Assessment of foot perfusion in patients with a diabetic foot ulcer.

Assessment of foot perfusion is a vital step in the management of patients with diabetic foot ulceration, in order to understand the risk of amputation and likelihood of wound healing. Underlying peripheral artery disease is a common finding in patients with foot ulceration and is associated with poor outcomes. Assessment of foot perfusion should therefore focus on identifying the presence of peripheral artery disease and to subsequently estimate the effect this may have on wound healing. Assessment of perfusion can be difficult because of the often complex, diffuse and distal nature of periph

Peripapillary Microvascular and Structural Parameters in Atrophic Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy, Unaffected Fellow Eyes and Controls in an Indian Population.

Nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is believed to be an ischemic insult to the optic nerve head and is one of the most common acute optic neuropathies of adulthood. Prevention of NAION in the fellow eye has not yet been accomplished. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a new and emerging non-invasive technology that provides microvascular information that complements the structural data. This prospective study is aimed to fill the lacunae in data that is available in the Indian population. We included 36 patients with NAION, their 36 fellow eyes and 37 healthy contro

Evaluation of the effect of laser irradiation with a wavelength of 445 nm on microcirculation and oxidative metabolism of gingiva according to laser doppler flowmetry.

The introduction of diode semiconductor lasers operating in the infrared spectrum has significantly advanced dental practice, elevating it to a new level of clinical efficiency. These technologies enable treatment methods that markedly reduce patient recovery time. Laser wavelengths of 810 ± 10 nm and 980 ± 10 nm are widely utilized in laser surgery and photobiomodulation. Of growing interest is the potential use of laser irradiation at a wavelength of 445 nm for photobiomodulation of oral mucosal tissues in cases of periodontal diseases and stomatitis. Using laser Doppler flowmetry, we demons

Quantitative assessment of placental perfusion by three-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound for twins with selective intrauterine growth restriction in one twin.

OBJECTIVE: We quantitatively assessed placental perfusion using three-dimensional (3D) power Doppler ultrasound for twins with selective intrauterine growth restriction (sIUGR) in one twin. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective cross-sectional study was performed for 104 normal monochorionic diamniotic twins and 30 twins with sIUGR. Twins with sIUGR were divided into two groups: in group I (19 twins), both fetuses had continuous forward end-diastolic blood flow in the umbilical artery; in group II (11 twins), the smaller fetus had a loss or a reverse end-diastolic blood flow in the umbilical artery, bu

A preliminary study on the application of electrical impedance tomography based on cerebral perfusion monitoring to intracranial pressure changes.

BACKGROUND: In intracranial pathologic conditions of intracranial pressure (ICP) disturbance or hemodynamic instability, maintaining appropriate ICP may reduce the risk of ischemic brain injury. The change of ICP is often accompanied by the change of intracranial blood status. As a non-invasive functional imaging technique, the sensitivity of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) to cerebral hemodynamic changes has been preliminarily confirmed. However, no team has conducted a feasibility study on the dynamic detection of ICP by EIT technology from the perspective of non-invasive whole-brain b

Retrograde Cerebral Perfusion in Type A Aortic Dissection Repair Is Associated With Higher Rates of Postoperative Complications.

Background The comparative short- and long-term outcomes of retrograde versus antegrade cerebral perfusion during circulatory arrest for acute type A aortic dissection repair remain debated. Methods In this single-center retrospective study, postoperative outcomes were compared between retrograde and antegrade cerebral perfusion. Retrograde cerebral perfusion was employed in older patients (median age = 72 vs. 63 years; p = 0.030), with comparable body mass index (29 vs. 28 kg/m²; p = 0.649). Results Relative to antegrade cerebral perfusion, retrograde cerebral perfusion was associated with in

Quantification of enhancement in contrast ultrasound: a tool for monitoring of therapies in liver metastases.

Ultrasound techniques are presented using the contrast agent SonoVue (Bracco, Italy) for microvascular imaging of liver metastases and for the detection of treatment-related changes in tumour perfusion. Technical requirements and examination protocols for contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in the detection of microvascularity are described. Procedures for the quantitative analysis of perfusion in follow-up examinations are explained. Compared to contrast-enhanced computed tomography, low-MI (mechanical index) CEUS with SonoVue better reflected the arterial perfusion of liver metastases. Chang

Evaluation of the effect of nifedipine upon myocardial perfusion and contractility using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and tissue Doppler echocardiography in systemic sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Primary myocardial involvement due to microcirculation impairment is common in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE) were recently shown to be more sensitive than conventional methods for the respective assessment of myocardial perfusion and contractility. Previous studies have suggested that dihydropyridine-type calcium channel blockers mitigate both myocardial perfusion and function abnormalities. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of nifedipine on myocardial perfusion by MRI and on contractility by

Hemodialysis-induced renal perfusion decline: unraveling the pathophysiological mechanisms linking intradialytic circulatory stress to residual renal function loss.

BACKGROUND: Residual renal function (RRF) plays a critical role in quality of life and survival in hemodialysis (HD) patients but characteristically declines after the initiation of HD. Owing to incomplete understanding of the pathophysiology underlying RRF decline, protective strategies remain limited. The aim of this study was to explore the dynamic changes of renal perfusion in incident HD patients with preserved RRF during dialysis sessions and to provide new strategies for RRF preservation. METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled 30 incident HD patients with preserved RRF. Renal

Value of definitive diagnostic testing in the evaluation of patients presenting to the emergency department with chest pain.

The optimal diagnostic evaluation of patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with chest pain but without myocardial infarction or unstable angina is controversial. We performed a prospective, nonrandomized, observational study of 1,195 consecutive patients presenting to the ED with chest pain but who had normal or nondiagnostic electrocardiograms and negative cardiac biomarkers. Patients (mean +/- SD age 61 +/- 15 years; 55% women) were admitted to the hospital and a standard protocol for evaluation and treatment was suggested. The use of stress myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI)

Dynamic fluorescence imaging of indocyanine green for reliable and sensitive diagnosis of peripheral vascular insufficiency.

Quantitative measurement of functional tissue perfusion is essential for early diagnosis and proper treatment of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). We have previously demonstrated that dynamic imaging of near-infrared fluorophore indocyanine green (ICG) can be a noninvasive and sensitive tool to measure tissue perfusion. In the present study, we investigated the clinical efficacy of ICG perfusion imaging method for the diagnosis of PAOD. Total nineteen PAOD patients and age-matched controls (n=10) were evaluated for lower extremity tissue perfusion using ICG perfusion imaging. The p
