Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) has a high mortality and disability rate. Fewer studies focus on white matter injury (WMI) after ICH, especially the corticospinal tract (CST) injury located in the spinal cord, which correlates with motor impairments. Recent studies have shown that gut microbiota dysbiosis occurs after ICH. Furthermore, NLRP3 inflammasome can be activated after ICH, resulting in inflammatory cascade reactions and aggravating brain injury. However, no direct and causal correlation among NLRP3 inflammasome inhibition, altered gut microbiota, and CST injury following ICH has been r

Gnotobiotic animal research has expanded markedly over the past decade. Although germ-free animals were first described more than 100 y ago, little evidence-based guidance is available on best operational procedures. A key aspect of gnotobiotic technology is the sterilization of animal enclosures, most commonly flexible vinyl film isolators. The objective of this study was to determine the most effective methods for chemical sterilization of gnotobiotic isolators and associated equipment. As test microbes, we used bacteria from 4 different accidental isolator contaminations that occurred in a

INTRODUCTION: American and European foulbrood diseases (AFB and EFB, respectively) result in considerable economic losses for beekeepers. Currently, no satisfactory methods are available for the treatment of either disease. There has been a recent surge of interest in the use of natural substances, such as essential oils (EOs), as a means of combating infections in apiaries. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of a number of EOs against the causative agents of AFB and EFB, namely Paenibacillus larvae and Melissococcus plutonius, respectively, and the

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a greenhouse gas that has a global warming potential approximately 300 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2). It is largely produced in agricultural soils through nitrification and denitrification processes driven by specific microbial functional genes (e.g., amoA, nirS, and nirK), which represent the main source of its emissions. The intensive use of nitrogen fertilizers increases nitrogen surplus in the ecosystem. This in turn accelerates the risk of nitrogen loss through leaching and volatilization, while also accelerating microbial pathways that drive N2O emissions in t

The discovery of glacially preserved remains offers a rare and invaluable opportunity to explore long-term tissue preservation, diagenetic alterations, and microbial colonisation. In this study, we examined a 350-year-old glacier mummy of a purple heron (Ardea purpurea) recovered from the Austrian Alps, specifically from the Gurgler Ferner glacier in Tyrol, Austria, at an altitude of 3.004 m in the area of the Hochwildehaus towards Hochwilde and the Annakegele, marking the first documented instance of an avian glacier mummy in this region. A comprehensive multimodal analytical approach was emp

Phosphorus is one of the most important nutrients required for plant growth and development. However, owing to its low availability in the soil, phosphorus is also one of the most difficult elements for plants to acquire. Phosphorus released into the soil from bedrock quickly becomes unavailable to plants, forming poorly soluble complexes. Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can solubilize unavailable phosphorus-containing compounds into forms in which phosphorus is readily available, thus promoting plant growth. In this study, two willow species, Salix dasyclados cv. Loden and Salix schweri

The search for sustainable energy sources has become more urgent due to the high level of pollution caused by petroleum-based products. Digestate, a byproduct of the digestion of organic waste generated during biomethane production, can be used as a biofertilizer. This compound enriches the soil and promotes the proliferation of nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which benefits sustainable agriculture. This study assessed the biofertilizer potential of digestates from two anaerobic digesters (pilot and laboratory scale) using swine carcasses and effluent. Physicochemical analyses and microbial diversit

Candida auris, an emerging multi-drug resistant fungal pathogen, causes invasive infections in humans. The factors regulating the colonization of C. auris in host niches are not well understood. In this study, we examined the effect of antibiotic-induced gut dysbiosis on C. auris intestinal colonization, dissemination, microbiome composition and the mucosal immune response. Our results indicate that mice treated with cefoperazone alone had a significant increase in C. auris intestinal colonization compared to untreated control groups. A significant increase in the dissemination of C. auris fro

The chemical composition of propolis of four species of stingless bees (SLBs) from Argentina was determined, and its antibacterial and anticancer activity was evaluated on selected types of microbes and cancer cell lines. Volatile secretions of all propolis samples are formed by 174 C2-C15 organic compounds, mainly mono- and sesquiterpenes and their derivatives. The chromatograms of ether extracts showed 287 peaks, of which 210 were identified. The most representative groups in the extracts of various propolis samples were diterpenoids (mainly resin acids), triterpenoids and phenolic compounds

BACKGROUND: Intrinsic capacity (IC) decline is inherently correlated with aging, yet distinguishing specific IC-related biomarkers from general physiological aging markers remains a significant challenge. We aimed to identify multi-omics signatures associated with IC decline after adjustment for relevant covariates and to explore the functional pathways potentially involved in IC decline.
METHODS: We analyzed 110 fecal (metagenomics) and 121 serum (untargeted metabolomics) samples from older adults at Beijing Hospital. Multivariable models were applied adjusting for age, sex, Charlson Comorbi

Rhizobacteria play a crucial role in plant health by providing natural antagonism against soil-borne fungi. The use of rhizobacteria has been viewed as an alternative to the use of chemicals that could be useful for the integrated management of plant diseases and also increase yield in an environmentally friendly manner. However, there is limited understanding of the specific mechanisms by which rhizobacteria inhibit these pathogens and the diversity of rhizobacterial species involved. This study aims to isolate, identify, and characterize rhizobacteria with antagonistic activities against soi

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) with 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase activity has the potential to promote plant growth and development under adverse environmental conditions. In the present study, rhizobacterial strains were isolated from Garlic (Allium sativum) rhizosphere and were screened in vitro ACC deaminase activity in DF salt minimal media supplemented with 3 mM ACC. Out of six isolates, two could degrade ACC into α-ketobutyrate, exhibiting ACC deaminase activity producing more than ∼1500 nmol of α-ketobutyrate mg protein-1 h-1, and assessed for other

UNLABELLED: The identification of enzymes responsible for oxidation of lignin in lignin-degrading bacteria is of interest for biotechnological valorization of lignin to renewable chemical products. The genome sequences of two lignin-degrading bacteria, Ochrobactrum sp., and Paenibacillus sp., contain no B-type DyP peroxidases implicated in lignin degradation in other bacteria, but contain putative multicopper oxidase genes. Multi-copper oxidase CueO from Ochrobactrum sp. was expressed and reconstituted as a recombinant laccase-like enzyme, and kinetically characterized. Ochrobactrum CueO shows

A total of 65 spore-forming mercury-resistant bacteria were isolated from natural environments worldwide in order to understand the acquisition of additional genes by and dissemination of mercury resistance transposons across related Bacilli genera by horizontal gene movement. PCR amplification using a single primer complementary to the inverted repeat sequence of TnMERI1-like transposons showed that 12 of 65 isolates had a transposon-like structure. There were four types of amplified fragments: Tn5084, Tn5085, Tn(d)MER3 (a newly identified deleted transposon-like fragment) and Tn6294 (a newly

S-layers were long regarded as elegant but functionally inert molecular armor. The discovery, three decades ago, that the S-layer of Geobacillus stearothermophilus carries covalently attached glycans overturned this view and inaugurated a new chapter in bacterial cell biology. Since then, the field has expanded in taxonomic scope and mechanistic depth. Complex O-linked glycans have been characterized on bacterial S-layers across Gram-positive Firmicutes, including Paenibacillus alvei, commensal lactobacilli, and the nosocomial pathogen Clostridioides difficile, while the periodontal pathogen T

2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BDO) is recognized for its industrial competitiveness and is predominantly produced in its enantiomerically pure form via microbial fermentation. The economical production of 2,3-BDO relies on the effective use of complex lignocellulosic materials and the advancement of inhibitor-resistant microbial strains. The robust expression of 2,3-BDO dehydrogenase in bacteria enhances volumetric productivity in inhibitor-rich lignocellulose hydrolysate. For instance, isolation of an inhibitor-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae from palm oil effluent facilitated the synthesis of 75 g L⁻¹

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco black shank (TBS), caused by Phytophthora nicotianae, is a devastating disease. Current control relies heavily on chemical pesticides, which pose risks of resistance and environmental pollution. Biological control using rhizosphere microorganisms offers a sustainable alternative. However, the relationship between the composition of the rhizosphere microbiome and its suppressive activity against P. nicotianae has not yet been systematically elucidated.
METHODS: High-throughput sequencing was used to compare the differences in rhizosphere microbiota of healthy and diseased

2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BDO) is a promising platform chemical that can be utilized in a wide range of applications including pharmaceuticals or as a building block for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Presently, 2,3-BDO is produced using petroleum feedstocks, however, it can also be produced by bacterial fermentation of sugars. A major drawback to biobased 2,3-BDO production is the costly separation and recovery process. Due to the high boiling point of 2,3-BDO (177 °C), a traditional distillation process would be energy intensive. This work evaluated the separation and recovery of 2,3-BDO from fe
