Physiopathology and Treatment of Obesity and Overweight: A Proposal for a New Anorectic.

The "new epidemic," as WHO calls obesity, is caused by overeating, which, having exceeded the body's actual needs, accumulates in the form of health-damaging fat deposits. Moving more and eating less is the main remedy, but eating belongs to vital instincts, which are beyond the control of reason. In this sense, eating is different from drinking and breathing because without food it is possible to survive for a few weeks, without water for a few days, without oxygen for a few minutes. The first part of this article provides an overview of obesity and its treatment, focusing on the new anorecti

Overweight and obesity in adult patients with phenylketonuria: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Excess weight is a rising concern in patients with phenylketonuria (PKU). It is commonly observed in children and adolescents with PKU; but data on adults are inconsistent. This review aims to summarize available data on excess weight in adult PKU individuals. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of literature in English, from inception to October 2021, on PubMed and Embase to identify articles on overweight and obesity in adult PKU patients. Prevalence of overweight and obesity, body mass index (BMI) and gender differences were the outcomes of interest. RESULTS: Of 260 arti

Typology of eating episodes in children and adolescents with overweight/obesity.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that youth with overweight/obesity can be subtyped according to disinhibited eating tendencies. No research has attempted to subtype classes of eating episodes along sensational, psychological, and hedonic dimensions. METHODS: Youth (N = 39; 55% female) aged 8-14 y with overweight/obesity completed a 2-week ecological momentary assessment protocol in which they reported on all eating episodes and their sensational, environmental, affective, and interpersonal contexts. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to classify episodes based on loss of control (LOC) while

Development of an Assessment Tool for Completion by Patients with Overweight or Obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Discussions of weight-management strategies between patients and healthcare providers can yield positive outcomes for people with overweight or obesity. Nonetheless, people with overweight or obesity encounter communication challenges and other barriers to pursuing effective weight-management strategies with their healthcare providers. The aim of this study was to develop a new self-completed assessment tool to initiate and facilitate conversations related to weight management between patients and healthcare providers. METHODS: Developing the assessment tool involved a series of

Prenatal exposure to glucocorticoids and the prevalence of overweight or obesity in childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal exposure to excess cortisol can affect postnatal metabolic health by epigenetic mechanisms. We aimed to investigate if prenatal exposure to pharmacological glucocorticoids increases the risk of overweight/obesity in childhood. DESIGN: A nationwide population registry-based cohort study. METHODS: We identified 383 877 children born in Denmark (2007-2012), who underwent routine anthropometric evaluation at 5-8 years of age. Prenatal exposure to glucocorticoids was divided into systemic and topical glucocorticoids, cumulative systemic dose, and use by trimester. The comparis

Clinical condition of the oral cavity in overweight and obese patients.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of both obesity and periodontal disease in adults has raised interest among researchers in a correlation between these conditions. Obesity is caused by a poorly balanced diet, rich in sugars, that leads to the accumulation of excessive amounts of plaque, which results in the development of gingivitis, periodontitis and caries. It is known that there is a correlation between these 2 disease entities, but the mechanisms of the interaction have not been explored to date. Thus, attempts to address this research question seem justified. OBJECTIVES: The aim of

Complementary Feeding and Overweight in European Preschoolers: The ToyBox-Study.

Complementary feeding (CF) should start between 4-6 months of age to ensure infants' growth but is also linked to childhood obesity. This study aimed to investigate the association of the timing of CF, breastfeeding and overweight in preschool children. Infant-feeding practices were self-reported in 2012 via a validated questionnaire by >7500 parents from six European countries participating in the ToyBox-study. The proportion of children who received breast milk and CF at 4-6 months was 51.2%. There was a positive association between timing of solid food (SF) introduction and duration of brea

Overweight and obesity in children and adolescents with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: An association between overweight and thyroid dysfunction, including chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (CAT), has been previously described. Patients with overweight and obesity have a higher risk of increased thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and anti-thyroid antibodies. Weight gain may also be a clinical sign of hypothyroidism. This study aimed to describe the frequency of overweight and obesity in children with CAT and to compare thyroid function and antibody titles according to body weight. METHODS: Clinical records from 78 patients with CAT who were followed up at a children's h

The Human Breast Milk Metabolome in Overweight and Obese Mothers.

Pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) is a major relevance factor, since maternal overweight and obesity can impair the pregnancy outcome and represent risk factors for several neonatal, childhood, and adult conditions, including excessive weight gain, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and even behavioral disorders. Currently, breast milk (BM) composition in such category of mothers was not completely defined. In this field, metabolomics represents the ideal technology, able to detect the whole profile of low molecular weight molecules in BM. Limited information is available on human BM

Perceptions of overweight in a Caribbean population: the role of health professionals.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity and its complications is particularly high in the Caribbean. Underestimation of weight status could explain the failure by subjects concerned to adopt behaviours complying with medical recommendations. Little research is available on the role of health professionals in overweight perception. OBJECTIVE: To examine relationships between overweight underestimation and lack of communication on overweight diagnosis by health professionals in a multicultural Caribbean population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study, lead in 2014 on a sample representative of the

The role of overweight and obesity in urinary tract infection in children.

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between overweight/obesity and UTI in children. A comparison was made, in terms of overweight and obesity, between 135 children with UTI (case group) and 135 healthy children (control group). UTI was diagnosed through urine culture. Dimercaptosuccinic acid renal scanning (DMSA) was also used to distinguish between lower UTI and acute pyelonephritis. Overweight and obesity were determined based on standard body mass index (BMI) curves. There were 12 (8.8%) overweight and 26 (19.2%) obese children in the case group. Four (3.0%) overweight an

Laboratory assessment of cardiometabolic risk in overweight and obese children.

Childhood obesity has been identified as one of the most important risk factors of developing cardiovascular diseases. The global prevalence of overweight and obesity among children shows an increasing tendency. Many of overweight or obese children will become obese adults with enhanced risk for cardiovascular diseases. Childhood obesity is often accompanied by serious consequences such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, pro-inflammatory state and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
