Association between early weaning, non-nutritive sucking habits and occlusal anomalies in 3-year-old Finnish children.

UNLABELLED: OBJECTIVES, DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: Earlier results on the effect of breastfeeding on the one hand, and non-nutritive sucking habits (pacifier and/or digit sucking) on the other, on the orofacial development of infants are inconclusive. Thus we studied the prevalence of malocclusions and their relationship to the duration of breastfeeding and to non-nutritive sucking habits in a group of randomly selected 3-year-old children (n = 148). RESULTS: Posterior crossbite was detected in 13%, anterior open bite in 18% and large overjet (> 3 mm) in 26% of the children. The proportion of child

Elucidation of Factors Affecting Anterior Occlusion in Primary Dentition Based on the Japan Environment and Children's Study.

Background/Objectives: Malocclusion in primary dentition affects permanent dentition. However, the factors contributing to malocclusion in the oral cavities of children have not been fully elucidated. We hypothesized that environmental factors affect malocclusion in the primary dentition of the Japanese population and aimed to identify factors associated with anterior occlusion in primary dentition. Methods: The study involved 3793 parent-child pairs from the Miyagi Regional Centre as part of a supplementary survey to the Japan Environment and Children's Study, a cohort study. A questionnaire

Non-nutritive suck and voice onset time: Examining infant oromotor coordination.

The variability of a child's voice onset time (VOT) decreases during development as they learn to coordinate upper vocal tract and laryngeal articulatory gestures. Yet, little is known about the relationship between VOT and other early motor tasks. The aims of this study were to evaluate the relationship between infant vocalization and another early oromotor task, non-nutritive suck (NNS). Twenty-five full-term infants (11 male, 14 female) completed this study. NNS was measured with a customized pacifier at 3 months to evaluate this early reflex. Measures of mean VOT and variability of VOT (me

Dental malocclusion among children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have more sleep breathing problems and parafunctional oral habits than individuals without ADHD. However, there is scarce information on the correlation between their dental malocclusion and these functional disorders. The objective of this study was to assess the severity of malocclusion in patients with and without ADHD and to evaluate the correlation between their functional disorders and dental malocclusion. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients aged 6-17 years were divided into 2 groups: ADHD (n = 44) and control (n = 4

SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths: expansion of recommendations for a safe infant sleeping environment.

Despite a major decrease in the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) since the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released its recommendation in 1992 that infants be placed for sleep in a nonprone position, this decline has plateaued in recent years. Concurrently, other causes of sudden unexpected infant death occurring during sleep (sleep-related deaths), including suffocation, asphyxia, and entrapment, and ill-defined or unspecified causes of death have increased in incidence, particularly since the AAP published its last statement on SIDS in 2005. It has become increasingly im

Early nutrition, essential fatty acid status and visual acuity of term infants at 7 months of age.

OBJECTIVE: In term infants the relationship between visual acuity and dietary fatty acid composition is not consistent, possibly due to confounders, which were mostly neglected in the studies concerned. In the current study, therefore, the influence of the essential fatty acid status and potential confounders on the visual acuity was investigated. DESIGN: The essential fatty acid status was determined at 7 months of age in red blood cell and plasma phospholipids of breastfed and formula-fed infants, born at term. Visual acuity was measured with Teller Acuity Cards. Information about potential

New Digital Workflow for the Use of a Modified Stimulating Palatal Plate in Infants with Down Syndrome.

Background/Objectives: Down Syndrome (DS) is frequently associated with oral-motor dysmorphologies, like oral hypotonia, tongue protrusion, short palate, and malocclusion, compromising the oral functions of sucking, chewing, swallowing, and speech production. Therapeutic interventions with stimulating palatal plates (SPP) have been proposed to prevent and improve oral-motor dysmorphologies in DS. This study proposes a new digital workflow for the manufacturing and use of a modified SPP. Methods: We report the application of the new workflow to five clinical cases, all infants with DS showing o

A new braided model of the Amulet Amplatzer for accurate simulations of left atrial appendage occlusion procedures.

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is a cardiac disease altering the human heart rate. It is posing an increasing burden to society, with complications that lead to stroke and ischemic events from thromboembolisms, originating in the left atrial appendage (LAA). Percutaneous LAA occlusion (LAAO) is becoming an increasingly adopted preventive treatment option due to its minimally invasive nature. However, this treatment faces complex challenges: the heterogeneity of LAA morphologies limits the pre-operative planning and several procedures are associated with peri-device leakage from malposition and devic

Ayurvedic management for Epidermolysis bullosa - A case report.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is an inherited or auto-immunity-mediated, heterogeneous group of rare genetic dermatoses characterized by fragile skin and mucosae with blister formation induced by minimal trauma. Junctional Epidermolysis Bullosa (JEB) is an autosomal recessive inherited subtype of EB with higher chances of malnutrition and nail involvement. Considering the key factors such as genetic disposition, chronicity, pathology, involvement of deeper tissues, and complexities, EB may be considered as Kustha (spectrum of diseases of the integumentary system) from an Ayurvedic perspective.
