APHAKIC PHACOEMULSIFICATION AND AUTOMATED ANTERIOR VITRECTOMY, AND POSTRETURN MONITORING OF A REHABILITATED HARBOR SEAL (PHOCA VITULINA RICHARDSI) PUP.

A female harbor seal pup rescued along the coast of San Diego on 13 June 2012 was diagnosed with bilateral mature cataracts, apparently congenital, in association with vitreal herniation in the anterior chamber of each eye. The cataracts were surgically removed on 1 August 2012 with single-port aphakic phacoemulsification and automated anterior vitrectomy. Postoperative monitoring during the next several weeks indicated that vision had been functionally repaired and that she could visually orient to and capture live fish in three different environments and in the presence of other animals. Genetic evidence for the microphallid trematode Maritrema gratiosum in the Northeast Pacific and an overview of its global distribution.

The trematode Maritrema gratiosum Nicoll, 1907 has a heteroxenous life cycle comprising a marine gastropod as its first intermediate host, a barnacle as its second intermediate host, and a bird as its definitive host. Globally, the species is widely distributed from subtropical waters of the South China Sea to arctic waters of the Barents Sea. In European waters (namely, western Europe and the Barents Sea), the complete life cycle of M. gratiosum is known. Elsewhere in its range, however, its life cycle remains incompletely understood. Clarifying its distribution and resolving unknown host ass

Sample size requirements for genetic studies on yellowfin tuna.

In population genetics, the amount of information for an analytical task is governed by the number of individuals sampled and the amount of genetic information measured on each of those individuals. In this work, we assessed the numbers of individual yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and genetic markers required for ocean-basin scale inferences. We assessed this for three distinct data analysis tasks that are often employed: testing for differences between genetic profiles; stock delineation, and; assignment of individuals to stocks. For all analytical tasks, we used real (not simulated) data

Pathological findings in wild harvested dugongs Dugong dugon of central Torres Strait, Australia.

The dugong Dugong dugon is classified as Vulnerable to extinction but may be endangered in some regions. Cause of death in stranded dugongs has not been determined in a large proportion of animals examined, with investigations hindered by limited information on dugong health and diseases, and paucity of knowledge of common or endemic pathological findings. Here we describe pathological findings in harvested dugongs from the relatively pristine area of central Torres Strait, and we characterise lesions attributable to drowning. Other recorded lesions were mild and predominated by host reaction

A new gonad-infecting species of Philometra (Nematoda: Philometridae) from the red cusk-eel Genypterus chilensis (Osteichthyes: Ophidiidae) off Chile.

A new nematode species, Philometra genypteri sp. n. (Philometridae), is described from male and female specimens found in the ovary of red cusk-eel, Genypterus chilensis (Guichenot) (Ophidiidae, Ophidiiformes), from the eastern South Pacific Ocean off the coast of northern Chile. Based on light and scanning electron microscopy examination, the new species differs from most other gonad-infecting Philometra spp. in the length of spicules (126-135 μm), a gubernaculum with dorsal lamella-like structures on its distal end, and the number and arrangement of genital papillae in the male. From a few c

The fine structure of the phoront of Gymnodinioides pacifica, a ciliated protozoan (Ciliophora, Apostomatida) from euphausiids of the Northeastern Pacific.

Phoretic stages of the exuviotrophic apostome Gymnodinioides pacifica were examined using transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM and SEM). TEM revealed that the mature cyst wall possesses 2 or 3 layers differing by the presence or absence of the third inner layer. This inner layer may represent a different form of the middle wall material. The inner cyst layer is approximately 0.15 microm thick and has striations with a periodicity of approximately 19 nm. The middle cyst layer has a variable thickness and the outer dense layer is approximately 0.1 microm thick. The 3 layered cyst w

Estuarine crocodiles ride surface currents to facilitate long-distance travel.

1. The estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is the world's largest living reptile. It predominately inhabits freshwater and estuarine habitats, but widespread geographic distribution throughout oceanic islands of the South-east Pacific suggests that individuals undertake sizeable ocean voyages. 2. Here we show that adult C. porosus adopt behavioural strategies to utilise surface water currents during long-distance travel, enabling them to move quickly and efficiently over considerable distances. 3. We used acoustic telemetry to monitor crocodile movement throughout 63 km of river, and foun

Scrub Typhus: No Longer Restricted to the Tsutsugamushi Triangle.

Scrub typhus is the most important rickettsial disease in the world. Its previous endemic region was considered to be in Asia, Australia and islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans; this area was referred to as the Tsutsugamushi Triangle. Accumulation of serological, molecular, genetic, and culture data have shown that not only is scrub typhus not limited to the Tsutsugamushi Triangle, but can be caused by orientiae other than Orientia tsutsugamushi. This review describes evidence currently available that will be instrumental to researchers, healthcare providers and medical leaders in develop

From signals to species: Improving acoustic classification reliability for North Pacific false killer whales.

This study presents an automated pre-classification data filtering method that increases confidence in the classification of cetacean acoustic events lacking visual verification, while minimizing bias and reducing the need for manual review. The study tests the approach on false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) acoustic data from the North Pacific Ocean. A minimum-data requirement derived from sensitivity analyses, combined with filters based on species-specific acoustic characteristics, defines objective criteria for excluding acoustic events before classification. This framework is a prac

Characterisation of Two Toxic Gambierdiscus spp. (Gonyaulacales, Dinophyceae) from the Great Barrier Reef (Australia): G. lewisii sp. nov. and G. holmesii sp. nov.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is a human illness caused via consumption of seafood contaminated with neurotoxins produced by some species from the epiphytic dinoflagellate genus Gambierdiscus. In this study, we describe two new species of Gambierdiscus isolated from Heron Island in the Southern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia. These new species were analysed using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and phylogenetic analyses of nuclear encoded ribosomal ITS, SSU as well as D1-D3 and D8-D10 of the LSU gene regions. The distribution and accumulation of mercury and methylmercury in surface sediments beneath the East China Sea.

China is a massive mercury emitter, responsible for a quarter of the world's mercury emissions, which transit the atmosphere and accumulate throughout its watercourses. The Changjiang (Yangtze) River is the third largest river in the world, integrating mercury emissions over its 1.8 × 106 km2 catchment and channelling them to the East China Sea where they can be buried. Despite its potential global significance, the importance of the East China Sea as a terminal mercury sink remains poorly known. To address this knowledge gap, total mercury and methylmercury concentrations were determined from

Linking the distribution of (210)Po and (210)Pb with plankton community along Line P, Northeast Subarctic Pacific.

Depth profiles of (210)Po and (210)Pb activity and phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance were collected during two cruises along the Canadian time-series Line P in the Northeast Subarctic Pacific (ranging from 48o39 N to 50o00 N and 126o40 W to 145o00 W) in August 2010 and February 2011 to evaluate connections between the planktonic community and distributions of these radionuclides in the upper 500 m of the water column. Statistical analysis indicates that (210)Po is more effectively removed from the surface ocean when large (>0.1 mg ind(-1) dry wt) zooplankton dominate, and is less effecti

Organophosphate Ester Flame Retardants and Plasticizers in the Global Oceanic Atmosphere.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers and have been detected ubiquitously in the remote atmosphere. Fourteen OPEs were analyzed in 115 aerosol phase samples collected from the tropical and subtropical Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans during the MALASPINA circumnavigation campaign. OPEs were detected in all samples with concentrations ranging from 360 to 4400 pg m-3 for the sum of compounds. No clear concentration trends were found between the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The pattern was generally dominated by tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosph

Species-specific mercury speciation in billfishes and its implications for food safety monitoring and dietary advice.

Humans are exposed to toxic methylmercury mainly by consuming marine fish, in particular top predator species like billfishes or tunas. In seafood risk assessments, mercury is assumed to be mostly present as organic methylmercury in predatory fishes; yet high percentages of inorganic mercury were recently reported in marlins, suggesting markedly different methylmercury metabolism across species. We quantified total mercury and methylmercury concentrations in muscle of four billfish species from the Indian and the Pacific oceans to address this knowledge gap. We found low percentages of methylm

On the causes of geographically heterogeneous parallel evolution in sticklebacks.

The three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) is an important model system for the study of parallel evolution in the wild, having repeatedly colonized and adapted to freshwater from the sea throughout the northern hemisphere. Previous studies identified numerous genomic regions showing consistent genetic differentiation between freshwater and marine ecotypes but these had typically limited geographic sampling and mostly focused on the Eastern Pacific region. We analysed population genomic data from global samples of the three-spined stickleback marine and freshwater ecotypes to detect

Citizen Sailors Provide a Detailed Map of Open-Ocean Surface Biodiversity and Help Link eDNA Data to Satellite Observations.

Characterizing open ocean biodiversity at basin scales remains challenging due to sparse sampling and limited opportunities to validate satellite-derived estimates of plankton community composition. Through the Citizens of the Sea initiative, we deployed standardized environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling kits on 27 sailing vessels during the 2024 Pacific Rally circumnavigating between New Zealand, Tonga, and Fiji, generating 728 surface ocean eDNA samples across 1.5 million km2. Using three complementary metabarcoding markers (bacterial 16S rRNA, eukaryotic 18S rRNA and metazoan Cytochrome Oxidase
