RGD functionalized polymeric nanoparticles targeting periodontitis epithelial cells for the enhanced treatment of periodontitis in dogs.

Long term retention of antimicrobials with effective drug concentration in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) is of vital importance for the treatment of chronic periodontitis. In this study, a novel epithelial cell-targeting nanoparticle drug delivery system by conjugating minocycline-loaded poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic acid) (PEG-PLA) nanoparticles (NP-MIN) with RGD peptide were developed and administrated locally for targeting periodontitis epithelial cells and enhancing the treatment of periodontitis in dogs. Biodegradable NP-MIN was made with an emulsion/solvent evaporation technique. R

ANALYSIS OF PERIODONTAL POCKET MICROBIOTA IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC GENERALIZED PERIODONTITIS.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal diseases are considered to be among the most prevalent diseases in the maxillofacial region. As indicated by contemporary data, the etiology of inflammatory periodontal diseases is attributed to the accumulation of microbial biofilms on the surfaces of teeth in close proximity to periodontal tissues. The increased activity of periodontopathogenic bacteria can lead to the activation of the body's immune response cascade, which can contribute to the development of gingivitis and periodontitis. The objective of the present study was to investigate the composition of the

Comparison of Blood Bacterial Communities in Periodontal Health and Periodontal Disease.

The use of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques has generated a wide variety of blood microbiome data. Due to the large variation in bacterial DNA profiles between studies and the likely high concentrations of cell-free bacterial DNA in the blood, it is still not clear how such microbiome data relates to viable microbiota. For these reasons much remains to be understood about the true nature of any possible healthy blood microbiota and of bacteraemic events associated with disease. The gut, reproductive tracts, skin, and oral cavity are all likely sources of blood-borne bacteria. Oral b

A novel phage from periodontal pockets associated with chronic periodontitis.

Bacteriophages often constitute the majority of periodontal viral communities, but phages that infect oral bacteria remain uncharacterized. Here, we present the genetic analysis of the genome of a novel siphovirus, named Siphoviridae_29632, which was isolated from a patient with periodontitis using a viral metagenomics-based approach. Among 43 predicted open reading frames (ORFs) in the genome, the viral genes encoding structural proteins were distinct from the counterparts of other viruses, although a distant homology is shared among viral morphogenesis proteins. A total of 28 predicted codin

Microbial colonization of the periodontal pocket and its significance for periodontal therapy.

The aim of this paper was to evaluate strategies for periodontal therapy from the perspective of periodontal disease being a consequence of microbial colonization of the periodontal pocket environment. In classic bacterial infections the diversity of the microbiota decreases as the disease develops. In most cases of periodontitis, however, the diversity of the flora increases. Most incriminating bacteria are thought to harm tissues significantly only if present in high numbers over prolonged periods of time. Clinical trials have repeatedly demonstrated that scaling and root planing, a procedur
