An association between mammographic breast density and fine particulate matter among postmenopausal women.

Increasing breast density is a risk factor for breast cancer. Geographic variations in breast density may be due to differences in lifestyle and diet, as well as environmental factors such as air pollution exposure. However, these environmental contributors have not been established. In this study, we evaluated an association between air pollution and mammographic breast density. The study population for this study was postmenopausal women who had undergone screening mammography at the Center for Preventive Medicine, St. Luke's International Hospital, from April 2004 to September 2018. An explainable integrated optimization methodology for source apportionment of ambient particulate matter components.

Source apportionment of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) components is crucial for air pollution control. Prediction accuracies by the chemical transport model (CTM) significantly affect source apportionment results. Many efforts have been made to improve source apportionment results based on the CTM using mathematical algorithms, but the reasons for uncertainties in source apportionment results are less concerned. Here, an integrated optimization methodology is developed to quantify deviations from emission inventory and chemical mechanism in the model for improving prediction and source appor

Sulforaphane Alleviates Particulate Matter-Induced Oxidative Stress in Human Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness in the elderly, and oxidative damage to retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells plays a major role in the pathogenesis of AMD. Exposure to high levels of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter of <2.5 μm (PM2.5) causes respiratory injury, primarily due to oxidative stress. Recently, a large community-based cohort study in the UK reported a positive correlation between PM2.5 exposure and AMD. Sulforaphane (SFN), a natural isothiocyanate found in cruciferous vegetables, has known antioxidant effects.

Traffic-related particulate matter aggravates ocular allergic inflammation by mediating dendritic cell maturation.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of traffic-related particulate matter (PM) on allergic inflammation of ocular surfaces. BALB/c mice were sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA) and aluminum hydroxide via intraperitoneal injection. Two weeks later, mice were challenged with eye drops containing OVA concomitant with either traffic-related PM2.5 or vehicle eye drops. Topical OVA challenges were administered following unilateral subconjunctival injection of magnetic-bead-sorted CD11c+ dendritic cells (DC). The following were assessed: (1) clinical signs, (2) infiltration of inflammatory

Particulate matter and SARS-CoV-2: A possible model of COVID-19 transmission.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an acute respiratory disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has rapidly developed into a pandemic throughout the world. This disease is a highly infectious novel coronavirus and can affect people of all ages. Previous reports observed that particulate matter (PM) provided a platform for intermixing with viruses (i.e., influenza). However, the role of PM in SARS-CoV-2 transmission remains unclear. In this paper, we propose that PM plays a direct role as a "carrier" of SARS-CoV-2. SARS-CoV-2 is reported to have a h

Seasonal Impacts of Particulate Matter Levels on Bike Sharing in Seoul, South Korea.

Bike sharing is increasingly attracting more riders in cities around the world for its benefits regarding the urban environment and public health. The public bike sharing program of Seoul, South Korea, first launched in October 2015, is now widely spread around the city and serves more than 27,000 riders daily. However, concerns are being raised as rising air pollution levels in Seoul, represented by particulate matter (PM) levels, in recent years may negatively discourage citizens from using bike sharing. This study investigates the impact of PM10 and PM2.5 levels on bike sharing use in Seoul

Maternal exposure to ambient particulate matter and green spaces and fetal renal function.

Exposure to air pollution has been associated with different harmful effects and exposure to greenspace has been related to improved human health. However, the available evidence on the impact of these exposures on renal function is still scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between exposure to ambient levels of PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and indicators of exposure to traffic as well as greenspace during pregnancy and fetal renal function based on the umbilical cord blood. This study was based on 150 pregnant women residing in Sabzevar, Iran (2018). Multiple linear regression

Particulate matter exposure, dietary inflammatory index and preterm birth in Mexico city, Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Particulate matter ≤10 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM10) and diet quality are risk factors for systemic inflammation, which is associated with preterm birth (PTB). PM10 and a pro-inflammatory diet (assessed by the Dietary Inflammatory Index [DII®]) have been individually evaluated as causes of PTB and differences by offspring sex have been reported for the DII. However, additional studies are needed to evaluate joint effects of these associations to inform intervention efforts. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the independent and joint effects of PM10 and energy-adjusted DII (E-DII) on PTB

New application for assessment of dry eye syndrome induced by particulate matter exposure.

Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a multifactorial condition characterized by insufficient tear lubrication and eye irritation. Air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), are an emerging threat to human health causing DES and other diseases. However, the pathogenic mechanisms of DES induced by PM exposure remain to be fully elucidated. Recent studies have attempted to create DES animal model using PM exposure. In this study, we explored a novel in vivo exposure model of DES, utilizing an inhalation device (aerosol exposure system) to reproduce the natural exposure to atmospheric PM. Rats were

Association between coarse particulate matter (PM10-2.5) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma among Taiwanese men.

The nasopharyngeal tract traps mainly coarse particles in inhaled air. Soluble carcinogenic compounds, endotoxins, and trace metals contained in these particles are potential causes of inflammation and oxidative stress which could enhance carcinogenesis. The aim of this study was to determine the association between coarse particulate matter (PM10-2.5) and nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). A total of 521,098 men (355 cases and 520,743 non-cases), aged ≥40 years were included in this study. Data were retrieved from the Taiwan Cancer Registry, the Adult Preventive Medical Services Database, and the A

Gasoline cars produce more carbonaceous particulate matter than modern filter-equipped diesel cars.

Carbonaceous particulate matter (PM), comprising black carbon (BC), primary organic aerosol (POA) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA, from atmospheric aging of precursors), is a highly toxic vehicle exhaust component. Therefore, understanding vehicle pollution requires knowledge of both primary emissions, and how these emissions age in the atmosphere. We provide a systematic examination of carbonaceous PM emissions and parameterisation of SOA formation from modern diesel and gasoline cars at different temperatures (22, -7 °C) during controlled laboratory experiments. Carbonaceous PM emission a

Association Between Environmental Particulate Matter and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The deposition of β2-microglobulin induced by reactive inflammation causing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is one of the complications of dialysis-related amyloidosis in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Air pollution levels, especially particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of <2.5 mm (PM2.5), have significantly been associated with the elevation of systemic inflammatory markers. There is no previous research on possible associations between CTS and PM2.5. METHODS: This study enrolled 866 MHD patients treated at the outpatient HD centers. Senior neurologists di

Exposure to particulate matter induces cardiomyocytes apoptosis after myocardial infarction through NFκB activation.

Clinical evidence has indicated an increased myocardial infarction (MI) morbidity and mortality after exposure to air pollution (particulate matter<2.5 μm, PM2.5). However, the mechanisms by which PM2.5 aggravates MI remain unknown. Present study was to explore the adverse effect of PM2.5 on myocardium after MI and the potential mechanisms. Male mice with MI surgery were treated with PM2.5 by intranasal instillation. Neonatal mice ventricular myocytes (NMVMs) subjected to hypoxia were also incubated with PM2.5 to determine the role of PM2.5 in vitro. Exposure to PM2.5 significantly impaired th

Pulmonary inflammatory effects of source-oriented particulate matter from California's San Joaquin Valley.

The EPA regulates ambient particulate matter (PM) because substantial associations have been established between PM and health impacts. Presently, regulatory compliance involves broad control of PM emission sources based on mass concentration rather than chemical composition, although PM toxicity is likely to vary depending upon PM physicochemical properties. The overall objective of this study was to help inform source-specific PM emission control regulations. For the first time, source-oriented PM was collected from the atmosphere in Fresno, CA, onto 38 source/size substrates. Mice were expo

Exaggerated effects of particulate matter air pollution in genetic type II diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Prior experimental and epidemiologic data support a link between exposure to fine ambient particulate matter (<2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter, PM2.5) and development of insulin resistance/Type II diabetes mellitus. This study was designed to investigate whether inhalational exposure of concentrated PM2.5 in a genetically susceptible animal model would result in abnormalities in energy metabolism and exacerbation of peripheral glycemic control. METHODS: KKay mice, which are susceptible to Type II DM, were assigned to either concentrated ambient PM2.5 or filtered air (FA) for 5-8 we
