Prevotella denticola is an anaerobic gram-negative rod that commonly inhabits the oral cavity and is associated with periodontal and periapical infections. Vertebral osteomyelitis caused by Prevotella species is uncommon, and reports involving P. denticola are exceedingly rare. A 65-year-old man presented with progressive low back pain and difficulty walking following multiple falls. Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated L2-L3 spondylodiscitis with an epidural abscess. Fluoroscopy-guided disc aspiration and subsequent full-endoscopic spinal surgery with percutaneous endoscopic discec

This study investigated whether teaching undergraduate dental students the diagnosis and management of acute dental pain alongside the underpinning oral physiology helped them to understand the topic better than teaching them acute dental pain as a separate entity. Each of three clinical years of dental students at the same dental school was taught in two groups. Each group was taught the signs/symptoms of five acute dental pain conditions by the same member of the staff. However, the teaching for one group of students in each year reminded the students about the physiology that underpinned th

INTRODUCTION: This article describes a case of late failure after endodontic retreatment as characterized by recurrent post-treatment apical periodontitis.
METHODS: At the time of the initial treatment, the patient presented with acute apical abscess associated with a tooth with pulp necrosis caused by trauma. Four years later, the tooth was retreated because of persistent disease. The follow-up examination 28 months after retreatment showed complete healing.
RESULTS: The patient returned 11 years and 7 months later for bleaching of the discolored tooth, and although the periodontal tissues

BACKGROUND: We describe an unusual case of extra-nodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that developed in the maxillae associated with localized severe periodontitis in a 64-year-old Caucasian male. The lymphoma was diagnosed less than 2 years following routine periodontal surgery and 8 weeks after the extraction of hopeless teeth in the associated area.
METHODS: Two months following the extractions, the patient experienced pain and swelling in the maxillary right edentulous area mimicking an abscess, and reported for emergency care. An expansile lesion measuring 2.0 x 2.5 cm in diameter was noted on r

INTRODUCTION: Occurrence of post-treatment apical periodontitis characterizes the failure of endodontic treatment. This study described the histobacteriologic and histopathologic features of biopsy specimens of teeth with post-treatment apical periodontitis.
METHODS: The material comprised sequential biopsy specimens of 71 human root canal-treated teeth with apical periodontitis. Specimens were obtained by apical surgery or extraction and consisted of root apexes with attached lesions, which were processed for histobacteriologic and histopathologic evaluation of the cause of failure, infectio

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma is a very rare primary tumor of the lung. Although usually aggressive, these tumors have not been described previously to invade through the diaphragm into the liver. We present a patient with a pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma with transdiaphragmatic spread into the dome of the liver.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 82-year-old female with a lifetime non-smoking history presented with generalized fatigue, fever, night sweats, cough, and pleuritic chest pain. She had recently traveled to the western United States. Additionally, she had recently undergone

The knowledge of the final-year dental students on antibiotic use in endodontics in Turkey was assessed. The study was conducted at 20 Dentistry Faculties. A questionnaire was sent to the universities including the concerning several scenarios about endodontic cases. 1113 final-year dental students participated in the study. Respondents' significant choice was not to administrate antibiotics in endodontic treatments of symptomatic irreversible pulpitis, pulp necrosis, acute apical periodontitis, chronic apical abscess with or without sinus tract, retreatment, inadequate local anaesthesia and p

Acute conditions are mainly caused by inflammatory and infectious reactions in the dental pulp, periodontal tissues, periapical bone and the tissues around partially impacted teeth. Pain may also be related to traumatic injuries to the teeth and jaws as well as sequelae after oral surgery. Emergency treatment involves incision of abscesses, root canal treatment, irrigation with antiseptics, immobilisation of teeth or fractured bones, and prescription of analgetics. Antibiotics are only indicated in cases in which there is a risk that an infection spreads to adjacent regions or a risk of fever

There are a number of diseases and conditions that prevent the sufferer from adequately opening the mouth. The danger of inanition, malnutrition, chronic periodontal disease, caries, and abscessed teeth are very real to this population. Dental treatment issues include inadequate access to the oral cavity, inability to locally anesthetize mandibular posterior teeth, inability to gain access for traditional operative dentistry, and lack of clearance for most oral surgery procedures. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with a discussion of the various conditions and then discuss

Acute malocclusion can result from disturbances in the maxillary/mandibular tooth relationship. These alterations in the occlusal position can result from high fillings, sinus problems, abscesses, periodontal disease, and moving or erupting teeth. Conditions seen less frequently include acute malocclusions secondary to an event (such as trauma) that make a stable dental relationship an unstable one. Patients can demonstrate any of a number of clinical conditions that interfere with their comfort and ability to function. This article provides information on some of the less familiar causes of a

Parvimonas micra (P. micra), an anaerobic oral coccus long dismissed as a culture contaminant, is increasingly recognized as a causative agent of pyogenic central nervous system (CNS) infections, yet its neuropathogenesis remains poorly defined. This narrative review synthesizes 41 peer-reviewed studies identified via a structured comprehensive literature search of PubMed, Embase and Web of Science through June 2026. Epidemiologically, pooling available case reports and small series (n=64 confirmed CNS cases), P. micra is among the most frequently isolated Gram-positive anaerobic cocci in repo

INTRODUCTION: Perforating inflammatory root resorption (PIRR) in permanent teeth can cause extensive dentin loss, periodontal breakdown, and eventual tooth loss. Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) have been proposed to treat PIRR. Among them, cellular therapy based on transplantation of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) has been suggested as a potential option for treating PIRR, because of their paracrine and anti-inflammatory effects during tissue repair.
METHODS: A 13-year-old girl presented with a traumatized tooth #9 showing discoloration, a buccal sinus tract, 8-mm probing depth, t

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative infection primarily caused by anaerobic gram-positive filamentous bacteria, primarily of the genus Actinomyces. Oral-cervicofacial actinomycosis is the localization found most often, presenting as a soft tissue swelling, an abscess, a mass lesion, or sometimes an ulcerative lesion. Periodontitis-like lesions, however, are rare findings. This report describes the case of a 41-year-old healthy female patient (nonsmoker), who was referred to the clinic with dull and throbbing pain in the second quadrant. Tooth 25 showed increased mobility and probing pocket

BACKGROUND: Apical periodontitis (AP) is an inflammatory disease affecting periradicular tissues. It is a widespread condition but its etiopathogenetic mechanisms have not been completely elucidated and the current treatment options are not always successful.
PURPOSE: To compare oxidative stress (OxS) levels in the saliva and the endodontium (root canal [RC] contents) in patients with different endodontic pathologies and in endodontically healthy subjects.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study group of this comparison study included 22 subjects with primary chronic apical periodontitis (pCAP), 26

A nasal septal abscess (NA) is defined as a collection of pus between the cartilage or bony septum and its normally applied mucoperichondrium or mucoperiostium. It is an uncommon disease which should be suspected in a patient with acute onset of nasal obstruction and recent history of nasal trauma, periodontal infection or an inflammatory process of the rhinosinusal region. We report a case of an 8-year-old boy with bilateral NA caused by community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MR-CO) in order to emphasize the importance of prompt diagnosis and adequate treatment to prev
