Diagnosis Dilemma of Fibroblastic Osteosarcoma: A Case Report.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a rare form of malignant bone tumor affecting jaws. The diagnosis of jaws osteosarcoma (JO) presents a unique challenge due to its rarity and the diversity of histological presentations it can exhibit. Fibroblastic osteosarcoma (FO), a subtype of OS, is characterized by the presence of fibroblastic cells and osteoid-producing cells within the tumor matrix. In this case report, we present a notable case of FO in a 27-year-old male patient who presented with a progressively enlarging swelling in the mandible. The lesion exhibited a diverse histological spectrum, displaying f

Osteosarcoma After Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Case Report.

CASE: A 79-year-old woman presented with a periprosthetic fracture 8 years after a total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Radiographs demonstrated tibial implant loosening with severe osteolysis. A high-grade osteosarcoma around the prosthesis was diagnosed, and a supracondylar femoral amputation was performed. After 2 years, no complications have occurred. CONCLUSIONS: A malignant tumor around a TKA is extremely rare. Surgeons should remain vigilant with patients who present with rapidly progressive or very aggressive implant loosening with osteolysis. Owing to its complexity and potentially devasta

An Oncoplastic Approach to Primary Pediatric Pterygomaxillary Osteosarcoma.

Osteosarcomas arising within the pterygomaxillary/infratemporal fossa region are rare among the pediatric population. Survival rates are most influenced by tumor resection with negative margins, which can be dependent on surgical accessibility of the tumor site. The pterygomaxillary/infratemporal fossa location poses several challenges to safe and adequate tumor resection, including proximity of the facial nerve and great vessels and scarring associated with traditional transfacial approaches. In this article, we present the case of a 6-year-old boy with an osteosarcoma of the left pterygomaxi

Osteoclasts in Osteosarcoma: Mechanisms, Interactions, and Therapeutic Prospects.

Osteosarcoma is an extremely malignant tumor, and its pathogenesis is complex and remains incompletely understood. Most cases of osteosarcoma are accompanied by symptoms of bone loss or result in pathological fractures due to weakened bones. Enhancing the survival rate of osteosarcoma patients has proven to be a long-standing challenge. Numerous studies mentioned in this paper, including in-vitro, in-vivo, and in-situ studies have consistently indicated a close association between the symptoms of bone loss associated with osteosarcoma and the presence of osteoclasts. As the sole cells capable

Repurposing Ivermectin to augment chemotherapy's efficacy in osteosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma is the most frequent malignant bone malignancy and the current treatments are ineffective. Ivermectin, an anti-protozoal drug, has been shown to have anti-cancer activity. This work investigated the potential of repurposing ivermectin to augment chemotherapy's efficacy in osteosarcoma. METHODS: Proliferation, migration and apoptosis assays were performed in ivermectin-treated osteosarcoma cells. Combination studies were performed. Osteosarcoma xenograft mouse model was established to investigate the in vivo efficacy of ivermectin. Intracellular reactive oxygen species

Primary fibroblastic osteosarcoma of sternum: A case report.

RATIONALE: Osteosarcoma, a malignant bone tumor, rarely occurs in the sternum, especially the fibroblastic type, and is associated with poor survival. This case report describes a patient with a neoplasm of the sternum who underwent tumor resection 3 times and reconstruction twice because of the high risk of recurrence. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 60-year-old Chinese man presented with a 3-cm palpable bulging mass located in front of his sternum. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed an anterior chest wall neoplasm with sternal destruction. DIAGNOSIS: Pathological examination revealed that the mas

Cutaneous diphtheria complicated oncologic reconstruction surgery in osteosarcoma.

Diphtheria is an uncommon bacterial infection of the upper respiratory tract. We described a surgical site infection in a young adolescent female on maintenance chemotherapy. Corynebacterium diphtheriae was recovered from the wound, and she was treated with antibiotics and antitoxin. Cutaneous diphtheria should be considered in immunocompromised patients receiving chemotherapy.

Extracellular Vesicles in Osteosarcoma: Antagonists or Therapeutic Agents?

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a skeletal tumor affecting mainly children and adolescents. The presence of distance metastasis is frequent and it is localized preferentially to the lung, representing the main reason for death among patients. The therapeutic approaches are based on surgery and chemotherapeutics. However, the drug resistance and the side effects associated with the chemotherapy require the identification of new therapeutic approaches. The understanding of the complex biological scenario of the osteosarcoma will open the way for the identification of new targets for its treatment. Recently

Primary orbital extraskeletal osteosarcoma and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a malignant tumour composed of an osteoid and/or cartilaginous matrix; it arises in soft tissues without connection to the skeleton, and to our knowledge, this type of tumour is extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: The present study reports a 57-year-old man with primary orbital extraskeletal osteosarcoma who presented with a history of painful swelling in the left orbit that had occurred for 11 months. Imaging of the orbit showed an atypical, well-defined heterogeneous mass attached to the posterior globe of the left orbit. The patient underwent an ant

miR-505 inhibits proliferation of osteosarcoma via HMGB1.

Osteosarcoma is a malignant bone tumor, and clinically detectable metastases can be detected in ~ 15-20% of patients when they seek medical advice; patients with metastatic disease have extremely poor prognosis. Here, we examined the involvement of the microRNA miR-505 in osteosarcoma. Eighty-four patients seeking treatment for osteosarcoma were included in the study group (SG), and 63 healthy subjects were allocated to the control group (CG). Normal human bone cells MG-63 and U20S cells were transfected with miR-505 mimics, miR-NC, HMGB1 RNA for targeted inhibition (si-HMGB1), and si-NC to ex

Metastatic osteosarcoma presenting as a single pulmonary microembolus.

There are only a few published reports of tumor emboli from osteosarcoma. We are reporting a 17-year-old adolescent boy with a history of localized osteosarcoma who developed a symptomatic pulmonary artery tumor embolus. He was initially diagnosed with a pulmonary thromboembolism. This is the first reported case of a single tumor embolus developing after surgical resection of a tumor with 100% necrosis after chemotherapy and no evidence of metastatic disease at the time of surgery. Pulmonary tumor embolism should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients with cancer who present w

Cathepsin K expression and activity in canine osteosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Cathepsin K (CatK) is a lysosomal protease with collagenolytic activity, and its secretion by osteoclasts is responsible for degrading organic bone matrix. People with pathologic bone resorption have higher circulating CatK concentrations. HYPOTHESIS: Canine osteosarcoma (OS) cells will possess CatK, and its secretion will be cytokine inducible. Circulating CatK concentrations will be increased in dogs with OS, and will be a surrogate marker of bone resorption. ANIMALS: Fifty-one dogs with appendicular OS and 18 age- and weight-matched healthy control dogs. METHODS: In a prospec

[Metastatic extraskeletal osteosarcoma revealed by an occipital mass].

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a rare mesenchymatous tumour occurring in adults aged over 50 years and is located mainly in the limbs or retroperitoneum. We report a case of metastatic extraskeletal osteosarcoma revealed by a cutaneous occipital tumour site. CASE-REPORT: A 53-year-old woman was admitted for dyspnea and weight loss. An occipital tumour, noticed for one year by the patient, was discovered. It was freely movable on the bone, of hard consistency and responsible for alopecia. In addition to left-sided pleural effusion, a chest CAT revealed a large mass in the left lung,

Osteosarcoma with extensive calcified pleural metastases at diagnosis.

We report the case of an 18 year old woman presenting with shortness of breath and pain in the left shoulder. Imaging of the lungs revealed pleural effusion and calcification of the left pleura. An osteosarcoma of the left humerus was the final diagnosis. A review of the literature reveals that calcified pleural metastatic disease in cases of osteosarcoma has been infrequently reported. Other causes of pleural calcification are briefly discussed.

Maxillary osteosarcoma in a prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus).

To date, few tumors have been identified in prairie dogs, with odontoma being the most common. Osteosarcoma has been documented in a wide range of species, including a number of rodents. In this case, a locally invasive maxillary osteosarcoma was diagnosed in a prairie dog. Gross examination revealed a pale, tan, lobulated, sessile maxillary mass extending ventrally into the oral cavity from the hard palate and the gingiva surrounding the upper right cheek teeth. The mass invaded the right nasal cavity and retrobulbar space causing exophthalmia. Microscopically, the mass consisted of densely p

Primary pelvic telangiectatic osteosarcoma metastatic to both orbits.

We report a case of a 23-year-old man with primary pelvic telangiectatic osteosarcoma metastatic to both orbits. The patient had proptosis with optic neuropathies and intermittent third nerve palsies. His disease was unresponsive to chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and extensive craniofacial involvement precluded surgical resection. The patient died of his disease. Telangiectatic osteosarcoma, a rare variant of osteosarcoma that is distinguished by blood-filled cystic spaces, may metastasize to the orbit and skull base. Because telangiectatic osteosarcoma may radiographically resemble other benig
