BACKGROUND: Pasteurella spp. are important bacterial pathogens in both animals and humans. Most reported Pasteurella infections in humans involve skin and soft tissues, often after an animal bite, scratch, or lick to an open wound. Infections involving bone and joints are well recognized, but have not been previously reported due to Pasteurella canis without a history of penetrating dog bite.
METHODS: We report a case of P. canis osteomyelitis in a 14-month-old girl and a case of P. canis septic arthritis in a 19-month-old girl, both occurring without any preceding penetrating injury. Review

Diabetic foot infection (DFI) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus and a major cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in individuals with diabetes. Superficial DFI can lead to contiguous spread to soft tissue and bone as well as hematogenous spread and sepsis. It frequently involves typical pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or it may be polymicrobial, involving Gram-negative bacilli and anaerobes. Atypical organisms can also be responsible, especially when environmental exposures are present. We report a rare case of Pasteurella multocida osteom

Domestic animals are common in Australian households; however, there is little research into the potential risks these animals pose to patients undergoing in-home peritoneal dialysis (PD). Cats and dogs are known to carry many potential pathogens, including Pasteurella multocida. We reviewed the ANZDATA Peritoneal Dialysis Peritonitis Registry for cases of peritonitis due to Pasteurella multocida between 2011 and 2023. Cases identified were younger and more likely to be female compared with the Australian PD population who developed peritonitis due to other organisms. Of the total 32 episodes,

A 33-day-old previously healthy term female is admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit with fever, lethargy and bulging fontanel. Given concern for meningitis, a lumbar puncture is performed and empiric treatment is initiated. The cerebrospinal fluid culture results reveal Pasteurella multocida. The patient is treated with intravenous ampicillin for 3 weeks and discharged with close outpatient follow-up.

The emergence of simultaneous resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics presents an increasing threat. Plasmid-borne multiresistance and integrative conjugative elements have been reported in Pasteurella multocida. We report an alternative strategy for the development of multiresistance observed in a P. multocida strain (Pm238) isolated from calf pneumonia. We identified genes integrated into the chromosomal DNA without known integrative and conjugative elements. These genes conferred resistance to streptomycin (strA), tetracycline (tetB), chloramphenicol (catAIII), and sulphonamides (sulI

Pasteurella multocida (PM) can invade the upper respiratory tract of the body and cause death and high morbidity. Tildipirosin, a new 16-membered-ring macrolide antimicrobial, has been recommended for the treatment of respiratory diseases. The objective of this research was to improve the dose regimes of tildipirosin to PM for reducing the macrolides resistance development with the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) modeling approach and to establish an alternate cutoff for tildipirosin against PM. A single dose (4 mg/kg body weight) of tildipirosin was administered via intramuscular (i.m

Pasteurella multocida is a common commensal of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts of animals, especially cats and dogs. It is transmitted to humans through contact with animals. Bite wound infection is the most common clinical manifestation. Systemic infections are unusual and mainly affect immunocompromised individuals. The article presents two cases of Pasteurella infection. Wound infection in a 75-year-old female following a bite from her pet cat was associated with bacteremia. The disease course was favorable with the initial clindamycin treatment despite in vitro resistance. The

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a life-threatening complication of liver cirrhosis. Recently, rifaximin, a non-absorbable antibiotic which is used to prevent recurrent hepatic encephalopathy, has been proposed as effective prophylaxis for SBP. Here, we present an unusual case of SBP under treatment with rifaximin. A 50-year-old woman with liver cirrhosis was admitted because of tense ascites and abdominal pain. She was under long-term oral prophylaxis with rifaximin due to hepatic encephalopathy. Paracentesis revealed SBP caused by Pasteurella multocida, which was sensitive to multi

BACKGROUND: In humans, rapidly developing Pasteurella multocida cellulitis after a cat scratch or bite is a well-known entity that sometimes progresses to necrotizing fasciitis and can be fatal.
CASE REPORT: A 3-year-old female spayed whippet dog developed ecchymosis, swelling and pain within 24 h of being scratched by a cat on the ventral thorax. Over the following days, while being treated only with pain medications, the lesions rapidly progressed into haemorrhagic bullae with expanding skin necrosis. A heavy growth of P. multocida was seen on bacterial cultures, and histological examinatio

A 3-year-old boy presented with history of trauma to the left eye after he accidentally injured his eye with a broom stick made up from coconut skewers. There was history of cats as their pets but not dogs. Ocular examination revealed left superonasal conjunctival laceration and scleral perforation with prolapsed vitreous. Fundus examination showed minimal vitreous haemorrhage and flat retina. Conjunctiva swab at the wound site was sent for gram staining, culture, and sensitivity. He underwent scleral suturing, vitreous tap, and intravitreal injection of Ceftazidime and Amikacin. Vitreous tap

Pasteurella multocida causes infectious diseases in a wide range of animal species. Antimicrobial therapy is still an effective tool for treatment. Generally, P. multocida isolates are susceptible to most of the widely used commercial antimicrobial agents but their excessive and unjustified use accelerates the emergence of resistant strains. We defined the antimicrobial sensitivity pattern of 56 P. multocida strains isolated from poultry (20) and swine [16 P. multocida toxin (PMT) positive and 20 PMT negative] to 16 widely applied antibiotics (apramycin, cefquinome, chloramphenicol, colistin,

Pasteurella multocida toxin is a major virulence factor of Pasteurella multocida, which causes pasteurellosis in men and animals and atrophic rhinitis in rabbits and pigs. The approximately 145 kDa protein toxin stimulates various signal transduction pathways by activating heterotrimeric G proteins of the Galpha(q), Galpha(i), and Galpha(12/13) families by using an as yet unknown mechanism. Here, we show that Pasteurella multocida toxin deamidates glutamine-205 of Galpha(i2) to glutamic acid. Therefore, the toxin inhibits the intrinsic GTPase activity of Galpha(i) and causes persistent activat

We summarize an unusual postoperative wound infection that was caused by Pasteurella multocida from a house cat licking the incision in an obese gynecologic oncology patient. A 48-year-old morbidly obese woman had a wound abscess 6 weeks after hysterectomy and panniculectomy for a International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IA grade 1 endometrial cancer. P multocida was cultured from the abscess and the patient was treated with drainage and intravenous antibiotics. Further history revealed that her house cat had licked the wound. P multocida wound infection is a potential compl

Pasteurella canis biotype 1, usually associated with the oral cavity of dogs and cats, or with human wound infections following dog bites, was isolated from newborn puppies with a fatal systemic infection. The identity of P. canis was confirmed by arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction and the organism was susceptible to all the penicillins, cephalosporins, tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones tested and to most of the aminoglycosides tested. This represents the first report of systemic pasteurellosis caused by P. canis in dogs.

Pasteurella multocida is isolated from a variety of disease conditions from different animal species in our diagnostic laboratory. In order to determine serogroup distribution among the isolates, an indirect haemagglutination test using glutaraldehyde-fixed sheep red blood cells was employed. A serological examination of 79 isolates revealed that 47/79 were of capsular serogroup A, 11/79 capsular serogroup D, 4/79 capsular serogroup B and 17/79 were untypable strains. None of the isolates belonged to either serogroup E or F. All those from cases of classical pasteurellosis could be grouped, bu

A laboratory study was performed in order to identify the possible cause of death in chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus) imported from China with respiratory disease. Severe congestion, alveolar oedema and fibrinous pleuritis were observed. Biochemical analyses identified the causative organism as Pasteurella haemolytica. An in vitro susceptibility test using various antimicrobial agents revealed sensitivity to beta-lactams (ampicillin and amoxicillin) and streptomycin.
