Autism, Language Disorder, and Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder: DSM-V and Differential Diagnoses.

• Based on strong research evidence (1), the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) has increased over the past decade, with a 2010 prevalence of 1:68 (1.5%) in children age 8 years. • Based on some research evidence as well as consensus (3), the most recent revision of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V) identifies two core dimensions for the diagnosis of ASD: social (social communication and social interaction) and nonsocial (restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities). • Based on some research evidence as well

Wearable Biosensors in Youth With Autism With High Behavioral Acuity: Supportive Practices, Acceptability, and the Importance of Nonverbal Signs of Assent to Research Participation.

Wearable biosensors can provide insight into the internal states of individuals with autism with communication challenges; however, sensory sensitivities may make wearable biosensors uncomfortable. We describe our approach for introducing a wrist-worn biosensor (Empatica E4) to participants and using supportive techniques. Most participants (76.6%) were able to wear the biosensor for a duration of 15 minutes. The option to wear a colorful sweatband over the biosensor, verbal encouragement, and edible rewards were found to be helpful. Data collection was unsuccessful for the 23.4% of participan

Language recovery after acute intracerebral hematoma in temporoparietal region.

Arteriovenous malformations are the most common cause of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhages in older children. Intracerebral hematoma can cause serious lasting neurologic, cognitive, and language deficits, or even possible death. We present the case of a 16-year-old boy who had language impairments after suffering a large hemorrhagic stroke in the left temporoparietal region. All language components, verbal and nonverbal communication, reading, and writing, were found to be affected. These impairments were expected as they are characteristic of the location of the hematoma. After a year of

Children with developmental language delay at 24 months of age: results of a diagnostic work-up.

The aim of this study was to evaluate if a diagnostic work-up should be recommended for 2-year-old children with developmental language delay (LD), or if the widely chosen 'wait and see' strategy is adequate. Children with LD were identified in paediatric practices during routine developmental check-ups using a German parent-report screening questionnaire (adapted from the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories). A standardized German instrument and the Netherlands version of Bayley Scales of Infant Development (2nd ed.) were used to assess language ability and nonverbal cognitive dev

The assessment of pragmatics in Iranian patients with right brain damage.

BACKGROUND: Pragmatics is appropriate use of language across a variety of social contexts that provides accurate interpretation of intentions. The occurrence of the right hemisphere lesions can interfere with pragmatic abilities, and particularly with the processing of nonliteral speech acts. METHODS: Since the objective of this study was to assess different aspects of pragmatic competence in the right hemisphere damage (RHD) patients, 20 Iranian patients with right hemisphere lesions were examined by adult pragmatic profile (APP) and a novel checklist was introduced for Persian language spea

Chromosomal translocation in a child with SLI and apraxia.

A case study is presented of a 5-year-old boy who was classified as preschool handicapped and was assessed as having a specific expressive language impairment with verbal apraxia. Chromosomal studies revealed a de novo (new) balanced translocation between first and second chromosomes. Results of the neurological, speech/language, cognitive, and play evaluations revealed a child with a severe expressive speech-language deficit but good nonverbal cognitive and communicative skills. The hypothesis of a relationship between a chromosomal translocation and speech/language disorders is explored.

Processes that influence communicative impairments in deaf children using cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVES: We previously presented evidence for the existence of a "disproportionate language impairment" (DLI) in a small sample of children using a cochlear implant (CI) who had a good surgical outcome and who were otherwise unimpaired, including typical nonverbal intelligence quotient. Herein, we studied a larger sample of children with DLI who were CI users and, as before, paired them with closely matched, "Control" children who were CI users but had more typical language skills. The primary aim was to assess the communication skills of siblings of each group of CI users to seek evidence

Autism spectrum disorder traits are associated with empathic abilities in adults with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Social and emotional difficulties have been identified as key factors in the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). However, few studies have investigated the influence of comorbid psychopathology on social cognition. The aim of the current study was to examine perception of nonverbal communication and empathy in AN using ecologically valid, performance-based measures, and to explore associations with comorbid psychopathology (anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) traits, alexithymia, and social anxiety). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the Mul

Outcome in high-functioning adults with autism with and without early language delays: implications for the differentiation between autism and Asperger syndrome.

The question of whether Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism should be considered as the same or different conditions has been a source of debate and controversy over recent years. In the present study, 34 adults with autism who had shown early delays in language were compared with 42 individuals who were reported to have had no such delays, either in their use of words or phrases. All participants were at least 18 years of age, had a nonverbal IQ of 70 or above and met ADI-R criteria for age of onset, communication and social impairments, and stereotyped behaviors. Those in the langu

Reflective Writing to Support Nursing Students' Ethical Understanding of End-of-Life Care: A Phenomenological Study.

End-of-life care requires nurses to integrate ethical sensitivity, emotional presence, and effective communication. Reflective writing, a key component of Narrative Medicine, offers nursing students a structured method to process complex emotional experiences and deepen their ethical understanding. This study investigated how third-year nursing students reflected on ethical issues and emotional responses related to end-of-life care through a structured reflective writing activity conducted after a film-based educational session. A qualitative phenomenological approach was applied to analyze 55

Views of caregivers, clinicians, and epilepsy advocacy group representatives on survey instruments used to assess behavior, communication, and quality of life in individuals with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a rare developmental and epileptic encephalopathy associated with treatment-resistant seizures, profound neurodevelopmental impairments, and high caregiver burden. While seizure control is often prioritized in clinical trials, caregivers emphasize the importance of assessing behavior, communication, and quality of life. This study explored the perspectives of caregivers, clinicians, and advocates on existing instruments for measuring these domains in individuals with LGS. METHODS: We conducted four focus groups with caregivers (n = 22), epilepsy ad

Behavior management of children in the dental office.

One of the first conclusions offered by this article was that behavior management has been a pertinent theme in literature addressing clinical pediatric dentistry. This has been true for much of the twentieth century. Another conclusion stated that this literature generally focuses on the preschool child after the child has acquired sufficient development and maturity that he or she can be communicated to in conversation. It was also pointed out that most general approaches to the subject of behavior management deal with the normal child, which for the purposes of this article can be construed

How Does Alcohol Use Relate to Sexual Consent? A Scoping Review.

People consume alcohol prior to both consensual and nonconsensual sexual activity. To better inform education and prevention efforts targeting the coalescing of alcohol, sexual consent, and sexual violence, we conducted a scoping review of 57 articles published between 1999 and 2024 that examined the relationship between alcohol use and sexual consent. Most articles were qualitative and investigated how alcohol related to perceptions of consent, internal consent feelings, and external consent communication. Each article's findings were coded to assess how alcohol was related to sexual consent

Early Pragmatics in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Infants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A set of important pragmatic skills emerge during infancy and pave the way for later language learning. It is thought these early social communication skills develop through infant-caregiver interaction. In a microanalysis, we tested whether deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) infants (typically at high risk of reduced access to rich communicative interaction in infancy) are less likely to engage in gestural and vocal pragmatic behaviors. METHODS: We coded the naturalistic communication of 8 DHH infants who had no additional needs, who were not preterm or low birth weigh

Monitoring Procedural Pain and Distress in a Child With Rett Syndrome: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Whole body vibration training is a viable option for children with Rett syndrome; however, the positioning requirements and intense vibration may be interpreted as pain. CASE: A 13-year-old girl with a diagnosis of Rett syndrome, Stage IV, participated. The Individualized Numeric Rating Scale was developed in collaboration with the caregiver and scored by a physical therapist and student physical therapists during 16 sessions of whole body vibration training. OUTCOMES: The therapist and students reached 100% agreement on the Individualized Numeric Rating Scale ratings

Impaired non-verbal emotion processing in Pathological Gamblers.

Impaired perception of emotion in others has been described and confirmed in addictions with substances, but no such data exists regarding addictions without substances. As it has been hypothesized that toxic effect of substances on the brain was responsible for the impairments described, studying addictions without substances could be of interest to confirm this hypothesis. Twenty-two male pathological gamblers were compared to 22 male healthy controls matched for age and education level on non-verbal emotion perception tasks including faces, voices, and musical excerpts. Depression and anxie

Thin-slice judgments in the clinical context.

Clinicians make a variety of assessments about their clients, from judging personality traits to making diagnoses, and a variety of methods are available to do so, ranging from observations to structured interviews. A large body of work demonstrates that from a brief glimpse of another's nonverbal behavior, a variety of traits and inner states can be accurately perceived. Additionally, from these "thin slices" of behavior, even future outcomes can be predicted with some accuracy. Certain clinical disorders such as Parkinson's disease and facial paralysis disrupt nonverbal behavior and may impa

The cultural evolution of mind reading.

It is not just a manner of speaking: "Mind reading," or working out what others are thinking and feeling, is markedly similar to print reading. Both of these distinctly human skills recover meaning from signs, depend on dedicated cortical areas, are subject to genetically heritable disorders, show cultural variation around a universal core, and regulate how people behave. But when it comes to development, the evidence is conflicting. Some studies show that, like learning to read print, learning to read minds is a long, hard process that depends on tuition. Others indicate that even very young,

Idiosyncratic gesture use in atypical language development, and its interaction with speech rhythm, word juncture, syntax, pragmatics and discourse: a case study.

Very little is known about the use of gesture by children with developmental language disorders (DLDs). This case study of 'Lucy', a child aged 4;10 with a DLD, expands on what is known and in particular focuses on a type of idiosyncratic "rhythmic gesture" (RG) not previously reported. A fine-grained qualitative analysis was carried out of video recordings of Lucy in conversation with the first author. This revealed that Lucy's RG was closely integrated in complex ways with her use of other gesture types, speech rhythm, word juncture, syntax, pragmatics, discourse, visual processing and proce
