APOE ε4 and risk for Alzheimer's disease: do regionally distributed white matter hyperintensities play a role?

BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated that parietal lobe white matter hyperintensities (WMH) increase the risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we examined whether individuals with apolipoprotein E gene (APOE ε4) have increased parietal WMH volume. METHODS: Participants were from the Washington Heights-Inwood Columbia Aging Project (WHICAP; n = 694, 47 with dementia) in northern Manhattan and the Etude Santé Psychologique Prévalence Risques et Traitement study (ESPRIT; n = 539, 8 with dementia) in Montpellier. The association between regional WMH and APOE ε4 was examined separately in eac

Memory deficits.

In this chapter, the neuropsychologic literature concerning memory deficits following parietal lesions is reviewed. Left inferior parietal lobule lesions definitely cause verbal short-term memory impairments, while right parietal lesions disrupt visuospatial short-term memory. Episodic memory, as well as autobiographic memory, does not seem to be impaired after both unilateral and bilateral parietal lesions, in contrast with neuroimaging studies reporting activation of the lateral parietal cortex during memory tasks. The most substantiated hypothesis is that the parietal lobe is involved in th

Hippocampal Connectivity with Retrosplenial Cortex is Linked to Neocortical Tau Accumulation and Memory Function.

The mechanisms underlying accumulation of Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related tau pathology outside of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) in older adults are unknown but crucial to understanding cognitive decline. A growing body of evidence from human and animal studies strongly implicates neural connectivity in the propagation of tau in humans, but the pathways of neocortical tau spread and its consequences for cognitive function are not well understood. Using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and tau PET imaging from a sample of 97 male and female cognitively normal older a

[Selective visual attention and simultanagnosia].

The parietal lobe is an important key station in the network for selective attention. We found that spontaneous shift of visual attention, depending on task requirement, was impaired by parietal lobe lesions and confirmed the relationship between parietal lobes and visual attention with cortical electric stimulation. Patient 1. A 52-year-old, right-handed carpenter with a diagnosis of 'visual form' of Alzheimer disease showed marked kanji (logogram) agraphia and constructional impairment. Cerebral atrophy and hypoperfusion were observed in bilateral parietal lobes. He showed preserved form and

The influence of dynamic response and brain deformation metrics on the occurrence of subdural hematoma in different regions of the brain.

OBJECT: The purpose of this study was to examine how the dynamic response and brain deformation of the head and brain-representing a series of injury reconstructions of which subdural hematoma (SDH) was the outcome-influence the location of the lesion in the lobes of the brain. METHODS: Sixteen cases of falls in which SDH was the outcome were reconstructed using a monorail drop rig and Hybrid III headform. The location of the SDH in 1 of the 4 lobes of the brain (frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital) was confirmed by CT/MR scan examined by a neurosurgeon. RESULTS: The results indicated

Electroencephalogram coherence in children with and without autism spectrum disorders: decreased interhemispheric connectivity in autism.

Electroencephalogram coherence was measured in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and control children at baseline and while watching videos of a familiar and unfamiliar person reading a story. Coherence was measured between the left and right hemispheres of the frontal, parietal, and temporal-parietal lobes (interhemispheric) and between the frontal and parietal lobes in each hemisphere (intrahemispheric). A data-reduction technique was employed to identify the frequency (alpha) that yielded significant differences in video conditions. Children with ASD displayed reduced coherence

Cognitive vision, its disorders and differential diagnosis in adults and children: knowing where and what things are.

As ophthalmologists we need a basic model of how the higher visual system works and its common disorders. This presentation aims to provide an outline of such a model. Our ability to survey a visual scene, locate and recognise an object of interest, move towards it and pick it up, recruits a number of complex cognitive higher visual pathways, all of which are susceptible to damage. The visual map in the mind needs to be co-located with reality and is primarily plotted by the posterior parietal lobes, which interact with the frontal lobes to choose the object of interest. [Kanji-predominant alexia with agraphia in opticospinal multiple sclerosis].

Alexia with agraphia is very rare symptom in multiple sclerosis. We present a patient of opticospinal multiple sclerosis with kanji-predominant alexia with agraphia. A 55-year-old, right-handed man was admitted to our hospital because of difficulty in reading and writing in August 2001. The patient had been diagnosed as having relapsing-remitting opticospinal multiple sclerosis eight years prior to admission. Language examination showed alexia with agraphia predominantly affecting kanji and also mild naming difficulties, but a good comprehension and a normal repetition. T2-weighted MRI demonst

The localizing value of ictal EEG in focal epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the lateralization and localization of ictal EEG in focal epilepsy. METHODS: A total of 486 ictal EEG of 72 patients with focal epilepsy arising from the mesial temporal, neocortical temporal, mesial frontal, dorsolateral frontal, parietal, and occipital regions were analyzed. RESULTS: Surface ictal EEG was adequately localized in 72% of cases, more often in temporal than extratemporal epilepsy. Localized ictal onsets were seen in 57% of seizures and were most common in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), lateral frontal lobe epilepsy (LFLE), and parietal lobe epi

[Characteristics of regional cerebral circulation in parkinsonism patients according the 133Xe clearance findings].

As a rule, in patients with idiopathic parkinsonism the cerebral volume blood flow is decreased in the parietal lobes. Patients with vascular parkinsonism display a decreased blood flow in the frontal and occiptial lobes, more so in the parietal. An inhalation of pure oxygen in the control group of normals decreased the general cerebral blood flow, while in parkinsonic patients it increased it only in the parietal lobes. Treatment with l-dopa regularly and significantly increased the general and regional cerebral blood flow.

Differences in fatty acid composition between cerebral brain lobes in juvenile pigs after fish oil feeding.

Very long-chain n-3 PUFA from fish are suggested to play a role in the development of the brain. Fish oil feeding results in higher proportions of n-3 PUFA in the brains of newborn piglets. However, the effect of fish oil on the fatty acid composition of specific cerebral brain lobes in juvenile pigs is largely uninvestigated. This study examined the effect of a fish oil diet on the fatty acid composition of the frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital brain lobes in juvenile pigs (7 weeks old). Pigs were randomly allocated to a semipurified pig diet containing either 4% (w/w) fish oil (n 19)

Cortical alpha changes during visuospatial attention: a deep learning-enriched EEG analysis.

Covert visuospatial attention in anticipation of a stimulus is known to topographically modulate alpha-band (8 to 14 Hz) brain activity. However, the specific cortical regions involved remain unclear. Here, we conducted a whole-cortex analysis of alpha-band changes by examining source-level electroencephalographic (EEG) signals during a cued visuospatial attention task via a novel approach integrating conventional alpha power analysis with a deep learning technique based on an interpretable convolutional neural network (CNN). Conventional metrics contrasting alpha power between leftward and ri

PECULIARITIES OF THE INFLUENCE OF STREPTOZOTOCIN-INDUCED DIABETIS AND INCOMPLETE ISCHEMIAREPERFUSION OF THE BRAIN DURING APOPTOSIS OF VARIOUS NEOCORTICAL LOBES OF RATS.

The effect of diabetes mellitus on the dynamics of neurocyte and gliacyte apoptosis intensity in the cortex of the frontal, parietal and temporal lobes of the cerebral hemispheres under conditions of ischemic-reperfusion lesion has been studied in experiments on rats. The level of apoptotic processes in the neuro- and gliacytes of the frontal cortex has been found to be unchanged after 20 minutes of carotid ischemia followed by one hour reperfusion according to the indices examined in animals with out diabetes mellitus. Apoptosis of neurocytes is activated in the cortex of the parietal lobe, a

Weber's syndrome secondary to subarachnoid hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Since a large intracranial hemorrhage is a space-occupying mass, it may cause the brain to shift, resulting in neurologic deficits both at the location of the bleeding and at a site distal to the hemorrhage. A parietal lobe hemorrhage may push the brain downward, causing the uncus of the temporal lobe to herniate through the tentorial notch, compressing the midbrain. The signs of parietal lobe damage, uncal herniation, and several midbrain syndromes that effect ocular motility are discussed. CASE REPORT: A 66-year-old Hispanic man came to us with a history of a subarachnoid hemorr

A neglected symptom? Parietal gait lateropulsion as primary manifestation of acute is-chemic stroke.

INTRODUCTION: Gait disorders are commonly overlooked as a presenting manifestation of stroke and underrepresented in case series. We describe four cases of sudden-onset gait lateropulsion as primary manifestation of parietal lobe stroke. CASE REPORT: Four patients presented after sudden-onset gait lateropulsion. On neurological examination, all patients had at least one cortical sensory deficit and wide-based gait with lateropulsion towards the side of the cortical deficit. Neuroimaging revealed a subacute parietal lobe stroke contralateral to the side of gait lateropulsion. In two patients w
