Sleep disturbance is a prevalent condition in individuals with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Despite a strong association between the 2 conditions, the potential mechanisms underlying the role of sleep disturbance in CLBP remain unclear. This case-control study aimed to examine pain perception among females with or without nonspecific CLBP and comorbid insomnia. One hundred females were recruited (mean age: 34.3 ± 11.4 years), with 25 individuals with concomitant CLBP and insomnia (CLBP+I), 25 with CLBP (CLBP+), 25 with insomnia (Insomnia+), and 25 healthy controls. All participants completed

Differences in pain responses between adults with or without psychiatric conditions are documented, yet the certainty of evidence on the topic has not been assessed. We examined pain responses to experimentally induced pain in individuals diagnosed with anxiety or depressive disorders compared to controls without mental health conditions. We also explored the influence of pain modality and associations between pain perception and symptoms severity. PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane, and Embase were searched from inception to March 2025. Included studies reported pain measures (pain threshold,

The importance of incorporating lumbo-pelvic stability core and controlling motor exercises in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) reinforces the use of strategies to improve biopsychosocial beliefs by reducing biomedical postulations. However, clinical practice guidelines recommend multimodal approaches incorporating exercise and manual therapy (MT), and instead reject the application of kinesiotape (KT) in isolation. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to analyze the effects of 12 weeks of exercises combined with MT or KT on perceived low back pain using the visual analog sca

The present study investigated the effects of virtual body swapping with mental rehearsal on pain intensity and body perception disturbance (BPD) in patients with complex regional pain syndrome. Patients with complex regional pain syndrome were assigned randomly to three experimental groups: the 'virtual body swapping with mental rehearsal' (VBS) group (n=13), the 'watching movement only' group (n=13), and the 'mental rehearsal only' (n=13) group. Then, pretreatment pain intensity and BPD were compared with post-treatment perceptions. The results showed that pain intensity did not decrease sig

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Recent rise in fraudulent disability claims in the United States has resulted in psychologists being increasingly called upon to use psychological tests to determine whether disability claims based on psychological or somatic/pain complaints are legitimate.
PURPOSE: To examine two brief measures, Modified Somatic Perception Questionnaire (MSPQ) and the Pain Disability Index (PDI), and their ability to screen for malingering in relation to the Bianchini et al. criteria for malingered pain-related disability published in The Spine Journal (2005).
STUDY DESIGN: Examined brie

UNLABELLED: The reports on pain perception among former heroin addicts receiving methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) vary with regard to pain and intolerance threshold, and perception of suprathreshold stimuli has not been previously evaluated. Our aim was to systematically assess perception of threshold and suprathreshold noxious and innocuous stimuli with special attention to the effect of MMT dose and the presence of chronic pain. Noxious and innocuous, thermal and mechanical thresholds and ratings of suprathreshold heat-pain stimuli were measured among 31 MMT subjects receiving high and

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has had a substantial impact on people's lives. Increasing evidence indicates that patients with chronic pain particularly are being affected; however, few articles have examined how the pandemic has affected the care or clinical presentation of patients with orofacial pain. The aim of this study was to describe COVID-19-related changes in referral patterns and numbers, in patient demographics, in patients' seeking treatment for problems, and in administrative procedures in 3 orofacial pain clinical settings.
METHODS: Practitioners participating in the American Academy of

Postpartum pain during intercourse is a prevalent and distressing problem that has substantial consequences for affected couples. Partner perceptions-such as how partners perceive women's pain self-efficacy-contribute to an individual's pain experience. This study examined whether partners under- or over-estimate women's intercourse pain self-efficacy at 3-months postpartum and the implications of this bias for women's pain and couples' sexual functioning at 3- and 6-months postpartum. Women who reported pain during intercourse and their partners (N = 89 couples) completed online measures asse

BACKGROUND: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition which typically affects a body extremity and occurs more frequently from the onset of adolescence. Parents of adolescents with chronic pain report uncertainty and fear concerning their adolescent's transition to adulthood. Nonetheless, little is known about how parents of adolescents with CRPS perceive their adolescent's future.
METHODS: This study sought to explore the future perceptions of parents of adolescents with CRPS (n = 45) and compare their use of language with a sample of parents of adolescents without ch

BACKGROUND: Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) provides improvements in motor and non-motor symptoms in individuals with Parkinson's Disease (PD). These improvements do not necessarily reflect better functioning, emotion, and less pain after DBS. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate individuals with PD perception regarding the effects of DBS in their functioning, emotion, and pain.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study which included individuals with PD who were submitted to DBS surgery. To assess the participants' perception, a questionnaire was developed using the Delphi technique, which was c

Psychiatric conditions can affect the experience of pain. Several reports indicate that Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is associated with an increased pain threshold, while Anxiety Disorders (ADs) may amplify the perception of pain. However, available data on the nociceptive threshold in these psychiatric conditions are controversial. This meta-analysis examines: 1) the nociceptive threshold among people diagnosed with MDD or ADs compared to healthy controls, and 2) the available evidence that pharmacological treatments affect these relationships. Electronic searches were conducted in PubMed

Subcutaneous local anesthetic injection is universally used in dermatologic surgery to achieve anesthesia. While multiple factors have been identified as influential in chronic pain, little is known about factors that contribute to acute pain. The purpose of this article is to elucidate trends and factors that contribute to the perception of acute pain. Patients scheduled to undergo Mohs surgery at our institution were surveyed regarding their anticipated, perceived, and recalled pain from local anesthetic injection prior to ("Before"), during ("During"), immediately after ("After"), and on th

Pain perception is closely tied to the brain's anticipatory processes, particularly involving the suppression of sensorimotor α-oscillations, which reflect the system's readiness for incoming pain. Higher sensorimotor α-oscillation levels are correlated with lower pain sensitivity. Alpha transcranial alternating current stimulation (α-tACS) can enhance these oscillations, potentially reducing pain perception, with effects that may be sustained and influenced by the certainty of pain expectations. Hence, this study investigated the immediate and sustained effects of α-tACS on pain anticipation

Background: Effective pain management is crucial for both comfort and outcomes, yet predicting and managing this pain is difficult. This study aimed to analyze postoperative pain in patients undergoing hand surgery at the Mayo Clinic Florida, examining how patient characteristics and anxiety affect pain outcomes. Methods: We conducted a single-arm clinical trial at Mayo Clinic Florida, recruiting patients undergoing hand surgery. Preoperative pain and anxiety were assessed using the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Postoperatively, patients used an iPh

OBJECTIVE: The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has been increasingly used as a neuromodulatory target in pain management. Transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) was shown to effectively elevate cortical excitability. Hence, this study aimed to characterize how tRNS over the left DLPFC affects pain expectation and perception, as well as the efficacy of conditioned-pain modulation (CPM) that reflects the function of the endogenous pain-inhibitory pathway.
METHODS: Using a randomized, double-blinded, and sham-controlled design, healthy participants were randomly recruited to receive

Background Although intraoperative ocular pain has been investigated extensively in the literature, few studies have evaluated the pain perception between consecutive surgeries. Determining the facts about pain perception during phacoemulsification will allow surgeons to decide the type of anesthesia that best fits the patient when planning the contralateral cataract surgery. The aim of this study was to determine the level of pain perception, factors affecting pain perception, level of patient cooperation, and perception of operation time during consecutive phacoemulsification surgeries.
