Addressing patient variability: clinical challenges in the initiation of acne treatment.

Aligning an acne diagnosis with a therapeutic strategy is the cornerstone of acne management. The challenges associated with treatment selection include the type and severity of the patient's acne as well as the mechanism of action of each medication and its ability to address one or more of the pathogenic factors of acne. Beyond the efficacy of treatment, the clinician must be able to address a number of factors that also will influence treatment success, the most important being compliance. The characteristics of treatment (e.g., tolerability profiles, dosing, vehicle) have a profound effect

Impact of interdisciplinary education on pharmacy student knowledge and comfort with counseling on drug-nutrient interactions.

INTRODUCTION: Drug-nutrient interactions (DNIs) can negatively impact the medication use process and cause patient harm. Education in basic nutrition is often not included within pharmacy school curricula despite pharmacists needing to be proficient in identifying sources of potentially interacting nutrients. We evaluated the impact of an online education module about common DNIs and their sources on fourth-year student pharmacist knowledge, comfort with counseling, and perceived importance of DNIs. METHODS: Fourth-year pharmacy students participating in their first community pharmacy advance

High Burden and Trend in Nonadherence to Blood Pressure-Lowering Medications: Meta-Analysis of Data From Over 34 000 Adults With Hypertension in Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Nonadherence to blood pressure (BP)-lowering medication is a strong predictor of poor BP control. Sub-Saharan Africa has extremely low BP control rates (~10%), but it is unclear what the burden of medication nonadherence among Africans with hypertension is. This systematic review estimated the prevalence and determinants of nonadherence to BP-lowering medications in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS AND RESULTS: Multiple databases were searched from inception to December 6, 2023. Two reviewers performed independent screening, extraction, and quality assessment of studies. We pooled the

Transition of Care from Pediatric to Adult Care in Eosinophilic Esophagitis: Insights From a Patient Perspective Survey.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic immune-mediated disease. Patients with a childhood diagnosis require ongoing disease management in adulthood; however, knowledge of the patient experience during pediatric to adult healthcare transition is lacking. Here, an online survey captured patient perceptions of the challenges faced by patients with EoE in the United States during transition to adult healthcare, and which resources, if implemented, could better support transition. Of 67 respondents, 91% (n = 61) were under adult care at the time of survey completion. Aspects that respondents s

Self-care habits and disease-state understanding of diabetic patients.

Diabetic patients who had never participated in a formal diabetes education program were surveyed to assess their self-care patterns and knowledge of diabetes. A sample of 142 men was selected from the diabetes clinic of a VA hospital. Patients were interviewed, a questionnaire was given to the insulin-dependent patients, and medical records were reviewed to determine concurrent use of antidiabetic medications and other drugs. The majority of patients (91%) were aware of the effects of alcohol, glucose rich foods, and lack of medication on diabetic control. However, 42% of the patients were aw

The effect of an interprofessional pain service on nonmalignant pain control.

PURPOSE: The primary objective of this project was to evaluate an existing interprofessional, nonmalignant pain service by measuring the difference in patient pain scores (numeric rating scale-11) before and after a pharmacist-led pain education class and medication therapy management (MTM) visit. Secondary objectives included determining the percentage of pharmacist recommendations approved, patient satisfaction, and difference in immediate release (IR) and extended release (ER) opioid use before and after enrollment. METHODS: Baseline data were obtained from a retrospective chart review. En

[Cognitive and behaviorally relevant aspects of compliance with prescribed drugs by geriatric patients].

Studies of compliance with drug treatment in the elderly have mainly focused on treatment variables, and patient knowledge or comprehension. However, information on behavioral aspects is sparse. Therefore, interviews concerning medication were performed in 31 geriatric patients, mean age 79.6 years. The aim was to evaluate whether there were relations between coping with health problems and attitudes towards/taking of medication prescribed. It was concluded from the analysis of these tape-recorded interviews that different forms of coping strategies were reflected by patients' attitudes toward

[Compliance and knowledge about prescribed medication among elderly home-care recipients by method of providing medications].

After long-term care insurance commenced in April 2000, various types of in-home care began, including delivery of prescriptions medicines to the elderly. However, the effects of in-home care workers on patient drug compliance are unclear as yet. In this study, we examined the characteristics of the care workers who delivered prescription medicines to the elderly, and analyzed the effects on patient drug compliance and knowledge about medication. The subjects included 163 homecare recipients aged 60 and older, who were taking more than one prescribed drug, who ranked worse than J-2 who were ph

Key factors underlying the willingness of patients with cancer to participate in medication redispensing.

BACKGROUND: Redispensing medication unused by patients to other patients could reduce the environmental burden of medication waste. Simultaneously, associated financial loss could be reduced, particularly for expensive medication such as oral anticancer drugs. An important determinant for successful medication redispensing is patient participation. OBJECTIVE(S): To identify key factors underlying the willingness of patients with cancer to participate in the redispensing of unused oral anticancer drugs. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews via telephone or video call were conducted with adult

Improving patient information leaflets: developing and applying an evaluative model of patient-centredness for text.

The purpose of this paper is to present an evaluative model of patient-centredness for text and to illustrate how this can be applied to patient information leaflets (PILs) that accompany medication in the European Union. Patients have criticized PILs for sidelining their experiences, knowledge and affective needs, and denying their individuality. The health communication paradigm of patient-centredness provides valuable purchase on these issues, taking its starting point in the dignity and integrity of the patient as a person. Employing this evaluative model involves two stages. First, a Fouc

Discontinuation of psychotropic medication: a synthesis of evidence across medication classes.

Pharmacotherapy is an effective treatment modality across psychiatric disorders. Nevertheless, many patients discontinue their medication at some point. Evidence-based guidance for patients, clinicians, and policymakers on rational discontinuation strategies is vital to enable the best, personalized treatment for any given patient. Nonetheless, there is a scarcity of guidelines on discontinuation strategies. In this perspective, we therefore summarize and critically appraise the evidence on discontinuation of six major psychotropic medication classes: antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzodiaz

Impact of the Cardio-Meds Mobile App on Heart Failure Knowledge and Medication Adherence: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is a prevalent chronic condition for which optimal management depends not only on guideline-directed medical therapy but also on patients' understanding of their disease, recognition of warning signs, and sustained medication adherence, which remains challenging in routine care. Mobile health interventions may support therapeutic education and self-management; however, many available apps lack validated content and local relevance. Cardio-Meds is a mobile app developed at Geneva University Hospitals to support HF self-management through structured educational con

Perceived risk, symptoms and help-seeking behaviour for obstructive sleep apnoea among undergraduate medical students: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a well-known type of sleep disorder that is commonly underdiagnosed. Undergraduate medical students are said to be a paradoxical group because despite their theoretical knowledge about symptoms of OSA, they often omit their own symptoms of OSA. This may lead to delayed recognition of symptoms and identification of OSA. Sparse evidence exists regarding how they recognize their own OSA symptoms, interpret their risk and address their condition. The current study aims to explore the self-perceived risk of OSA, awareness of symptoms and help-seeking ac
