Neuroacanthocytosis syndromes are rare inherited neurodegenerative disorders, characterized by the presence of acanthocytes. Among them, Choreoacanthocytosis and McLeod syndrome stand out, sharing similarities with Huntington's disease, including choreic movement disorders, psychiatric symptoms, and cognitive decline. The case described involves a 36-year-old patient with cognitive deficits, involuntary movements, and ataxic gait. Cranial computed tomography revealed accentuation of cortical sulci and cisterns and atrophy of the caudate nucleus with ex-vacuo dilatation of the anterior horns of

A 20-month-old female, not immunized with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, was admitted due to a four-day history of fever and cough. In the past three months, she presented respiratory infections, weight loss and enlarged cervical lymph nodes. On day two of admission, she displayed drowsiness and positive Romberg's sign; cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) workout revealed 107/ul cells, low glucose and high protein levels. Ceftriaxone and acyclovir were initiated, and she was transferred to our tertiary hospital. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed punctiform focal areas of restricted diffus

Moyamoya angiopathy (MMA) is a rare condition characterized by steno-occlusion of terminal portions of the internal carotid arteries and/or their proximal branches with the formation of collateral vessels network (moyamoya vessels). These changes result in chronic ischemia of the brain parenchyma with subsequent serious cerebrovascular accidents. The prognosis of MMA could be dramatically improved if the diagnosis and assessment are prompt and accurate. It is also crucial to define the indications, optimal timing, volume, and tactics of revascularization surgery, as well as longitudinal observ

A variety of Magnetic Resonance (MR) and nuclear medicine (NM) techniques have been used in symptomatic and presymptomatic SCA2 gene carriers to explore,in vivo, the physiopathological biomarkers of the neurological dysfunctions characterizing the associated progressive disease that presents with a cerebellar syndrome, or less frequently, with a levodopa-responsive parkinsonian syndrome. Morphometry performed on T1-weighted images and diffusion MR imaging enable structural and microstructural evaluation of the brain in presymptomatic and symptomatic SCA2 gene carriers, in whom they show the ty

Background and Purpose- We aimed to define the neuroimaging determinants of poststroke cognitive performance and their relative contributions among a spectrum of magnetic resonance imaging markers, including lesion burden and strategic locations. Methods- We prospectively included patients with stroke from the GRECogVASC study (Groupe de Réflexion pour l'Évaluation Cognitive Vasculaire) who underwent 3-T magnetic resonance imaging and a comprehensive standardized battery of neuropsychological tests 6 months after the index event. An optimized global cognitive score and neuroimaging markers, in

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative, clinically heterogeneous syndrome pathologically overlapping with frontotemporal dementia. To date, therapeutic trials in animal models have not been able to predict treatment response in humans, and the revised ALS Functional Rating Scale, which is based on coarse disability measures, remains the gold-standard measure of disease progression. Advances in neuroimaging have enabled mapping of functional, structural, and molecular aspects of ALS pathology, and these objective measures may be uniquely sensitive to the detectio

The mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) disorders are rare lysosomal storage disorders caused by mutations in lysosomal enzymes involved in glycosaminoglycan (GAG) degradation. The resulting intracellular accumulation of GAGs leads to widespread tissue and organ dysfunction. In addition to somatic signs and symptoms, patients with MPS can present with neurological manifestations such as cognitive decline, behavioral problems (e.g. hyperactivity and aggressiveness), sleep disturbances, and/or epilepsy. These are associated with significant abnormalities of the central nervous system (CNS), including wh

Structural neuroimaging of athletes who have sustained a sports-related concussion (SRC) can be viewed as either standard clinical imaging or with advanced neuroimaging methods that quantitatively assess brain structure. Negative findings from conventional computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are the norm in SRC. Nonetheless, these conventional measures remain the first line of neuroimaging of the athlete as they do detect clinically significant pathologies, when present, such as hemorrhagic abnormalities in the form of hematomas, contusions and mircobleeds along with r

The brain combines visual, vestibular and proprioceptive information to distinguish between self- and world motion. Often these signals are complementary and indicate that the individual is moving or stationary with respect to the surroundings. However, conflicting visual motion and vestibular cues can lead to ambiguous or false sensations of motion. In this study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to explore human brain activation when visual and vestibular cues were either complementary or in conflict. We combined a horizontally moving optokinetic stimulus with caloric irrigation

Restoration of motor function following stroke involves reorganization of motor output through intact pathways, with compensatory brain activity likely variable by task. One class of motor tasks, those involved in self-care, is particularly important in stroke rehabilitation. Identifying the brain areas that are engaged in self-care and how they reorganize after stroke may enable development of more effective rehabilitation strategies. We piloted a paradigm for functional MRI assessment of self-care activity. In two groups, young adults and older adults, two self-care tasks (buttoning and zipp

Infectious and inflammatory processes of the intracranial compartment often result in acute clinical presentations. The possible causes are legion. Clues to the diagnosis involve clinical presentation, laboratory analysis, and neuroimaging. This article reviews some of the salient factors in understanding intracranial infection/ inflammation, including pathophysiology and neuroimaging protocols/findings, and provides some examples and a few "pearls and pitfalls."

The TMAs are a group of microvascular occlusive disorders characterized by thrombocytopenia and intravascular hemolysis. Literature review reveals a spectrum of neuroimaging findings, including a single case report of multifocal hemorrhagic infarctions. We present a series of 12 patients with TMA demonstrating a similar pattern of multifocal cortical and subcortical hemorrhagic infarctions.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to review the emergent neuroimaging findings of alcohol-related CNS nontraumatic disorders. Alcohol (ethanol) promotes inflammatory processes, increases DNA damage, and creates oxidative stress. In addition, the accompanying thiamine deficiency may lead to Wernicke encephalopathy. Associated changes in serum osmolarity may lead to acute demyelination.
CONCLUSION: Alcohol-related encephalopathies can be life-threatening conditions but can be prevented or treated, if recognized.

The detrimental effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the developing brain include structural brain anomalies as well as cognitive and behavioral deficits. Initial neuroimaging studies of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed previous autopsy reports of overall reduction in brain volume and central nervous system (CNS) disorganization, with specific structural abnormalities of the corpus callosum, cerebellum, caudate, and hippocampus. Advances in neuroimaging techniques have allowed detection of regional increases in cortical thickness and g

UNLABELLED: Much has been written recently about the relative merits and demerits of fetal imaging with ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Unfortunately, the arguments often generate more heat than light. We attempted to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each modality from the literature, and to arrive at some practical recommendations on when to use which imaging modality. In conclusion, combining neurosonography and MRI is mostly redundant, but occasionally complementary. Both are operator dependant and neither technique obviates the need for a thorough knowledge of norm

GM1 gangliosidosis is an autosomal recessive glycosphingolipid storage disease caused by defects in the enzyme beta-galactosidase. Three clinical forms (infantile-, juvenile-, and adult-onset) of the disease are recognized. Patients with infantile GM1 gangliosidosis present at birth or shortly thereafter with somatic and bony changes, followed by severe neurological deterioration ultimately leading to death within the first 2 years of life. We present the brain CT, MRI and MR spectroscopy (MRS) findings in a 17-month-old Turkish girl with infantile GM1 gangliosidosis. Neuroimaging findings in

Imaging occupies an important role in the investigation of dementia and neurodegenerative disease. The role of imaging in prion disease used to be one of exclusion of other conditions. Over the past decade, the non-invasive nature of MRI, the improved range of magnetic resonance sequences and the availability of clinical and neuropathological correlation have led to a more prominent position of MRI and its inclusion in the diagnostic criteria for variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. As experience of imaging in human prion disease increases, patterns of change related to strain and genotype may i

The terms posterior reversible leukoencephalopathy, reversible posterior cerebral edema syndrome, and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) all refer to a clinicoradiologic entity characterized by headaches, confusion, visual disturbances, seizures, and posterior transient changes on neuroimaging. Clinical findings are not sufficiently specific to readily establish the diagnosis; in contrast, magnetic resonance imaging pattern is often characteristic and represents an essential component of the diagnosis of PRES. Typical lesions predominate in the posterior white matter, with som
