Safety and patient experiences with the natalizumab biosimilar in multiple sclerosis treatment.

INTRODUCTION: In 2023, the natalizumab biosimilar Tyruko® was approved for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. Here, we assessed patient experiences and natalizumab serum concentrations in a real-world cohort of patients who switched from the originator, Tysabri®, to the biosimilar. Furthermore, we evaluated the consistency of the new John Cunningham virus (JCV) assay that comes with the biosimilar. METHODS: Patients, aware of the switch, completed questionnaires and had natalizumab concentrations measured during treatment with both products. Questionnaires assessed impact of MS symptoms,

Adverse event reporting and patient safety: the role of a just culture.

Reporting adverse events is essential for ensuring patient safety and fostering a culture of continuous improvement in healthcare. Adverse events, defined as unintended injuries or complications arising from healthcare management, offer crucial insights into systemic weaknesses that, if addressed, can prevent future harm. However, underreporting such events remains a significant challenge, often driven by fear of punitive actions, reputational damage or legal repercussions. To address these concerns and promote a robust reporting culture, healthcare organisations must adopt a just culture by i

Frequency and Factors Associated with Patient Safety Events During Prehospital Obstetric Emergencies.

OBJECTIVES: Patient safety events (PSE) in the prehospital setting are common for high acuity and pediatric patients; however, little is known about PSE during prehospital obstetric emergencies. Our objective was to examine the frequency and factors associated with PSEs during out-of-hospital delivery and postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) treated by emergency medical services (EMS) clinicians in the United States. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional evaluation of advanced life support EMS 9-1-1 activations for patients aged 12-50 years with out-of-hospital delivery or PPH in the 2018-2019 Natio

Development of Patient Safety Measures to Identify Inappropriate Diagnosis of Common Infections.

BACKGROUND: Inappropriate diagnosis of infections results in antibiotic overuse and may delay diagnosis of underlying conditions. Here we describe the development and characteristics of 2 safety measures of inappropriate diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI) and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), the most common inpatient infections on general medicine services. METHODS: Measures were developed from guidelines and literature and adapted based on data from patients hospitalized with UTI and CAP in 49 Michigan hospitals and feedback from end-users, a technical expert panel (TEP), and a pa

Analysis of patient safety event report categories at one large academic hospital.

Given the persistent safety incidents in operating rooms (ORs) nationwide (approx. 4,000 preventable harmful surgical errors per year), there is a need to better analyze and understand reported patient safety events. This study describes the results of applying the Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) supported by the Teamwork Evaluation of Non-Technical Skills (TENTS) instrument to analyze patient safety event reports at one large academic medical center. Results suggest that suboptimal behaviors stemming from poor communication, lack of situation m

Depth of anesthesia monitoring: an argument for its use for patient safety.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There have been significant advancements in depth of anesthesia (DoA) technology. The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation recently published recommendations to use a DoA monitor in specific patient populations receiving general anesthesia. However, the universal use of DoA monitoring is not yet accepted. This review explores the current state of DoA monitors and their potential impact on patient safety. RECENT FINDINGS: We reviewed the current evidence for using a DoA monitor and its potential role in preventing awareness and preserving brain health by decreasing the incid

Patient Safety during Propofol Sedation before and after Implementation of Capnography Monitoring.

Endoscopic procedures are routinely applied to cancer screening programs and surveillance. The preferred technique is usually deep sedation with propofol being a convenient agent allowing for a quicker patient recovery while maintaining a similar safety profile compared to traditional agents. However, adverse events, including respiratory depression and consequent undesirable cardiovascular side effects, may occur. The goal of this work is to evaluate the patient safety impact of adding capnography during endoscopic procedures under deep propofol sedation. Data were retrospectively collected f

Adult Cranioplasty and Perioperative Patient Safety: Does Plastic Surgery Facility Volume Matter?

Cranioplasty lies at the intersection of neurosurgery and plastic surgery, though little is known about the impact of plastic surgery involvement. The authors hypothesized that adult cranioplasty patients at higher volume plastic surgery facilities would have improved inpatient outcomes. Adult cranioplasty encounters were extracted from the National Inpatient Sample from 2012 to 2014 based on International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) codes. Regression models included the following variables: age, gender, race/ethnicity, Elixhauser Comorbidity Index, payer, hospital size,

Effectiveness and safety of lomitapide in a patient with familial chylomicronemia syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) is characterized by severe fasting hypertriglyceridemia, abdominal pain, and recurrent acute pancreatitis. Available triglyceride-lowering drugs are insufficient to avoid pancreatitis. Therefore, there is a significant unmet medical need for effective triglyceride-lowering drugs for patients with FCS. CASE REPORT: We report the second case of a patient with FCS and recurrent pancreatitis treated with lomitapide. Lomitapide treatment resulted in a reduction of fasting TG levels from 2897 mg/dL (32.71 mmol/L) to an average of 954 mg/dL (10.77

Efficacy and safety of denosumab treatment in a prepubertal patient with cherubism.

Background Denosumab is an inhibitor of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand, which strongly suppresses osteoclasts. Cherubism is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by symmetrical swelling of the jaws, in which the bone is replaced by a fibrous granuloma containing osteoclast-like giant cells. Case presentation We report the efficacy and safety of denosumab treatment in a prepubertal boy with progressive cherubism. The treatment consisting of eight subcutaneous denosumab injections (120 mg/dose) in 6 months not only suppressed the expansion of the osteolytic lesion

The most common patient safety issues resulting in legal action against neonatologists.

Common patient safety issues may result in injuries to babies in the newborn period. A medical malpractice lawsuit is one way in which an injured patient can obtain compensation for the injuries they sustained as the result of an error. There are a number of common areas of malpractice risk for neonatologists including the delivery room, jaundice, hypoglycemia, and late preterm infants. A better understanding of the medical malpractice system and common patient safety issues in neonatology can lead to protective strategies to reduce risk for untoward events and subsequent litigation. Strategie
