Microalgae-mediated treatment of steel industry reverse osmosis concentrate integrated with flue gas carbon fixation: From laboratory selection to pilot-scale verification.

To address the dual environmental challenges of CO2 emissions and reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate in the steel industry, this study developed an integrated microalgae-based treatment strategy. The strategy consisted of two sequential phases, including laboratory-scale screening of microalgal strains and subsequent pilot-scale validation under real industrial conditions. Eight microalgal strains were initially evaluated using RO concentrate and simulated flue gas (20 % CO2), among which Chlorella LJ34 exhibited superior performance in biomass production (1.26 g/L dry weight), nutrient removal

Influence of nitrogen addition on soil respiration and soil properties in urban forests in Hefei city in China.

With the continuous development of urbanization, nitrogen deposition has affected the regeneration capacity of urban forest soil. This study focused on Quercus acutissima Carruth forest in a southern city Hefei in China. The effects of different nitrogen addition rates on both the soil respiration rate and the soil properties of urban forests were studied. In addition, the effects of seasonal changes on soil respiration were also analyzed. The experimental results showed that low nitrogen addition rate (5 g·m-2·yr-1) increased soil respiration rate by about 11% in summer, but decreased it by a

Nitrogen regulation in polyester-based carbons and adsorption of gaseous benzene and ethyl acetate.

Nitrogen doping effectively improves the adsorption properties of activated carbons towards volatile organic compounds (VOCs); however, the role of nitrogen elements with various chemical valence states need further evaluation. In this work, waste polyester fabrics were used as a low-cost source to prepare activated carbon, and melamine, pyridine, dimethylamine, and pyrrole were selected as nitrogen sources to compare their nitrogen-doping ability. The adsorption of low-concentration benzene and ethyl acetate on the resultant carbons and the effects of nitrogen, including its valence states an

Lotus japonicus CLV1-Like Receptor HAR1 Promotes Nitrogen Utilisation and Growth Under Non-Symbiotic Conditions.

Legumes establish mutualistic symbiosis with nitrogen (N)-fixing bacteria, which allows them to utilise atmospheric N2. Because the maintenance of symbiosis requires abundant carbon (C) sources, legumes regulate the balance between carbon consumption and nitrogen acquisition by systemically controlling the nodule number through CLAVATA1 (CLV1)-like receptors. In Lotus japonicus, the CLV1-like receptor HYPERNODULATION ABERRANT ROOT FORMATION1 (HAR1) acts in shoots to regulate root nodulation and contributes to symbiotic C/N coordination. This raises the possibility that HAR1 may also influence

Potassium deficiency decreases the capacity for urea synthesis and markedly increases ammonia in rats.

Our study provides novel findings of experimental hypokalemia reducing urea cycle functionality and thereby severely increasing plasma ammonia. This is pathophysiologically interesting because plasma ammonia increases during hypokalemia by a hitherto unknown mechanism, which may be particular important in relation to the unexplained link between hypokalemia and hepatic encephalopathy. Potassium deficiency decreases gene expression, protein synthesis, and growth. The urea cycle maintains body nitrogen homeostasis including removal of toxic ammonia. Hyperammonemia is an obligatory trait of liver

Iron-manganese synergistic enhanced denitrification in slow-release carbon-based fillers: Mechanisms and performance.

Agricultural waste offers economic and environmental benefits as a slow-release carbon source for denitrification; however, its inherent release of ammonia nitrogen limits its effectiveness. In this study, a novel solid-phase slow-release carbon filler was developed by doping Fe3O4 and MnO2 oxides into a corn cob matrix. Experimental results showed that the CC-Fe&Mn group achieved nitrate nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen removal rates of 98.52 % and 85.09 %, respectively, with significantly improved efficiency and the shortest reactor startup time. Mechanistic analysis indicated that the Fe-Mn ox

Effects of different iron compounds on the acclimation of Feammox sludge: Nitrogen-iron transformation, sludge physicochemical properties, and microbial communities.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled with Fe(III) reduction (Feammox) plays a critical role in the natural nitrogen cycle, but the differential regulatory mechanisms of various iron sources that influence Feammox sludge acclimation remain systematically unexplored in wastewater treatment. In this study, four iron compounds (FeCl3, Fe2O3, Fe3O4, and Fe(OH)3) were individually introduced into anaerobic sequencing batch reactors to initiate Feammox processes. After 126 days of enrichment, 48.18 %, 29.38 %, 27.56 %, and 32.18 % of NH4+-N removal efficiencies were achieved, respectively. Notably, t

Dating Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria with Abundant Eukaryotic Fossils.

Evolution of a complete nitrogen (N) cycle relies on the onset of ammonia oxidation, which aerobically converts ammonia to nitrogen oxides. However, accurate estimation of the antiquity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) remains challenging because AOB-specific fossils are absent and bacterial fossils amenable to calibrate molecular clocks are rare. Leveraging the ancient endosymbiosis of mitochondria and plastid, as well as using state-of-the-art Bayesian sequential dating approach, we obtained a timeline of AOB evolution calibrated largely by eukaryotic fossils. We show that the first AOB e

Atmospheric deposition and exceedances of critical loads from 1800-2025 for the conterminous United States.

Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) has increased dramatically over pre-industrial levels, with many potential impacts on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Quantitative thresholds, termed "critical loads" (CLs), have been developed to estimate the deposition rate above which damage is thought to occur. However, there remains no comprehensive comparison of when, where, and over what time periods individual CLs have been exceeded. We addressed this knowledge gap by combining several published data sources for historical and contemporary deposition, and overlaying these on six

Proteomics of Paracoccidioides lutzii: Overview of Changes Triggered by Nitrogen Catabolite Repression.

Members of the Paracoccidioides complex are the causative agents of Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), a human systemic mycosis endemic in Latin America. Upon initial contact with the host, the pathogen needs to uptake micronutrients. Nitrogen is an essential source for biosynthetic pathways. Adaptation to nutritional stress is a key feature of fungi in host tissues. Fungi utilize nitrogen sources through Nitrogen Catabolite Repression (NCR). NCR ensures the scavenging, uptake and catabolism of alternative nitrogen sources, when preferential ones, such as glutamine or ammonium, are unavailable. The

Biogeographic distribution of polyploidy and B chromosomes in the apomictic Boechera holboellii complex.

Glutamine synthetase (GS) is the key enzyme of nitrogen assimilation induced under nitrogen limiting conditions. The carbon skeleton of glutamate and glutamine, 2-oxoglutarate, is supplied from the TCA cycle, but how this metabolic flow is controlled in response to nitrogen availability remains unknown. We show that the expression of the E1o component of 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase, SucA, is repressed under nitrogen limitation in Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli. The repression is exerted at the post-transcriptional level by an Hfq-dependent sRNA GlnZ generated from the 3'UTR of the G

Ammonification Process Is Limited by Transformation of Medium Molecular Weight Nitrogenous Organics but Not Hydrolysis of Proteins.

Ammonification is a critical step in nitrogen cycling framework, but the role of molecular heterogeneity within dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) remains elusive. A controlled laboratory experiment across redox regimes resolved stepwise conversion of DON from proteins to small nitrogenous intermediates. Integrated datasets from macromolecules to monomers from a steady reactor overcame challenging in impossible quantification of all DON compounds in the kinematic research. Data-independent based proteomic analysis revealed that over 85% of proteins remained stable under anaerobic and microaerobi

Nitrogen Application Under Integrated Water-Fertilizer Management Regulates Rhizosphere Nitrogen Dynamics, Microbial Communities, and Maize Productivity.

Nitrogen management strongly regulates rhizosphere nutrient availability, microbial ecological processes, and maize productivity in fertigation-based systems. Yet, the mechanisms by which nitrogen application gradients shape rhizosphere nitrogen transformations and microbial community stability remain insufficiently understood. In this study, a field experiment with four nitrogen levels (N0 0 kg·hm⁻², N1 100 kg·hm⁻², N2 140 kg·hm⁻², and N3 180 kg·hm⁻²) was conducted to clarify how nitrogen inputs influence rhizosphere nitrogen forms, microbial community assembly, and yield performance in maize

Ethylenediamine-Catalyzed Preparation of Nitrogen-Doped Hierarchically Porous Carbon Aerogel under Hypersaline Condition for High-Performance Supercapacitors and Organic Solvent Absorbents.

The simple and cost-efficient preparation of high-performance nitrogen-doped carbon aerogel (N-CA) for supercapacitors and other applications is still a big challenge. In this work, we have presented a facile strategy to synthesize hierarchically porous N-CA, which is based on solvothermal polymerization of phenol and formaldehyde under hypersaline condition with ethylenediamine (EDA) functioning as both a catalyst and a nitrogen precursor. Benefited from the catalytic effect of EDA on the polymerization, the obtained N-CA has a predominant amount of micropores (micropore ratio: 52%) with larg

Irritability, Poor Feeding and Respiratory Alkalosis in Newborns: Think about Metabolic Emergencies. A Brief Summary of Hyperammonemia Management.

The urea cycle is a series of metabolic reactions that convert ammonia into urea in order to eliminate it from the body. Urea cycle disorders are characterized by hyperammonemia, which can cause irreversible damages in central nervous system. We report a series of three newborns presenting irritability, poor feeding and tachypnea. Their first gas analysis revealed respiratory alkalosis. Hyperammonemia was confirmed, and three different enzymatic blocks in the urea cycle were diagnosed. Immediate treatment consisted in the removal of ammonia by reduction of the catabolic state, dietary adjustme

Electrode-Electrolyte Engineering and In Situ Spectroscopy for Urea Electrosynthesis from Carbon Dioxide and Nitrate Co-Reduction.

The biogeochemical cycles of carbon and nitrogen are globally disturbed due to the intensive use of fossil fuels and fertilizers, which is reflected by the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and nitrate in water streams. The co-electroreduction of carbon dioxide and nitrate is a promising low-carbon alternative for urea synthesis that would help to reestablish both carbon and nitrogen cycles. This Perspective highlights the importance of rational catalyst and electrolyte engineering to enable electrochemical urea synthesis. Although the field has gained significant attention over

Nano iron tetroxide-modified rice husk biochar promoted Feammox performance of Klebsiella sp. FC61 and synergistically removed Ni2+ and ciprofloxacin.

The iron reduction coupled with ammonia oxidation process (Feammox) is a biological reaction process associated with the nitrogen cycle that has been discovered in recent years. In this study, the iron-reducing bacterium Klebsiella sp. FC61 was attached by synthesizing nano-loadings of iron tetroxide (nFe3O4) onto rice husk biochar (RBC), and the RBC-nFe3O4 was used as an electron shuttle to participate in the biological iron reduction process of soluble and insoluble Fe3+ to improve the ammonia oxidation efficiency to 81.82%. This acceleration of electron transfer increased the carbon consump

Methylotrophic bacteria in sustainable agriculture.

Excessive use of chemical fertilizers to increase production from available land has resulted in deterioration of soil quality. To prevent further soil deterioration, the use of methylotrophic bacteria that have the ability to colonize different habitats, including soil, sediment, water, and both epiphytes and endophytes as host plants, has been suggested for sustainable agriculture. Methylotrophic bacteria are known to play a significant role in the biogeochemical cycle in soil ecosystems, ultimately fortifying plants and sustaining agriculture. Methylotrophs also improve air quality by using

Forty-three years of partial organic substitution shapes microbial assembly and multifaceted network stability in a paddy soil.

Partial substitution of chemical fertilizers with organic amendments is a promising strategy to sustain soil productivity while reducing chemical inputs. However, the ecological mechanisms by which organic substitution and inorganic reduction reshape soil microbial community assembly, life‑history strategies, and nutrient cycling potential remain poorly understood. A 43-year field experiment with different proportions of organic fertilizer substituting for inorganic nitrogen was conducted. Microbial community structure, assembly processes, keystone taxa, and functional genes involved in nitrog
