A 67-year-old Caucasian woman presented with chest pain suggestive of acute pericarditis. On initial evaluation the apical ballooning variant of stress-related cardiomyopathy (CMP) was present. The stress CMP and acute pericarditis resolved within a week. The patient returned in four weeks with early cardiac tamponade, which required a pericardial window. Stress cardiomyopathy (CMP) has been described as a complication of post-myocardial infarction pericarditis (Dressler syndrome). Stress CMP can also be complicated by pericarditis. We describe the novel observation where idiopathic pericardit

This review describes the microbiology, diagnosis and management of pericarditis due to anaerobic bacteria. The predominant anaerobes isolated from patients with pericarditis are Gram-negative bacilli (mostly Bacteroides fragilis group) as well as Peptostreptococcus, Clostridium, Fusobacterium, Bifidobacterium and Actinomyces spp. Anaerobic bacteria can be recovered from pericarditis resulting from the following mechanisms: (i) spread from a contiguous site of infection, either de novo or following surgery or trauma (pleuropulmonary, oesophageal fistula or perforation, and odontogenic); (ii) s

The purpose of this report is to describe a case involving a 62-year-old Moroccan woman hospitalized for generalized edema that lead to diagnosis of chronic constrictive pericarditis. Diagnosis was confirmed on the basis of pericardial calcification and typical hemodynamic findings. New imaging techniques such as cardiac MRI allow accurate anatomical and physiological assessment in difficult cases. While tuberculosis is rarely involved in industrialized countries, it is a frequent factor in developing countries. The usual treatment consists of pericardectomy in association with standard antitu

INTRODUCTION: We report a case in which ascites revealed chronic constrictive pericarditis (CCP) of tuberculous origin.
OBSERVATION: A 65 year-old man had developed ascites the past over few weeks and oedema of the lower limbs. Treatment was surgical and consisted in pericardiectomy.
DISCUSSION: Chronic constrictive pericarditis has become rare in industrialised countries with the reduction in the incidence of tuberculosis. Currently, its principle aetiologies identified are previous cardiac surgery and radiotherapy. Treatment is usually surgical and gives excellent results. This clinical ca

BACKGROUND: The appearance of pericarditis following insertion of a permanent pacemaker is not widely acknowledged in the literature.
OBJECTIVES: To describe our experience with pericarditis following 395 permanent pacemaker implantations over 2 years.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 395 consecutive patients in whom new pacing systems or pacemaker leads had been implanted over a 2 year period. We searched the records for pericarditis that developed within 1 month after pacemaker implantation according to the ICD-9 code. The incidence, clinical picture, response to

Acute pericarditis is an inflammatory disease of the pericardium of variable etiology. A viral infection may sometimes precede symptoms but frequently the etiology re-mains unknown (idiopathic pericarditis). The disease is typically associated with left-sided chest pain and ECG abnormalities mimicking acute myocardial infarction. At physical examination the characteristic finding is a pericardial friction rub. A pericardial effusion of varying extent may be present or develop in the course of the disease. Pericardial tamponade, which may develop insidiously, represents a life-threatening compl

INTRODUCTION: Among late complications of Hodgkin's disease's treatment the cardiovascular complications are important. The incidence of the late onset (later than 48 months) of chronic pericardial disease is from 11 to 50% among patients with Hodgkin's disease with irradiation in the past history.
PURPOSE AND METHODS: Authors are presenting chronic constrictive pericarditis in a case among late consequences of therapy of Hodgkin's disease. It's difficult to observe and treat, because it's a rarity. RESULTS (CASE REPORT): A male patient, who is 35 year old in the present, developed III/A2 cli

Tsutsugamushi Disease is an acute febrile illness caused by Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, which enters into the human bloodstream through the bite of leptotrombidium. It is characterized by eschar, fever and cutaneous rash. Pericardial effusion in Tsutsugamushi Disease is not a common manifestation, although a high rate of effusion was reported in autopsy in those who had died of the disease. Here, we report a case of Tsutsugamushi pericarditis documented by indirect immunofluorescent test of pericardial fluid, and give a brief review of the literature.

Coccidiomycosis is a fungal infection that rarely causes cardiac disease. Constrictive pericarditis in the setting of disseminated coccidiomycosis can be fatal, despite antifungal therapy and pericardiectomy. We report on a patient with constrictive pericarditis due to localized infection by Coccidioides immitis. The patient underwent successful surgical pericardiectomy and antifungal chemotherapy, and remains well 1 year later.

We report the case of a 62-yr-old man who presented with Lyme pericarditis leading to cardiac tamponade shortly followed by an arthritis. IgM and IgG antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi were demonstrated in serum by indirect immunofluorescence. Borrelia burgdorferi was demonstrated and identified in pericardial fluid by indirect immunofluorescence using serum from a patient with proven Lyme disease and by a monoclonal antibody immuno-gold silver stain. Spirochetes were also found in synovial biopsies using a silver stain. The tamponade was treated with pericardiocentesis; the arthritis was trea

Rheumatoid pericarditis (RP) is a well known extraarticular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It is not frequently diagnosed despite its high reported prevalence in post-mortem studies. There have been no immunohistological studies of its presence in pericardial membranes. Here we report a complete immunohistological study of two RA patients with RP complications, using a panel of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for the recognition of B, T, and NK cells. Both cases showed strong and almost exclusive pericardial membrane infiltration of CD8+ T-cells which was correlated with a higher tha

A study of pericarditis treated surgically over a period of 14.5 years was conducted to evaluate the current pattern and management of this disease in a tropical environment. The series comprised 86 patients (58 males and 28 females) aged from 5 months to 60 years (mean 21.1 years). Pericarditis was effusive in 41 patients, calcific in 33 and fibrous in 12. Aetiological or associated factors were non-specific, pyogenic infection, rheumatic heart disease, endomyocardial fibrosis, tuberculosis and amoebiasis in 36, 21, eight, eight, six and four patients, respectively. All the patients were in N

In the patient I have described, evaluation of chronic progressive pulmonary coccidioidomycosis presenting itself as cryptogenic pericarditis revealed an unsuspected large endobronchial coccidioidoma. At follow-up after 2 years of fluconazole therapy, the patient was asymptomatic, with a dramatic decrease in infiltrate but no change in CF titers. In endemic areas, coccidioidomycosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of idiopathic pericarditis, especially in high-risk patient populations. Additionally, airway obstruction or compromise might be an early finding in chronic coccidia

Between 1980 and 1990 12 patients (5 male, 7 female) were operated on for acute infectious pericarditis at a mean age of 42 years. The infections were 6 bacterial (purulent 4, abscess 2), 4 tuberculous, 1 viral and 1 Candida. Pericarditis resulted from contiguous spread of infection from bilateral pneumonia in 3 patients, from subphrenic abscess in 2 and followed bacteremia in 1. Clinical signs were: tamponade/shock in 9, elevated jugular venous pressure in 11, edema in 6, hepatomegaly in 6, ascites in 1, and pericardial friction rub in 3. A preoperative pericardiocentesis in 9 patients allowe

Twenty-seven cases of chronic constrictive pericarditis seen between 1975 and 1990 in an internal medicine department were analyzed retrospectively. The chronic pericarditis was consecutive to one (n = 5) or several (n = 7) episodes of acute pericarditis. Echography demonstrated the presence of pericardial effusion in 74 percent of the cases, pericardial thickening in 41 percent and/or compression of right heart cavities in 55 percent. Computerized tomography of the chest, performed in 16 cases, showed pericardial effusion in 63 percent of the cases, pericardial thickening in 37 percent and ly
