Appearing socially competent: the effects of a friend's presence on the socially anxious.

As hypothesized, while introducing themselves to another person via video, participants high in social anxiety appeared more socially competent with a friend present than when alone. We also examined three potential explanations for this effect and found that while sharing information about themselves on video, most participants high in social anxiety were verbally prompted by their friends. Furthermore, on an open ended question, participants high in social anxiety expressed less negative self-focused thoughts with a friend present than when alone, but friends' presence did not affect their s

Factor structure of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and the Social Phobia Scale.

In the study of social anxiety, it is common to differentiate between social interaction versus performance anxiety. The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale was designed to assess social interaction anxiety, and the Social Phobia Scale to assess fear of scrutiny by others (Mattick and Clarke, 1989). In common use, these scales are typically administered together and treated as subscales of a larger measure. However, the joint factor structure of these instruments has never been examined; therefore, it is unclear whether or not the items on these scales actually represent distinct aspects of socia

Emotion sensitivity and self-reported symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder across the lifespan: A population-based sample approach.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms show deficits in emotion processing, but results of prior studies have been conflicting, and little is known about developmental trajectories of emotion processing over time. We examined the association between GAD symptoms and sensitivity to recognizing emotional facial expressions (emotion sensitivity: ES) for three emotions (happiness, anger, fear) in a large, diverse, population-based sample. We hypothesized that higher anxiety scores would be associated with poorer performance, and expected that ES performance and an

Trait and state anxiety is marked by increased working memory-related parietal BOLD signal.

Anxiety is associated with compromised cognitive control functions, such as working memory. State and trait anxiety within the non-clinical population can be utilised to investigate potential neural markers for anxiety, which may help to elucidate potential prevention and intervention methods. Thirty-two healthy adults (20 female, 12 male), aged between 30 and 65 years, performed a 2-back task whilst fMRI BOLD signal was acquired using a 3T scanner. Mean BOLD signal was obtained in cognitive control network regions of interest of: left and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and poste

Immediate effects of multimodal cognitive therapy in mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Current therapeutic evidence suggests limited efficacy of the cognitive and exercise training in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) on depression, anxiety, memory retention, comprehension, calculation, concentration, orientation, dual-task performance, and sleep disorders. Nevertheless, the immediate effects of multimodal cognitive therapy (MCT) have recently developed and its individual effects remains unknown in MCI. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the immediate effects of MCT on cognitive and psychological measures between young healthy and older adults with MCI. METHODS:

Artificial Intelligence for Predicting Treatment Response in Patients With Anxiety Disorders After Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) models have been increasingly explored for predicting treatment response to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in patients with anxiety disorders. Identifying potential responders in advance may help inform treatment planning and support clinical decision-making. Although a growing number of studies have applied AI techniques in this context, reported performance estimates vary across studies, and the overall predictive accuracy has not been comprehensively quantified. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to quantify the overall per

Under pressure: What individual characteristics lead to performance of high-quality chest compressions during CPR practice sessions?

AIM: Despite well-established protocols for cardiopulmonary resuscitation training, performance during real-life cardiac arrests can be suboptimal. Understanding personal characteristics which could influence performance of high-quality chest compressions could provide insight into the practice-performance gap. This study examined chest compression performance, while employing feedback and introducing code team sounds as an anxiety-inducing factor in registered nurses using a cardiopulmonary resuscitation training manikin. METHODS: Participants included 120 registered nurses with basic life s

Screening for depression and anxiety disorders in primary care patients.

Mood and anxiety disorders are highly prevalent in primary health care. In this study we assessed performance of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) for screening of depression and anxiety disorders in a population of primary care patients. A total of 503 primary care patients consecutively admitted to the primary care medical center in Kaunas, Lithuania, completed the study. We found that the HADS subscale of depression (HADS-D) at a cutoff score of 6 or more showed the best performance screening for a major depressive episode diagnosed by means of the Mini International Neuropsy

The role of intolerance of uncertainty in social anxiety subtypes.

OBJECTIVES: Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is thought to underlie several internalizing disorders; however, it has only begun to be explored within social anxiety (SA). This study extends previous findings by examining IU's relation to performance and interaction SA subtypes and by accounting for obsessive-compulsive symptoms. METHODS: A total of 472 undergraduates completed measures of IU, SA, perfectionism, worry, obsessions/compulsions, and fear of negative evaluation (FNE). RESULTS: IU and obsessions/compulsions predicted performance SA beyond FNE. IU predicted interaction SA beyond FNE

Social Anxiety Disorder: More Than Just a Little Shyness.

Social anxiety is defined as a "marked and persistent fear of social or performance situations" and includes such symptoms as sweating, palpitations, shaking, and respiratory distress. Social anxiety is fairly common, occurring in as much as 13% of the population, and can be extremely disabling. It can be either specific (confined to 1 or 2 performance situations) or generalized, and can be diagnosed with a scale-based questionnaire. Social anxiety may coexist with other disorders, such as depression and dysthymia. The differential diagnosis for social anxiety includes panic disorder, agorapho

Test anxiety and working memory system.

The purpose was to examine the effect of test anxiety on deficits in the articulatory loop in the working memory system. We used a verbal memory task to occupy the articulatory loop and a spatial memory task to occupy the visuospatial scratch pad. 17 highly test-anxious and 19 low-anxiety subjects performed both tasks under an anxiety-inducing situation during which they were observed by a monitor camera. Percentage of correct responses and reaction times were measured as indices of task performance. Highly anxious subjects reported feeling worry and cognitive self-concern more than the low-an

Trait anxiety negatively modulates the coupling of motor event-related desynchronization and event-related synchronization.

BACKGROUND: Recent neurophysiological studies showed that patients with psychiatric disorders demonstrated abnormalities in sensorimotor functions in addition to cognitive deficits. These findings intrigued us to investigate whether trait anxiety, a persistent inclination towards being anxious in multiple contexts, would affect motor cortical functions. Event-related desynchronization (ERD) and event-related synchronization (ERS) of α and β oscillations are associated with movement execution and movement termination, respectively. However, no study has comprehensively examined the effects of t

Are attentional control resources reduced by worry in generalized anxiety disorder?

This is the first study to examine attentional control capacities in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). GAD is characterized by uncontrollable worry. Individuals diagnosed with GAD and healthy participants (HPs) performed a random key-pressing task while thinking about a worrisome or a positive future event, to assess the extent to which attentional control resources are used by worry. Attentional control was also assessed when participants were not instructed to think about a specific topic using the N-back task, which varies in task difficulty, and therefore is sensitive to subtle differenc
