Abnormal autonomic nervous system (ANS) function may result in poor outcomes in patients with schizophrenia. Altered cardio-respiratory coupling, which indicates suppression of vagal activity, was identified as an important trait in patients with schizophrenia and their unaffected relatives. Heart rate variability (HRV) in standardized bedside reflex tests has been studied, mostly in medicated patients with schizophrenia whose ANS function could be influenced by medication. Our study aimed to explore the autonomic function differences between drug-naïve patients with schizophrenia and healthy

Bronchial airway microvasculature consists in a developed network of vessels, which plays an important role in normal homeostasis as well as in inflammatory airway processes. Its airway autonomic neural control includes cholinergic and adrenergic innervation, as well as nonadrenergic noncholinergic system. The nerve/vessel interplay is complex and not yet completely clarified. In response to inspired air conditions, the sensory nerves can recruit appropriate reflexes, which can induce different vascular processes, such as vasodilatation, vasoconstriction, plasma extravasation and exudation. After reviewing the nervous control of the lower urinary tract, the author defines the action of various drugs on the bladder, bladder neck, urethra (smooth and striated sphincter). The drugs are classified according to their stimulant or blocking effect on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and alpha and betadrenergic receptors. Drugs acting on smooth and striated muscle fibres are then studied and the iatrogenic adverse effects of these drugs are mentioned.

Neurophysiological mechanisms of the reflex lacrimation were analyzed in anesthetized rabbits. The secretory pattern of the lacrimation elicited by stimulation of the cornea consisted of two phases, that is, a rapid flow phase during stimulation and the subsequent slow flow phase in post-stimulus time. Parasympathetic nerve activities are closely related to the secretory volume in the rapid flow phase of the reflex lacrimation. On the other hand, excitation of the sympathetic nerve depressed the secretion in the rapid flow phase, while it facilitated slightly the secretion in the slow flow pha

The three muscle layers of the opossum stomach were compared in their responses to electrical field stimulation. Strips were cut from the muscular wall of the stomach with their longer axes in the direction of the longitudinal, circular, and oblique muscle layers and stimulated at 1-min intervals with 20-sec trains of 1-msec pulses at 10 Hz and supramaximal strength at 500 ma. Strips either contracted, relaxed, or did not respond during the stimulus trains. Responses were abolished by tetrodotoxin, 10(-6) M. Contractions, but not relaxations, were abolished by atropine, 10(-6) M. Relaxations w

BACKGROUND: Treatment and control of hypertension are important for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The autonomic nervous system plays a major role in the development and progression of hypertension and has become a new research hotspot in cardiovascular disease. Exercise as a non-pharmacologic intervention has likewise received much attention in the field of cardiovascular disease.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of exercise on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems of hypertensive patients. The effects of aerobic, resistance, and combined aerobic and resistance e

During general anesthesia, both behavioral and autonomic changes are caused by the administration of anesthetics such as propofol. Propofol produces unconsciousness by creating highly structured oscillations in brain circuits. The anesthetic also has autonomic effects due to its actions as a vasodilator and myocardial depressant. Understanding how autonomic dynamics change in relation to propofol-induced unconsciousness is an important scientific and clinical question since anesthesiologists often infer changes in level of unconsciousness from changes in autonomic dynamics. Therefore, we prese

BACKGROUND: The heart is the central organ of the circulatory system, which maintains the flow of blood along with the transport of nutrients to different cells and tissues. A well-functioning cardiac state is a complicated mode of changeability. A healthy heart is not only about oscillation, as the rhythmometer is not the same in every circumstance. Heart rate shows variations so that it can be regulated according to psychophysiological conditions to maintain the effect of the internal-external stimulus.
OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this review is to provide a piece of all-inclusive info

BACKGROUND: Although niacin often has beneficial effects on the lipoprotein profile, flushing is an untoward effect associated with its use. Aspirin can only reduce the flushing response by 30-40%. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the mechanisms of niacin-induced flushing, with and without aspirin, in normal, healthy individuals.
METHODS: Niacin-induced flushing was evaluated in 30 healthy individuals after oral administration of 1000 mg niacin alone or with 325 mg aspirin. Neurological, autonomic nervous system, and skin blood flow measurements (using laser Doppler on th

Neural control of the heart is regulated by sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system, both opposing each other to maintain cardiac homeostasis via regulating heart rate, conduction velocity, force of contraction, and coronary blood flow. Sympathetic hyperactivity and diminished parasympathetic activity are the characteristic features of many cardiovascular disease states including hypertension, myocardial ischemia, and arrhythmias that result in heart failure. Restoring parasympathetic activity to the heart has recently been identified as the promising approach

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the utility of quantitative neurological laboratory testing of autonomic nervous system dysfunction and to apply this methodology to further study the relation of chronic vasomotor (nonallergic) rhinitis to the autonomic nervous system.
METHODS: It has been suspected that vasomotor rhinitis is due either to a hyperactive parasympathetic nervous system or an imbalance between it and the sympathetic nervous system. The exact relation has not been determined. Recently neurological laboratories have been developed in which a battery of tests can be performed to determine

We investigated the significance of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and autonomic function in 121 patients diagnosed with panic disorder (PD). The incidence of MVP was higher in these patients (32.2%) than in the healthy controls (16.7%), but the difference was not significant. In the group with PD accompanied by depression, the MVP rate was 58.1%, significantly higher than the value of 25.7% observed in the PD patients without depression. The severity of MVP was mild; nearly all of the cases were silent, without cardiac murmur, and there was no problem with the left ventricular function. The coef

The gut has the capacity to function as an autonomous organ. However, in normal conditions, the gut and the central nervous system talk to each other through the autonomic nervous system (ANS), represented by the sympathetic (i.e. the splanchnic nerves) and the parasympathetic nervous system (i.e. the vagus nerve and the sacral parasympathetic pelvic nerves). The brain is able to integrate inputs coming from the digestive tract inside a central autonomic network organized around the hypothalamus, limbic system and cerebral cortex and in return to modify the ANS and the hypothalamic pituitary a

The heart-brain axis forms an important physiological network, which is increasingly gaining recognition due to its involvement in cardiac function under steady-state conditions and pathological modifications of the heart in cardiovascular disease. Neurological disorders are known to affect cardiac function by propagating structural alterations in the heart. On the other hand, cardiovascular events have detrimental effects on the central nervous system affecting several brain regions, such as the hippocampus, which is important for cognition. Several anatomical regions of the brain, such as co

Parasympathetic stimulation of the lacrimal gland is responsible for tear production, and this innervation originates from fibers conveyed in the facial nerve. After synapse in the pterygopalatine ganglion, postsynaptic parasympathetic fibers travel within the zygomatic and zygomaticotemporal nerves (ZTN) into the orbit. As described in most anatomy texts, ZTN communicates with the lacrimal nerve (LN) posterior to the gland and then secretomotor fibers enter the gland. This study was performed to gain a better understanding of the innervation of the lacrimal gland. Seventeen cadaver heads were

1. The importance of nervous circuits including neural afferences, their integration by the central nervous system and the resulting efferents is illustrated by comparing glucose tolerance following the spontaneous ingestion or the intragastric administration of a glucose load. When these circuits are by-passed (intragastric glucose administration), glucose tolerance is impaired and accompanied by an increased insulin output compared to the situation of normal glucose ingestion. This is due to a decreased glucose utilization in the absence of the numerous reflexes that are elicited by the pres
