An In-depth Study of Abdominal Injuries Sustained by Car Occupants in Frontal Crashes.

Currently, neither abdominal injury risk nor rear seat passenger safety is assessed in European frontal crash testing. The objective of this study was to provide real world in-depth analysis of the factors related to abdominal injury for belted front and rear seat occupants in frontal crashes. Rear occupants were significantly more at risk of AIS 2+ and 3+ abdominal injury, followed by front seat passengers and then drivers. This was still the case even after controlling for occupant age. Increasing age was separately identified as a factor related to increased abdominal injury risk in all sea

Influence of active muscle contribution on the injury response of restrained car occupants.

Optimal performance of adaptive restraint systems requires an accurate assessment of occupant parameters including physical properties and pre-collision behavior of the occupant. Muscle bracing, one of the key reflexive actions adopted by car occupants to mitigate the severity of an impending collision, is ignored in restraint designing since conventional human surrogate tools used for injury assessment due to collision loading provide limited insight into this effect. This study is aimed at evaluating the effect of pre-collision muscle bracing on the injury outcome of an occupant using a simp

Inverted drop testing as a mechanism to evaluate rollover occupant injury potential.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has concluded that there is a relationship between roof intrusion and the risk of injury to belted occupants in rollovers events [1]. Previous testing on many different production vehicle types indicates that damage consistent with field rollover accidents can be achieved through inverted drop testing from small drop heights. It has been shown in previous drop test pairs with Hybrid III dummies, that the amount of roof intrusion is related to occupant neck injury [2,3]. In 1990, a study was reported by General Motors which involved 8 d

Attributes of occupational injury among workers in the chemical industry and safety issues.

Case-study research was carried out with a view to find the attributes of occupational injury among workers in the chemical industry and to enhance safety issues. Injury data were collected and processed in terms of different variables, such as age, gender, skills, type of hazard, etc. Pareto analysis was then applied to find a pattern of occupational injury among the workers. The study revealed that 79.52% of the injured workers were in the 40-59 age group; 57.14% of accidents occurred during the 1st shift; 73.26% of accidents caused injury to hands, feet, chest to thigh, arms and eyes; and 7

Occupational disability after hospitalization for the treatment of an injury of the anterior cruciate ligament.

BACKGROUND: To date, no large population-based studies have focused on permanent occupational disability after injury of the anterior cruciate ligament as far as we know. The purpose of our study was to determine the risk factors for occupational disability after an injury of the anterior cruciate ligament. METHODS: We identified a cohort of 2192 active-duty personnel in the Army who had been hospitalized between 1989 and 1997 because of an injury of the anterior cruciate ligament and had completed a health risk-assessment survey. With use of the Total Army Injury and Health Outcomes Database

High-pressure cornstarch inhalation--a rare but life-threatening occupational injury.

Cornstarch is a white, taste- and odorless powder widely used for food processing, papermaking, production of industrial adhesives, and is also a component of many cosmetic products. We herein report a case of severe cornstarch inhalation in a 49-year-old male who was exposed to high amounts of cornstarch powder while unloading a cornstarch transporter system. To our knowledge this is the first report on a high-pressure cornstarch inhalation during occupational activities. This report demonstrates the initial clinical situation, the patient's symptoms, and the severe clinical course. Finally t

Occupational risky business: injury prevention behaviors of farm women and children.

On farms in the United States, there are approximately 100 fatal and 32,800 nonfatal injuries annually in children 19 years and younger (United States Department of Labor, 1999). Up to 40% of nonfatally injured children are left with permanent disabilities. The impact of injury and death on children associated with farming in the United States is substantial. Research suggests that modeling of health behaviors may be an effective technique for the socialization of children's health behaviors. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, the study describes the participation and use of protecti

A population-based study of outcome after injury to car occupants and to pedestrians.

OBJECTIVE: The literature indicates that trauma center pedestrian mortality rates approximate twice that of injured car occupants. This study was performed to test the hypothesis that outcomes will be similar given similar degrees of injury severity if analyzed from an epidemiologic perspective. Differences are expected in the cause and place of death because of different injury profiles. DESIGN: Prospective population-based study. METHODS: The study group consisted of all adult car occupants and pedestrians sustaining major injury -- Injury Severity Score (ISS) of >15 -- in a defined area o
