PURPOSE: Mutations in the MFRP (membrane-type frizzled-related protein) gene leads to an entity characterized by retinitis pigmentosa, nanophthalmos, optic disk drusen, and macular changes, originally described as foveoschisis. Despite the association of MFRP gene mutation and increase in macular thickness, no treatment modality has been described for cystoid macular edema related to this particular entity so far.
METHODS: In this case report, a 52-year-old woman presented with nanophthalmos, optic disk drusen, retinitis pigmentosa, and increase in macular thickness. Genetic analysis revealed

95 eyes of patients with bilateral exfoliation syndrome (ES) were examined with fluoroangiography. The visual field and the intraocular pressure were tested in the same eyes. The relationship between visual field defects, fluoroangiographic changes of the optic disk and intraocular hypertension is discussed. The results show that when hypertension and defects of perfusion are present in the same eye the visual field defect is always present and it is more severe.

The size of the neuroretinal rim area of the disk was measured with the Optic Nerve Head Analyzer in 57 eyes of 57 patients with low-tension glaucoma (LTG), glaucoma simplex (POAG), and pigmentary glaucoma. The visual fields were examined with Program 33 or 31 (30 degrees eccentricity, 6 degrees grid) of the Octopus 201 Perimeter. The mean sensitivity loss per test point in the central field, in the field quadrants, and in the ranges from 0 degrees-10 degrees, 10 degrees-20 degrees, and 20 degrees-30 degrees were calculated with the Delta program. In addition, the mean loss per disturbed point

There has been a relentless pursuit of transverse electric (TE)-dominant deep ultraviolet (UV) optoelectronic devices for efficient surface emitters to replace the environmentally unfriendly mercury lamps. To date, the use of the ternary AlGaN alloy inevitably has led to transverse magnetic (TM)-dominant emission, an approach that is facing a roadblock. Here, we take an entirely different approach of utilizing a binary GaN compound semiconductor in conjunction with ultrathin quantum disks (QDisks) embedded in AlN nanowires (NWs). The growth of GaN QDisks is realized on a scalable and low-cost

Characteristics of 17 optic disks larger than 4.4 mm2 and thus satisfying the papillometric criteria of macrodisks (larger than normal optic disks plus two-fold standard deviation) were as follows: (1) Form: similar to normal optic nerve heads but even more circular. The vertical diameter was about 6% larger than the horizontal. (2) Optic cup: abnormally large, therefore "pseudoglaucomatous." (3) Neuroretinal rim: normal-sized when correlated to the total optic disk area, larger in the temporal lower than in the temporal upper optic disk region, narrowest on the temporal optic disk side, large

PURPOSE: To describe the presence of optic disk neovascularization in a child with incontinentia pigmenti.
METHODS: A 6-month-old infant with incontinentia pigmenti developed optic disk neovascularization in addition to vascular abnormalities in the peripheral retina. Panretinal photocoagulation was performed.
RESULT: The optic disk neovascularization regressed after panretinal photocoagulation.
CONCLUSIONS: Optic disk neovascularization is another notable retinal manifestation of incontinentia pigmenti. When optic disk neovascularization is detected, retinal ablation should be considered a

BACKGROUND: Pseudo-doubling of the optic nerve head is a spectacular clinical entity, in which a lesion resembling an optic disk appears adjacent to the true optic disk.
CASE REPORT: A case of unilateral pseudo-doubling of the optic disk with bilateral optic nerve pits is presented.
CONCLUSIONS: The lesion is congenital, and represents a chorioretinal coloboma with optic disk involvement. Pseudo-doubling can be differentiated from true doubling of the optic nerve by the imaging techniques of ultrasonography, computerized tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.

Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy leading to changes in the intrapaillary and parapaillary regions of the optic disk. Despite technological advances, clinical identification of optic nerve head characteristics remains the first step in diagnosis. Careful examination of the disk parameters including size, shape, neuroretinal rim shape and pallor; size of the optic cup in relation to the area of the disk; configuration and depth of the optic cup; ratios of cup-to-disk diameter and cup-to-disk area; presence and location of splinter-shaped hemorrhages; occurrence, size, configuration, and location

It is known that changes in pattern electroretinogram (PERG) and optic disk morphology may both precede the onset of visual field damage in glaucomatous disease. However, the relationship between PERG and optic disk morphometry in ocular hypertension (OHT) has not yet been evaluated in detail. This study of PERG amplitude in a group of OHT patients indicates its significant correlation with various optic disk morphometric parameters, in particular, those of optic disk sectors considered at risk for early glaucomatous damage. Analysis of individual data points to the possibility that, while fun

Optic nerve diseases, such as the glaucomas, lead to changes in the intrapapillary and parapapillary region of the optic nerve head. These changes can be described by the following variables: size and shape of the optic disk; size, shape, and pallor of the neuroretinal rim; size of the optic cup in relation to the area of the disk; configuration and depth of the optic cup; ratios of cup-to-disk diameter and cup-to-disk area; position of the exit of the central retinal vessel trunk on the lamina cribrosa surface; presence and location of splinter-shaped hemorrhages; occurrence, size, configurat

Among the great number of idiovariations of papillogenesis, some malformations near the optic disk are of special interest with regard to their formal origin, morphology and differential diagnosis. This matter is discussed on the basis of the author's own observations, which relate to the coloboma spurium of the optic disk, to the ectatic colobomas situated on the disk, the circumscribed pitting of the disk and to Handmann's optic nerve anomaly. With regard to the central retinal changes which occur in coloboma spurium of the disk and in circumscribed pitting of the disk, these are not to be e

There is controversy over the definition, appearance, and characteristics of the optic nerve head in normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). Optic disk size is greater in eyes with NTG than in those with primary open-angle glaucoma. However, in an intraindividual bilateral comparison, the eye with the larger optic disk showed neither more marked nor less pronounced glaucomatous optic nerve damage. Optic disk hemorrhage and peripapillary atrophy have been reported to be more frequent in patients with NTG. Nonuse of calcium channel blockers, peripapillary atrophy, and disk hemorrhage were statistically s

Four members of three consecutive generations of a family had congenital anomalies of the optic disk: deep excavation of the optic disk containing a mass of white glial tissue at its center, anomalous retinal vessels emerging from the peripheral aspect of the disk, and elevated annulus of peripapillary pigmentary disturbance. These optic disk anomalies occurred bilaterally with some inter- and intra-individual variable expressivity. Five of the eight affected eyes had profound visual loss, but three eyes showed normal vision. Two cases developed unilateral nonrhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

The evaluation of the appearance of the optic disk is central to the diagnosis and management of patients with glaucoma. Grouping patients into categories, monitoring change, and quantitating the rate of change all require some type of quantitative staging of the amount of damage. Though the scientific literature regarding the appearance of the optic disk in glaucoma is extensive, there is remarkably little about quantitative staging of the amount of damage. We have identified eight systems, including the cup/disk ratio system of Armaly. Most of the earlier systems suffer from a failure to tak

The rare microscopic picture of a pit of the optic disk is described. The recess extended from the physiological cup of the optic disk to the former cleft of the optic stalk at the point of entry of the ophthalmic artery. There was no disk coloboma. This result is in good agreement with von Szily's paper on the genesis of crater-like holes in the optic disk as a residue of the cavity of the primordial epithelial papilla. In this case there was no communication of the vitreous cavity with a subretinal space, which is suspected of being the cause of the frequent concomitant serous detachment of
