Fusobacterium necrophorum septicemia following oropharyngeal infection.

Fusobacterium necrophorum septicemia developed in five patients after an oropharyngeal infection. Four patients had sore throat or neck pain, and two had findings of jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis. Metastatic abscesses, including embolic pneumonia, empyema, septic arthritis, and osteomyelitis, also occurred. Four patients recovered and one died. Proper treatment requires recognition of the oropharyngeal source of the septicemia and its differentiation from endocarditis. Antibiotic therapy should be prolonged, and metastatic abscesses drained.

Continued root formation after replantation and root canal treatment in an avulsed immature permanent tooth: a case report.

This case report describes the continued root formation following replantation and conventional root canal therapy of a traumatically avulsed open-apex tooth with suppurative apical periodontitis. A 7-year-old male patient had an avulsed upper left central incisor (tooth 21) replanted approximately 50 min after traumatic avulsion. A root canal procedure was initiated due to pulp necrosis and periapical abscess detected in the follow-up period. After endodontic treatment with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)(2)) dressing, a normal root length developed including an apical segment beyond the hard tissu

[Treatment of odontogenic abscesses].

Histories of 311 abscesses of odontogenic origin found in different tissue spaces were evaluated. Location, cause, age distribution, pathogenic germs, and therapeutical measures were discussed. The perimandibular abscess was found most frequently, the second most common was the submadibular abscess. The parapharyngeal and paratonsillary abscesses were the rarest. The age of the patients was mainly between 30 and 50 years. Most often the lower molars were the starting point of the abscess. The spectrum of pathogenic germs comprised 14 different germs. Surgical therapy which is always necessary

Oral Rehabilitation of a Patient With Generalized Inflammatory Gingival Overgrowth Exacerbated by Felodipine: A Case Report.

Gingival enlargement may manifest as a side effect of medications (calcium channel blockers, anticonvulsants, or immunosuppressants) and may be associated with inflammation, malignancy, or genetic inheritance. This condition has a significant impact on a patient's quality of life and affects their oral health status. This case report describes the management of a 68-year-old gentleman who presented with generalized gingival enlargement and chronic periapical abscess originating from tooth 34, which served as an abutment for a fixed partial prosthesis. The patient's medical history revealed tha

Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis isolated from refractory endodontic lesions are opportunistic pathogens.

The predominant cultivable microbiota from 20 refractory endodontic lesions (9 with abscesses and 11 without abscesses) were determined, and Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis were among the most predominant organisms. The number of species identified from lesions with abscesses (14.1 ± 2.6) was significantly greater (P < 0.001) than the number from lesions without abscesses (7.4 ± 5.9). Comparison of perioral isolates using repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR of the same species from the same subjects demonstrated that the endodontic and skin populations were significant

A novel histopathological classification of implant periapical lesion: A systematic review and treatment decision tree.

BACKGROUND: Implant periapical lesion (IPL), as a peri-implant disease originating from implant apex, maintains coronal osseointegration in the early stage. With the understanding to IPL increasingly deepened, IPL classification based on different elements was proposed although there still lacks an overall classification system. This study, aiming to systematically integrate the available data published in the literature on IPL associated with histopathology, proposed a comprehensive classification framework and treatment decision tree for IPL. METHODS AND FINDINGS: English articles on the to

Mixed connective tissue disease in young Saudi patient with recurrent dental abscess: A case report.

Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) or overlap syndrome is a rare disease. It has overlapping features of more than one autoimmune disease with high titer of anti-ribonucleoprotein antibodies against U1. We present a 12-year-old Saudi male patient who was presented to the dental clinic complaining from non-healing oral ulcers and multiple periapical abscesses that not responsive to extractions and the use of oral antibiotics, these symptoms were accompanied with persistent fever, headache, muscle weakness, general malaise, and painful bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy. Endodontic Microsurgery as a Primary Treatment for Pulp Canal Obliteration With Apical Periodontitis: Case Reports.

Pulp canal obliteration (PCO), commonly following dental trauma, is characterized by progressive canal calcification and may be associated with pulp necrosis and apical periodontitis (AP). Conventional root canal treatment (RCT) may be technically unfeasible or associated with a high risk of iatrogenic complications. In the case reports, we explored endodontic microsurgery (EMS) as a primary treatment strategy for managing PCO with AP. Three patients (aged 30-46 years) presented with a history of dental trauma, severe canal calcification, and radiographic evidence of apical radiolucency, with

[Treatment of deep neck infections].

BACKGROUND: The incidence of deep neck space infections has been significantly reduced by modern antibiotic therapy. These infections are relatively rare and yet the life-threatening complications merit special consideration by head and neck surgeons. PATIENTS: Seven cases of deep neck space infections as a consequence of purulent pharyngitis (3), peritonsillar abscess (2), retropharyngeal (1), and odontogenic (1) abscess are presented. Despite antibiotic therapy according to antibiogram all patients showed an increase in complaints with persisting febrile temperatures and rising inflammation

Comprehensive therapy of a fusion between a mandibular lateral incisor and supernumerary tooth: case report.

The term fusion is used to define a developmental anomaly characterised by the union of two adjacent teeth. In the case reported here, clinical and radiographic examinations suggested a unilateral fusion between the mandibular left permanent incisor and a super-numerary tooth. Radiographs showed that the fused teeth had two distinct pulp chambers and canals. A diagnosis of chronic periapical abscess of the supernumerary tooth was made. Before root canal therapy, a periodontal surgical procedure was performed to section the central incisor and its fused supernumerary. Also, odontoplasty was per

Isolation of capsulate anaerobic bacteria from orofacial abscesses.

The presence of capsulate Bacteroides spp. and anaerobic gram-positive cocci was investigated in pus specimens from 182 children with chronic orofacial infections or abscesses and in pharyngeal swabs from 26 children without inflammation. Of 216 Bacteroides spp. and anaerobic cocci isolated from clinical infections, 170 (79%) were capsulate, compared with 34 (35%) of 96 isolates from normal pharyngeal flora (p less than 0.001). The commonest organisms found to be capsulate more often from infected patients than from controls belonged to the B. melaninogenicus group. The possible evolution of e
