Psoriasis and cardiovascular disease risk factors: the HUNT Study, Norway.

BACKGROUND: Studies have examined the associations between psoriasis and cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors, but the results are conflicting, especially in the general population. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association of psoriasis, and in particular psoriasis severity, with objectively measured cardiovascular disease risk factors and cardiovascular morbidity in a large population-based cross-sectional study. METHODS: We linked data on 50 245 persons in the HUNT3 Study, Norway, with information from the National Prescription Database to obtain information on use of psoriasis

Natural and experimental Helicobacter pullorum infection in Brown Norway rats.

Helicobacter pullorum is an enterohepatic Helicobacter species (EHS) that was recently reported as a naturally acquired infection in mice. Faecal samples from 18 out of 20 Brown Norway (BN) rats, housed in the same barrier as the H. pullorum-infected mice, were positive for H. pullorum using species-specific PCR. In addition, we determined whether H. pullorum was able to persistently colonize the gastrointestinal tract and/or biliary tree and elicit tissue inflammation as well as a serum IgG response in BN rats. Six (four male, two female) 6-week-old, H. pullorum-negative BN rats were orally d

Avoiding disturbance: midwifery practice in home birth settings in Norway.

OBJECTIVE: to explore midwifery practice in home birth settings in Norway, especially practice assumed by the midwives to promote normal labour and birth. DESIGN: in-depth interviews transcribed verbatim and analysed using a grounded theory method. SETTING: home birth settings in Norway. PARTICIPANTS: 12 midwives who regularly attended home births and who had assisted a minimum of 30 home births between 1990 and 2007. FINDINGS: the core category 'avoiding disturbance' was identified during the analyses, indicating that the midwives prevented the woman from being disturbed and protected her

257 ankle arthroplasties performed in Norway between 1994 and 2005.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There have been few reports on the long-term outcome of ankle replacements. The Norwegian Arthroplasty Register has been registering ankle replacements since 1994, but no analysis of these data has been published to date. Here we report data on the use of total ankle replacements and the revision rate in the Norwegian population over a 12-year period. METHODS: We used the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register to find ankle arthroplasties performed between 1994 and 2005. Patient demographics, diagnoses, brands of prosthesis, revisions, and time trends were investigated. RESU

Hearing loss associated with ear infections in Nord-Trøndelag, Norway.

OBJECTIVE: We have assessed the effect of recurrent childhood ear infections on adult hearing. We also examined whether adult hearing is poorer with an early age of onset of ear infections compared with later onset. DESIGN: A population-based cohort of 50,398 subjects, 20 yr of age or older, were examined with air-conduction, pure-tone audiometry and reported if they had had recurrent ear infections (EI) in childhood (or subsequently) with the age of onset. RESULTS: There were poorer hearing thresholds associated with recurrent EI for all frequency ranges from 0.25 kHz to 8 kHz, regardless o

Seasonal eating patterns in Norway: a non-clinical population study.

Seasonal deviations in normal eating habits have been associated with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and bulimia nervosa (BN). Two studies on seasonal variation in eating habits are reported in this paper. In Study 1, seasonal patterns of eating disturbances were measured cross-sectionally in 6313 participants using an eating disturbance scale (EDS-5) and a modified version of the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ). Eating disturbance scores were predicted by seasonal sensitivity scores from the SPAQ, gender, age, and light. Study 2 used a longitudinal design in which 908 part

[Disability pensions in young age in Norway during 1976-1996].

A 15% increase in the incidence of 16 to 24-year olds drawing disability pension was observed in Norway from 1976 to 93. This increase is mainly a consequence of the higher numbers of pensioners because of birth defects and mental retardation. Prevalence of these conditions, which are clearly related to pregnancy, delivery, and inheritable disorders, may have increased as a consequence of the improved survival of newborn babies observed during the last two decades. A 50% increase in the incidence of disability pensions among 16 to 24-year olds has occurred in the three-year period from 1994 to

[Dengue fever imported to Norway. Serologically confirmed cases 1991-96].

With up to 100 million cases annually, dengue fever is today's most important arboviral disease. Dengue fever is endemic in many parts of South-East Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Oceania and the Americas. The disease mainly affects the local population, but occasionally also visitors from non-endemic areas. In this article we present epidemiological and clinical data on all 26 cases with serological confirmed dengue fever diagnosed in Norway in 1991-1996. 21 patients (81%) were infected in Asia. Typical exanthema, leucopenia, and thrombocytopenia were seen in 71%, 79% and 84% of the cases, re

Effects of facial paralysis after acoustic neuroma surgery in Norway.

This survey investigated how individuals with facial paralysis resulting from acoustic neuroma surgery manage self-care needs of daily living. Facial paralysis was defined to include damage from surgery to other cranial nerves located in the same area as the facial nerve. The 40 patients surveyed had surgery performed at the Neurosurgical Department, National Hospital of Norway, Oslo, during a four-year period. The instrument used was a questionnaire based on Orem's universal self-care requisites. Results showed that problems related to eating and drinking and certain physiological problems we

Secular changes in early neonatal mortality in Norway, 1967-1981.

Two five-year cohorts, 1967-1971 and 1977-1981, of the Medical Birth Registry of Norway, were utilized to analyze secular trends in early neonatal mortality rates, controlling simultaneously for birth weight, parity, maternal age, and sex. Improvement in the crude early neonatal mortality rate, from 6.5 to 2.9 per 1,000, was partitioned into one portion (18.4%) attributable to changes in the distribution of the birth weight or the other independent variables and another portion (81.6%) attributable to improved survival within each specific subgroup in the multivariate table. The early neonatal

Chiropractic patient compensation claims in Norway from 2013 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: Compensation claims represent a selective subset of adverse events in healthcare and provide insight into patient safety. Compensation claims vary between countries and jurisdictions due to administrative, legal, and clinical differences. This study aimed to describe compensation claims related to chiropractic consultations in Norway from 2013 to 2024. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective registry study using data from the Norwegian System of Patient Injury Compensation and national chiropractic consultation data. All completed claims associated with chiropractic care between 201

Unraveling female communication through scent marks in the Norway rat.

Chemical communication by females remains poorly understood, with most attention focused on female advertisement of sexual receptivity to males or mother-offspring communication. However, in social species, scents are likely to be important for mediating competition and cooperation between females determining individual reproductive success. Here, we explore chemical signaling by female laboratory rats (Rattus norvegicus) to test i) whether females target their deployment of scent information differentially according to their sexual receptivity and the genetic identity of both female and male

Life satisfaction and mental health among transgender students in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Social attitudes to transgender persons and other gender minorities vary around the world, and in many cultures, prejudices and social stigma are common. Consequently, transgender persons face challenges related to discrimination and negative attitudes among the public. The purpose of this study was to compare life satisfaction, loneliness, mental health, and suicidal behavior among transgender students with cisgender students' experiences in a nationwide sample of Norwegian students pursuing higher education. METHODS: In total,50,054 full-time Norwegian students completed an onli

Examination of work-related diseases among young people in Norway.

BACKGROUND: The hospital departments for occupational medicine and the National Institute of Occupational Health (STAMI) established a shared, anonymous patient register in 2009. This report describes the diagnoses, occupations and exposure factors that occur most frequently in the youngest patient group. This will reflect exposures in modern working life in particular, and thus produce important knowledge with regard to targeted prevention efforts. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We have undertaken a descriptive analysis of 910 examinations of patients in the age group 20-29 years, performed in occupat

But were you drunk? Intoxication during sexual assault in Norway.

Background: Sexual assault often occurs when victims are intoxicated. Rape myth research indicates that intoxicated assaults are sometimes seen as less severe or not as 'real' assaults; however, it is unclear if victims of intoxicated sexual assaults differ from victims of non-intoxicated assaults in terms of health and functioning. Objective: We investigated possible differences in mental health, social support and loneliness between intoxicated and non-intoxicated sexual assault victims. Methods: Participants were 1011 young adults (505 exposed to childhood violence and 506 non-exposed) sele
