Shelf-life extension of sweet basil leaves by edible coating with thyme volatile oil encapsulated chitosan nanoparticles.

Edible coatings have potential to decrease the postharvest losses of several horticultural commodities however; there is no systematic investigation focusing on fresh herbaceous aromatic plants such as basil. Herein, the effects of chitosan (CS), chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) and thyme volatile oil (TVO) loaded CSNPs (TVO-CSNPs) as edible coatings on preserving the quality of sweet basil leaves were investigated. All CS coatings considerably extended the shelf life and decreased the weight loss of basil leaves relative to the control. Using TVO-CSNPs showed 2.4-fold higher shelf life than the

Molecular docking of selected phytocompounds with H1N1 Proteins.

The H1N1 influenza virus is a serious threat to human population. Oseltamivir and Zanamivir are known antiviral drugs for swine flu with observed side effects. These drugs are viral neuraminidase and hemagglutinin inhibitor prevents early virus multiplication by blocking sialic acid cleavage on host cells. Therefore, it is of interest to identify naturally occurring novel compounds to control viral growth. Thus, H1N1 proteins (neuraminidase and hemagglutinin) were screened with phytocompounds isolated from Tulsi plant (Ocimum sanctum L.) using molecular docking tools. This identified Apigenin

Temporal and Size Dependent Uptake of Micro- and Nano Plastics in an Edible Plant.

Micro- and nanoplastic (MNP) uptake in the edible plant basil (Ocimum basilicu) was investigated using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) MNPs with broad size distributions labeled with dibutyl phthalate (DBP), tantalum(V) ethoxide, or rhodamine 640 perchlorate. Basil plants were grown hydroponically in media containing one of the labeled MNPs types. DBP concentrations in roots and shoots were measured by GC-MS as a proxy for MNP uptake. MNP accumulation increased over time with plant growth, with root concentrations exceeding shoot concentrations by more than 2 orders of magnitude. After 8 week

Effect of curcumin loaded in nanoemulsion basil seed gum coating on the reduction of acrylamide and oil absorption in fried potato strips.

Frying is one of the oldest cooking methods, widely used to prepare crispy and flavorful foods. However, a significant concern with fried foods is the high amount of oil absorption. The application of edible coatings is a common approach to reducing oil absorption in fried potatoes. This study examines the effects of basil seed gum (BSG) edible coatings at three concentrations (1 %, 1.5 %, and 2 %), with and without curcumin nanoemulsion, on the characteristics of fried potato strips. Various parameters, including coating efficiency, moisture content, oil absorption, oil oxidation, acrylamide

Quantification of iprodione in dry basil using silica gel supported titanium dioxide.

Iprodione is an agricultural fungicide that is difficult to detect in foods by HPLC because it coelutes with natural compounds in the food. We previously showed that food matrix could be degraded with titanium dioxide powder (TP). Here we describe an improved method for detection of iprodione using silica gel supported titanium dioxide (SGT). To synthesize SGT, titania-sol was mixed with diethanolamine, 2-propanol, and titanium tetraisopropoxide. After titania-sol was infiltrated into the silica gel (particle diameter 4 mm), the mixture was dried and then heated. Crude basil extract containing

Antibacterial and antifungal activities of thymol: A brief review of the literature.

Thymol (2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol) is the main monoterpene phenol occurring in essential oils isolated from plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family (Thymus, Ocimum, Origanum, and Monarda genera), and other plants such as those belonging to the Verbenaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Ranunculaceae, and Apiaceae families. These essential oils are used in the food industry for their flavouring and preservative properties, in commercial mosquito repellent formulations for their natural repellent effect, in aromatherapy, and in traditional medicine for the treatment of headaches, coughs, and diarrhea. Qualitative ethnobotanical survey on the virtues of Carapa procera and plants used for protection against mosquitoes in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Carapa procera products, particularly the vegetable oil, are prized for their cosmetic, medicinal and especially insect repellent/insecticide properties. The latter property raises questions about the use of this plant against mosquitoes that transmit pathogens within Ivorian communities, given that Côte d'Ivoire is endemic for malaria. There is no scientific report on the use of C. procera and the plants traditionally used to prevent mosquito bites in Côte d'Ivoire. The aim of this study is therefore to determine the virtues of C. procera known to the people of Côte d'Ivoire and t

In vitro efficacy of essential oils against various Candida species.

Candida species are responsible for the most common fungal infections worldwide. We studied the in vitro antifungal activity of a large panel of essential oils (EOs) against various Candida species. The EOs activity against Candida spp. was tested using a gradient microdilution assay ranging from 4% to 0.008% (v/v). After a preliminary screening including 31 EOs, seven selected EOs were tested against 13 clinical isolates and four reference strains belonging to six Candida species. Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Cymbopogon giganteus EOs exhibited the best antifungal activity against all clinical an

Suppression of essential oil biosynthesis in sweet basil cotyledons under hypergravity conditions.

The mechanism through which gravity influences the biosynthesis of essential oils in herbs is an important issue for plant and space biology. Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) seedlings were cultivated under centrifugal hypergravity conditions at 100 g in the light, and the growth of cotyledons, development of glandular hairs, and biosynthesis of essential oils were analyzed. The area and fresh weight of the cotyledons increased by similar amounts irrespective of the gravitational conditions. On the abaxial surface of the cotyledons, glandular hairs, where essential oils are synthesized and st

Wound Healing Properties of Plant-Based Hydrogel and Oleogel Formulations in a Rat Scald Burn Model.

Background: Scald burns pose significant morbidity, and effective topical treatments remain a clinical priority. Burn injuries pose a significant clinical challenge due to the prolonged inflammation and high infection risk. Traditional treatments focus on moisture retention and infection prevention, but biocompatible formulations such as hydrogels and oleogels offer advantages. Hydrogels hydrate, cool, and promote epidermal regeneration, while oleogels form a lipid barrier that enhances the absorption of lipophilic bioactive compounds. There is an increasing demand for novel topical alternativ

Unfolding a mystery: a case of small bowel perforation in an edentulous patient.

A small bowel perforation caused by ingestion of plant stems or herbal twigs is rare, with inherent diagnostic challenges (i.e. secondary to radiological translucency and nonspecific manifestations). This is a 50 years-old male, who is edentulous and habitually drinks tea using Ocimum every evening, presented to the emergency department with lower-quadrants abdominal pain for 1 day with no prior history of an animal meat-based meal (e.g. fish, chicken). The labs revealed minimal leucocytosis, and the abdominal computed tomography showed a hyperdense linear foreign body penetrating through the

Potential innovation against Alzheimer's disorder: a tricomponent combination of natural antioxidants (vitamin E, quercetin, and basil oil) and the development of its intranasal delivery.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Alzheimer's disorder (AD) is very difficult to manage and treat. The complexity of the brain, the blood-brain barrier influencing a multitude of parameters/biomarkers, as well as numerous other factors involved often contribute to the decline in the chances of treatment success. Development of the new drug moiety also takes time, being necessary to consider both its toxicity and related issues. As a strategic plan, a combined strategy is being developed and considered to address AD pathology using several approaches. A combination of vitamin E, quercetin, and basil oil in a nano-based formulat

Engineered basil seed hydrogel for eco-conscious adsorption of anionic contaminants in groundwater.

This investigation endeavours to address the presence of arsenic and fluoride ions, common contaminants in groundwater, by utilizing basil seeds (BS) derived from Ocimum basilicum L. as a natural means for water purification. In this research, BS were modified with ferric ions (FBS) and aluminium ions (ABS) to facilitate the adsorptive removal of arsenic and fluoride ions, respectively. Adsorption experiments were conducted through batch adsorption and the teabag dip methods. The modified biosorbents were characterized using a stereomicroscope, FE-SEM, and TGA analyses to ascertain their morph
