Associations between physical activity and functional limitations in Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander middle-aged and older adults in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Physical activity (PA) can help individuals maintain physical function and independence. The association between PA and functional limitations (FL) has not been explored in the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) population. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between PA and FL among NHPI adults (age ≥ 45 years) living in the United States. DESIGN: Cross-sectional data from the 2014 NHPI-National Health Interview Survey (N = 628) was used to create three constructs of FL based on responses from the Functioning and Disability Survey Module: needing equipm

Social mixing in Fiji: Who-eats-with-whom contact patterns and the implications of age and ethnic heterogeneity for disease dynamics in the Pacific Islands.

Empirical data on contact patterns can inform dynamic models of infectious disease transmission. Such information has not been widely reported from Pacific islands, nor strongly multi-ethnic settings, and few attempts have been made to quantify contact patterns relevant for the spread of gastrointestinal infections. As part of enteric fever investigations, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of the general public in Fiji, finding that within the 9,650 mealtime contacts reported by 1,814 participants, there was strong like-with-like mixing by age and ethnicity, with higher contact rates among

Disaggregating data on Asian American and Pacific Islander women to provide new insights on potential exposures to hazardous air pollutants in California.

BACKGROUND: The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) population is heterogeneous and rapidly growing in the United States, with a high proportion concentrated in California. Although traditionally assumed to have lower rates of breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women, recent studies have suggested considerable variation in incidence by AAPI ethnic group, with rates in some exceeding those in non-Hispanic whites. The potential role of environmental toxicants has not been well explored and may provide insights into these patterns. METHODS: We created an exposure potential index (EPI)

SC*994C>T causes the Sc(null) phenotype in Pacific Islanders and successful transfusion of Sc3+ blood to a patient with anti-Sc3.

Antigens in the SC blood group system are expressed by the human erythrocyte membrane-associated protein (ERMAP).Two molecular bases have been reported for the Sc,un phenotype:SC*307del2 and SC*994C>T. We report our investigation of the molecular background of five Sc,n1 individuals from the Pacific Islands and describe the successful transfusion of Sc3+ blood to a patient with anti-Sc3 in her plasma. SC (ERMAP) exons 2,3, and 12 and their flanking intronic regions were analyzed. TheSC*994C>T change introduces a restriction enzyme cleavage site for Tsp45I, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) p

Heritable factors play a major role in determining host responses to Wuchereria bancrofti infection in an isolated South Pacific island population.

BACKGROUND: It is increasingly recognized that host genetic factors may play an important role in determining the outcome of filarial infections. To test this hypothesis in bancroftian lymphatic filariasis, pedigree data were collected twice during an 18-year period from an isolated Polynesian population living on a Pacific island where lymphatic filariasis is endemic. METHODS: Using variance-component analysis, we examined the contribution of shared genetic and environmental effects on host clinical and immune responses to filarial infection, along with potential confounding determinants. An Antiracism Community-Based Participatory Research With Organizations Serving Immigrant and Marginalized Communities, Including Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders in the United States Pacific Northwest: Qualitative Description Study With Key Informants.

BACKGROUND: Asian American (AA) community leaders, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NH/PI) community leaders, and allies in the United States Pacific Northwest expressed concern that there are families and children from AA communities and NH/PI communities who experience and witness acts of xenophobia and racism. This can cause racial trauma. The long-time practice of aggregating AA and NH/PI data contributes to erasure and makes it challenging to advance health equity, such as allocating resources. According to AAPI Data's long-awaited report in June 2022, there are over 24 million AAs and 1

Neighborhood socioeconomic status in relation to mortality rates of gastrointestinal cancers among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander populations in California.

OBJECTIVE: Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers account for approximately 24% of all cancer deaths in the United States (US). Demographic and socioeconomic status (SES) factors have been associated with mortality in GI cancers. However, the associations between GI cancer mortality and neighborhood SES (nSES) among non-Hispanic Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations in California have not been investigated. This study examined GI cancer mortality rates by nSES among AANHPI adults in California. METHODS: The California Cancer Registry, part of the population-based S

Type 2 Diabetes Risk Among Older Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Patients With Head and Neck Cancer in the United States.

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent comorbidities among patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), and its burden is disproportionately higher in Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (ANHPI) populations. However, the incidence and risk factors for diabetes among ANHPI HNC patients remain unknown. The aim of our study was to examine the incidence and risk factors of developing Type 2 diabetes among older (≥ 66 years of age) ANHPI HNC patients in the United States, as well as differences across ANHPI subgroups. Using the SEER-Medicare linked database, we identified Non-Hispanic

Use of Cigarettes, Cannabis, and Alcohol Among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Adults: Community-Based National Survey Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations have diverse cultural, immigration, and sociodemographic characteristics. Aggregated data could mask substantial differences in substance use between cultural subgroups in this population. Yet, studies examining substance use among the AANHPI population are limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe cigarette, cannabis, and alcohol use among AANHPI adults by cultural subgroup and sex. METHODS: We analyzed data from 3411 AANHPI respondents of a multilingual national survey "COMPASS" during December 20

Prevalence and Correlates of Lifetime Ecstasy/MDMA Use Among Asian American and Pacific Islander Adult Populations in the United States, 2015-2020.

Little is known about ecstasy/MDMA use among Asian American and Pacific Islander populations. Research is important because AAPIs face unique cultural factors that may influence use. We estimated the prevalence and correlates of lifetime ecstasy/MDMA use based on a representative sample of US AAPI adults aged ≥18 from the 2015-2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. An estimated 5.1% of AAPI adults used ecstasy in their lifetime. Compared to males, females had higher odds of use (aOR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.08-1.98). Compared to those aged 18-25, those aged 26-34 were at increased odds for use

Investigation of a Salmonella Typhi cluster among a Pacific Islander labour community in a fruit industry: perspective from a regional public health unit.

BACKGROUND: Australia is largely dependent on immigrant workers to bridge the employment gap in the agricultural sector and in agriculture-related food production; this poses a potential risk of the introduction and transmission of non-endemic vaccine preventable disease. We report the response to a Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi) outbreak amongst workers from the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme in regional Queensland. METHODS: A cluster of invasive Salmonella infections was investigated in accordance with the Communicable Diseases Network Australia guidelines. Active case finding

Differential prevalence of psychiatric disorders and mental health characteristics associated with lifetime suicide attempts in the Asian American and Pacific Islander adult population.

BACKGROUND: Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) adults are an understudied group in terms of their mental health and mental healthcare needs. This has been complicated by the difficulty of recruiting adequate national samples of AAPI adults for research. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze national data to examine the lifetime prevalence of major psychiatric disorders among AAPI adults relative to non-AAPI adults, as well as to identify and compare sociodemographic and clinical characteristics associated with lifetime suicide attempts among AAPI and non-AAPI adults. METHODS: Cross-

Unique microbial diversity, community composition, and networks among Pacific Islander endocervical and vaginal microbiomes with and without Chlamydia trachomatis infection in Fiji.

Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) is the most common sexually transmitted bacterium globally. Endocervical and vaginal microbiome interactions are rarely examined within the context of Ct or among vulnerable populations. We evaluated 258 vaginal and 92 paired endocervical samples from Fijian women using metagenomic shotgun sequencing. Over 37% of the microbiomes could not be classified into sub-community state types (subCSTs). We, therefore, developed subCSTs IV-D0, IV-D1, IV-D2, and IV-E-dominated primarily by Gardnerella vaginalis-to improve classification. Among paired microbiomes, the endocervix

Progress towards triple elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis in Pacific Island Countries and Territories: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: The diverse geographic, demographic, and societal factors in the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs) have contributed to unique epidemiological patterns of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B. Transmission can be during pregnancy, at the time of birth or via breastfeeding for HIV, and can have long-term adverse outcomes. Given the similarities in prevention of mother-to-child transmission of these infections, coordinated interventions for triple elimination are used. This systematic review has evaluated the peer-reviewed literature, grey literature, and global databases to
