Learning and the motivation to eat: forebrain circuitry.

Appetite and eating are not only controlled by energy needs, but also by extrinsic factors that are not directly related to energy balance. Environmental signals that acquire motivational properties through associative learning-learned cues-can override homeostatic signals and stimulate eating in sated states, or inhibit eating in states of hunger. Such influences are important, as environmental factors are believed to contribute to the increased susceptibility to overeating and the rise in obesity in the developed world. Similarly, environmental and social factors contribute to the onset and

Associative Pavlovian conditioning leads to an increase in spinophilin-immunoreactive dendritic spines in the lateral amygdala.

Changes in dendritic spine number and shape are believed to reflect structural plasticity consequent to learning. Previous studies have strongly suggested that the dorsal subnucleus of the lateral amygdala is an important site of physiological plasticity in Pavlovian fear conditioning. In the present study, we examined the effect of auditory fear conditioning on dendritic spine numbers in the dorsal subnucleus of the lateral amygdala using an immunolabelling procedure to visualize the spine-associated protein spinophilin. Associatively conditioned rats that received paired tone and shock prese

Altered developmental trajectories of verbal learning skills in 22q11.2DS: associations with hippocampal development and psychosis.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive profile in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is often characterized by a discrepancy between nonverbal vs. verbal reasoning skills, in favor of the latter skills. This dissociation has also been observed in memory, with verbal learning skills described as a relative strength. Yet the development of these skills is still to be investigated. We thus aimed to explore verbal learning longitudinally. Furthermore, we explored verbal learning and its respective associations with hippocampal alterations and psychosis, which remain largely unknown despite their high preval

Reading-induced shifts of perceptual speech representations in auditory cortex.

Learning to read requires the formation of efficient neural associations between written and spoken language. Whether these associations influence the auditory cortical representation of speech remains unknown. Here we address this question by combining multivariate functional MRI analysis and a newly-developed 'text-based recalibration' paradigm. In this paradigm, the pairing of visual text and ambiguous speech sounds shifts (i.e. recalibrates) the perceptual interpretation of the ambiguous sounds in subsequent auditory-only trials. We show that it is possible to retrieve the text-induced per

Rats with ventral hippocampal damage are impaired at various forms of learning including conditioned inhibition, spatial navigation, and discriminative fear conditioning to similar contexts.

The ventral hippocampus (vHPC) has been implicated in learning and memory functions that seem to differ from its dorsal counterpart. The goal of this series of experiments was to provide further insight into the functional contributions of the vHPC. Our previous work implicated the vHPC in spatial learning, inhibitory learning, and fear conditioning to context. However, the specific role of vHPC on these different forms of learning are not clear. Accordingly, we assessed the effects of neurotoxic lesions of the ventral hippocampus on retention of a conditioned inhibitory association, early ver

EFFECT OF THE CORRECTIONAL APPROACH ON THE REGULATION OF NEURAL FUNCTIONS IN CHILDREN WITH MENTAL DISABILITIES WITH INTERHEMISPHERIC BRAIN ASYMMETRY.

The degree of asymmetry in humans and the complication of mechanisms of interhemispheric interaction are formed mainly in the process of learning, but the impact of developmental teaching methods on the regulation of nervous functions in children with intellectual disability has been little developed. The aim of the work is to study the influence of developmental teaching methods on the regulation of nervous functions in children with mental development disorders and interhemispheric asymmetry of the brain. The information obtained in the data must be taken into account when organizing the lea

Evaluating the effects of single, multiple, and delayed systemic rapamycin injections to contextual fear reconsolidation: Implications for the neurobiology of memory and the treatment of PTSD-like re-experiencing.

The mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) kinase is known to mediate the formation and persistence of aversive memories. Rapamycin, an mTOR inhibitor, administered around the time of reactivation blocks retrieval-induced mTOR activity and de novo protein synthesis in the brains of rodents, while correspondingly diminishing subsequent fear memory. The goal of the current experiments was to further explore rapamycin's effects on fear memory persistence. First, we examined whether mTOR blockade at different time-points after reactivation attenuates subsequent contextual fear memory. We show that

Long-term effects of cerebellar anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the acquisition and extinction of conditioned eyeblink responses.

Cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been reported to enhance the acquisition of conditioned eyeblink responses (CR), a form of associative motor learning. The aim of the present study was to determine possible long-term effects of cerebellar tDCS on the acquisition and extinction of CRs. Delay eyeblink conditioning was performed in 40 young and healthy human participants. On day 1, 100 paired CS (conditioned stimulus)-US (unconditioned stimulus) trials were applied. During the first 50 paired CS-US trials, 20 participants received anodal cerebellar tDCS, and 20 partic

Event-based plausibility immediately influences on-line language comprehension.

In some theories of sentence comprehension, linguistically relevant lexical knowledge, such as selectional restrictions, is privileged in terms of the time-course of its access and influence. We examined whether event knowledge computed by combining multiple concepts can rapidly influence language understanding even in the absence of selectional restriction violations. Specifically, we investigated whether instruments can combine with actions to influence comprehension of ensuing patients of (as in Rayner, Warren, Juhuasz, & Liversedge, 2004; Warren & McConnell, 2007). Neuronal Grin2c expression and the cocaine engram: a medial prefrontal cortex substrate for conditioned place preference.

Learned associations between drugs of abuse and drug-associated stimuli are thought to be encoded by physical alterations, termed engrams, within activity-dependent neuronal ensembles. However, the molecular mechanisms that support drug-memory engrams remain largely unknown. The goal of our study was to assess transcriptional alterations as candidate engrams within medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) ensembles selectively activated by exposure to a cocaine-paired context following cocaine conditioned place preference (CPP). Using the immediate early gene Fos to identify strongly activated neurons,

Word production: dissociation of two retrieval modes of semantic memory across time.

To identify components that contribute to word-fluency performance, 126 patients referred to a Memory Clinic for suspected cognitive impairment underwent a neuropsychological examination including the Controlled Oral Word Association test (FAS; Benton & Hamsher, 1976). The number of words produced in the FAS test during six consecutive 10-s periods followed a negatively accelerated curve approaching an asymptotic level after about 30 s. The 18 FAS variables (3 letters x 6 periods) were entered into an exploratory factor analysis resulting in two factors. One factor, linked to a semiautomatic a

Implicit Statistical Learning of Brazilian Children With Developmental Dyslexia.

Implicit statistical learning (ISL) is non-conscious learning where participants identify patterns in their environment after repeated exposures. This study verified whether Brazilian children with DD present disturbances in the ISL mechanism and if these disturbances may be related to the difficulties associated with DD through artificial grammar learning (AGL) and reaction time in serial tasks (SRT Task). It also intended to verify which of the paradigms proves to be the most sensitive to assess ISL and which is most associated with participants' learning to read and write. Two groups of chi

Remote learning and mental health during the societal lockdown: a study of primary school students and parents in times of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought challenges to families around the world. The prolonged school closures in Hong Kong have forced young students to stay at home and adapt to remote learning for over a year, putting their mental health conditions at risk. Focusing on primary school students and their parents, the main objective of our research is to investigate the socioemotional factors and their associations with mental health conditions. METHODS: A total of 700 Hong Kong primary schoolers (mean age = 8.2) reported their emotional experiences, loneliness, and academic self-concep

Bone lead levels are associated with measures of memory impairment in older adults.

Accumulating evidence suggests a link between lead exposure and memory impairment but assessments based on predictive and validated measures are lacking. We conducted a pilot study of 47 healthy subjects 55-67 years of age to examine associations between bone lead levels and 4 tests sensitive to the natural history of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). These include three subtests of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (delayed match-to-sample, paired associates learning and spatial recognition memory) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test. More learned irrelevance than perseveration errors in rule shifting in healthy subjects.

The present experiments examined the extent to which two possible sources of error affect healthy subjects' performance in a rule-shift task. All 115 participants first received a discrimination learning task, in which a pair of different visual stimuli was presented on each trial, one of which had to be identified as 'correct.' Each stimulus varied in two dimensions: a task-relevant and a task-irrelevant dimension. Feedback on correctness was given after each choice. After eight successive correct choices, the nature of the task-relevant dimension changed: the post-shift learning phase. Two t

Self-awareness and the subconscious effect of personal pronouns on word encoding: a magnetoencephalography (MEG) study.

The effect of personal pronouns such as "ein" (German for "a"), "mein" (German for "my") and "sein" (German for "his") on the processing of associated nouns was investigated using MEG. Three different encoding strategies were provided in order to vary the level of consciousness involved in verbal information processing. A shallow (alphabetic), a deep (semantic) and a very deep (contextual) encoding instruction related to visual word presentation were given to all study participants. After the encoding of pronoun-noun pairs, recognition performances of nouns only were tested. The number of corr

Pairing extinction training with vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) reduces drug-seeking by altering activity in afferents to the medial prefrontal cortex.

Relapse triggered by drug-associated cues or stress remains a major challenge in treating substance use disorders (SUDs), as re-exposure reliably provokes craving and reinstatement of drug seeking. Extinction-based interventions can reduce cue reactivity, yet extinction learning is often weak or context-dependent, limiting its clinical impact. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) enhances learning-related plasticity via widespread engagement of neuromodulatory systems and cortical circuits. Recent preclinical work shows that pairing extinction with VNS facilitates extinction learning and reduces cue-

Improvement in learning associated with increase in hippocampal formation volume.

BACKGROUND: Patients with spontaneous Cushing's syndrome are exposed to elevated levels of endogenous cortisol for months to years. We previously reported that hippocampal formation volume (HFV) increased in such patients after treatment lowered cortisol to normal concentrations. In the present study, we examined whether the structural increase was associated with improvement in cognition. METHODS: Twenty-four patients with Cushing's disease were studied before treatment and following treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to measure HFV and caudate head volume. Prefrontal cortex stimulation normalizes deficient adaptive learning from outcome contingencies in low mood.

Depression and anxiety are associated with deficits in adjusting learning behaviour to changing outcome contingencies. This is likely to drive and maintain symptoms, for instance, by perpetuating negative biases or a sense of uncontrollability. Normalising such deficits in adaptive learning might therefore be a novel treatment target for affective disorders. The aim of this experimental medicine study was to test whether prefrontal cortex transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) could normalise these aberrant learning processes in depressed mood. To test proof-of-concept, we combined tDC

Attention fusion network with self-supervised learning for staging of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) using multiple MR protocols.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is characterized as bone cell death in the hip joint, involving a severe pain in the groin. The staging of ONFH is commonly based on Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography (CT), which are important for establishing effective treatment plans. There have been some attempts to automate ONFH staging using deep learning, but few of them used only MR images. PURPOSE: To propose a deep learning model for MR-only ONFH staging, which can reduce additional cost and radiation exposure from the acquisition of CT images. METHODS: We integra
