation, demographics, oncologic information, and survival. Median age of diagnosis was 51 years old, with most patients presenting with stage III disease. Most treatment regimens included hyst

Radiation is an important component of multimodality therapy for pediatric non-pineal supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors.

PURPOSE: To review a historical cohort of pediatric patients with supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (sPNET), to clarify the role of radiation in the treatment of these tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifteen children aged <18 years with non-pineal sPNETs diagnosed between 1992 and 2006 were identified. Initial therapy consisted of surgical resection and chemotherapy in all patients and up-front radiotherapy (RT) in 5 patients. Five patients had RT at the time of progression, and 5 received no RT whatever. Kaplan-Meier estimates of overall survival were then calculated. RESULTS: T

Characterization of testicular embryonic-type neuroectodermal tumor and embryonic-type neuroectodermal tissue admixed with mature neuro-glial tissue using a broad immunohistochemical panel.

Embryonic-type neuroectodermal tumor (ENT) is a somatic-type malignancy characterized by overgrowth of embryonic-type neuroectodermal tissue (EtNT). In germ cell tumors, EtNT is frequently intermingled with other components that may exhibit significant morphologic overlap [mature neuro-glial tissue (MNGT), nephroblastomatous tissues, and primitive endodermal-type glands]. Therefore, the quantification of EtNT (crucial for the diagnosis of ENT) can be challenging. In this study, we investigated the immunohistochemical profile of ENT, EtNT, and MNGT using a broad immunohistochemical panel. We fo

A case report of malignant neuroectodermal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract without common gene fusion in a soft tissue tumor.

BACKGROUND: Malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor (GNET) is extremely rare in soft tissue sarcoma and occurs mainly in the small intestine of young adults, without sex predilection. Local recurrence and metastasis are common in GNET, resulting in a poor prognosis. GNETs are histologically and immunohistochemically similar to many sarcomas, especially clear cell sarcoma (CCS), making their identification difficult. The majority of GNET cases have EWSR1 gene rearrangements, which can be characterized at the genetic level and provide important clues for diagnosis of GNETs. However, ver

Radiological findings in children with primary mediastinal Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumors: a retrospective case series study.

The goal of this study was to summarize the radiological findings and clinical characteristics of mediastinal Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) in children. A retrospective review was conducted on the clinical and imaging data of 6 children with primary mediastinal ES/PNET that was confirmed by pathology. There were 3 girls and 3 boys in this study, aged between 2 and 11 years old. The tumors exhibited a range of maximum diameters for each child, spanning from 3.8 to 16.0 cm, and the boundaries of 6 tumors were unclear. Furthermore, the tumors were located in the posterio

Are clinical parameters valuable prognostic factors in childhood primitive neuroectodermal tumors? A multivariate analysis of 105 cases.

BACKGROUND: Medulloblastoma is one of the most frequent brain tumors in children. Long-term survivors are often confronted with serious late sequelae, caused by the therapy. Therefore, prognostic markers must be identified that allow the children to be assigned to different treatment schedules according to their predicted outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical data of 110 children with a medulloblastoma or central primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET), that were admitted to the Emma Kinderziekenhuis in Amsterdam were analyzed by univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: In univaria

I-131 MIBG scintigraphy of neuroectodermal tumors. Comparison between I-131 MIBG and In-111 DTPA-octreotide.

An account is given of the results observed with I-131 MIBG scintigraphy in four patients (1 bladder pheochromocytoma, 3 neuroblastomas) chosen on account of their particular clinical and diagnostic interest from a series of 41 apudoma patients examined by means of this technique. In the first patient, the unusual site of the tumor in the posterior wall of the bladder meant that its detection by I-131 MIBG was only possible after catheterization of the bladder. In the second patient, uptake in the metastasis was only evident after removal of the primary tumor. In the third patient, the scintis

Intra-axial endophytic primitive neuroectodermal tumors in the pons: clinical, radiological, and immunohistochemical aspects in four children.

We present the clinical findings, radiological aspects, operative results, and histopathological features of four typical primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) located in the pontine region in children. All the tumors had an endophytic intra-axial growth pattern. All the children had a short history of severe neurological deficits with involvement of the cranial nerves and pyramidal tract. MRI did not reveal any common feature of malignancy. Compared to our successful experience in operations of intra-axial endophytic brainstem tumors in a total of 32 children, the outcome was poor: all 4 ch

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the cerebrum and cerebellum: absence of t(11;22) translocation by RT-PCR analysis.

Cytogenetic analysis of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) has demonstrated a consistent primary chromosomal change characterized by a reciprocal translocation t(11;22)(q24:q12). In the central nervous system PNETs, most frequent of which are the cerebellar medulloblastomas, the most prevalent chromosomal abnormalities include deletions and unbalanced translocations. The recent cloning of the t(11;22) breakpoint has revealed the fusion of the human FLI-1 gene on chromosome 11q24 with a gene EWS on chromosome 22q12 and permitted detection of fusion transcripts. Primary ovarian peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor presented with breast metastasis; Case report.

Ewing sarcoma family tumors (ESFT) pose diagnostic challenges, which largely depend on the primary site of involvement and tumor stage. Despite advancements in treatment, metastatic ESFTs remain associated with poor outcomes. This case describes a 21-year-old woman who, in July 2022, presented with a left breast mass identified through ultrasound and CT scan, along with abdominal distention. A biopsy of the breast mass confirmed metastatic extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma. Further imaging revealed an ovarian mass, with subsequent biopsy confirming ovarian origin as extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma. The
