An Empirical Evaluation of the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in Later Life.

Personality disorders (PDs) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) are conceptualized as distinct clinical syndromes. However, debate persists about the clinical utility of this categorical model, with many researchers supporting a dimensional model that focuses on pathological personality traits and personality dysfunction. This model was published in Section III of DSM-5 and named the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD). This study evaluated the AMPD by examining relationships between traits and dysfunction with traditional categorical PD construct

Experimental Manipulation of the BFI-2, IPIP-NEO-120, and the IPC-5.

Research assessing the relationship of the five-factor model (FFM) to personality disorder symptomatology has generally been confirmatory, with three exceptions. The exceptions have been failures to confirm associations of conscientiousness with the obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, agreeableness with dependent, and openness with schizotypal. Haigler and Widiger demonstrated empirically years ago that this was occurring because the predominant FFM measure at that time, the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised, does not include a sufficient representation of maladaptive variants of the re

Social impairment and personality disorder features among older adults: An application of the circumplex model.

The interpersonal circumplex is a model that places interpersonal problems along two axes (communion and agency), resulting in eight theoretically derived patterns. Application of the circumplex to older adults is poorly understood. Subsequently, this study examined relationships between the interpersonal circumplex and personality disorder (PD) features among older adults, since social impairments are core components of PDs. Two models of PDs were examined: the traditional model of 10 PDs and the Alternative Model of PDs (AMPD) with its personality functioning and pathological personality tra

Psychopathology and personality features in orthopedic patients with boxer's fractures.

A boxer's fracture (BF) is the most common type of metacarpal fracture and is usually an intentional injury. This study aims to investigate the severity of depressive and anxiety symptoms and evaluate the personality features of patients with BF in comparison with patients with fractures other than boxer's fractures [other fractures (OFs)] and a group of healthy controls (C). The study group was comprised of 14 patients who were diagnosed to have BF, 13 patients who were assessed due to OF and 11 C. Patients and controls were assessed with Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), State-Trait Anxiety I

Upper respiratory tract infections increase self-rated hostility and distress.

The authors administered a personality inventory, the Eysenck Personality Inventory and a distress scale, the Symptom Questionnaire, to all patients in a walk-in clinic of a general hospital during an influenza epidemic. Hostility, depression, anxiety and somatic symptoms were significantly higher in patients with upper respiratory tract infections (p less than .005); the majority scored in the range of psychiatric patients, regardless of whether patients had clinically classical influenza or merely symptoms and signs of another respiratory tract infection. There were no differences in the per

Personality traits have an effect on pain-related psychological variables in patients with chronic low back pain.

INTRODUCTION: An association between personality factors and pain experience has been investigated. However, the direct contributions of personality traits by the Maudsley Personality Inventory to clinical pain outcomes in patients with chronic pain remain unclear. The Maudsley Personality Inventory is a self-report questionnaire used to assess extroversion, neurotic tendencies, and lying or exhibitionistic tendencies. The present study aimed to investigate whether personality traits influenced with the pain-related psychological variables in patients with chronic secondary low back pain (CLBP

Personality and symptom pattern in depression.

This paper reports relationships between symptoms and premorbid personality in a varied sample of depressed patients. Symptoms were rated by a psychiatrist at clinical interview; personality was rated by patients on a self-report after clinical improvement, using the Maudsley Personality Inventory and an inventory of obsessive, hysterical and oral personality. Additional ratings on the latter were obtained at interview with a relative. The most prominent finding was that patients with premorbid neuroticism also showed a neurotic rather than an endogenous symptom pattern. Additional relationshi

Personality Beliefs in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: How Are They Related to Symptom Severity?

OBJECTIVE: The comorbidity of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and personality disorders (PDs) is frequent but there are conflicting findings about which PDs are the most common. This study aimed to investigate the personality beliefs that exist on a more pathological level among OCD patients, to explore the association between personality beliefs and OCD severity, and to clarify the mediator effect of depression in this relationship. METHODS: 202 OCD patients and 76 healthy controls with similar sociodemographic features were included in the study. The Personality Belief Questionnaire-Sho

Personality Profile of Male Adolescents With Tourette Syndrome: A Controlled Study.

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by multiple tics and commonly associated with behavioral problems, especially obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The presence of specific personality traits has been documented in adult clinical populations with Tourette syndrome but has been underresearched in younger patients. We assessed the personality profiles of 17 male adolescents with Tourette syndrome and 51 age- and gender-matched healthy controls using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent version, al

The utility of the MAPI in the assessment of depression.

The relationships between the Millon Adolescent Personality Inventory (MAPI; Millon, Green, & Meagher, 1982) and depression, as assessed by the Multiscore Depression Inventory (MDI; Berndt, 1968) were examined. Elevations on the MDI subscales were positively related to elevations on MAPI personality style Scale 2 (Inhibited) and Scale 8 (Sensitive) and on six of the eight MAPI expressed concerns scales. MAPI personality style Scale 4 (Sociable) and Scale 5 (Confident) were negatively correlated with the MDI. MAPI code types containing either Scale 2 or 8 were associated with a high MDI full-sc

Personality dimensions and measures potentially relevant to health: A focus on hostility.

Although it is clear that chronic, negative socioemotional patterns are associated with poor health and premature death, various overlapping concepts and measures are currently used, making research planning difficult and limiting attempts at theoretical development. This article reviews current issues and reports a study of 36 theoretically interesting and commonly-used personality scales that were administered to 454 undergraduates. The scales included the Cook-Medley scale, Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, the Spielberger scales, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, hardiness/alienation scale

Stable neuropsychiatric status in multiple sclerosis: a 3-year study.

Personality changes and neuropsychiatric symptoms are found in multiple sclerosis (MS), but no study has evaluated decline compared to healthy controls. This study assessed personality traits and neuropsychiatric symptoms over 3 years using the NEO Five Factor Inventory and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory. Additional metrics evaluated ambulation, manual dexterity and cognitive function. Contrary to hypothesis, patients showed no significant change in personality or neuropsychiatric status relative to controls. Patients were impaired in motor and cognitive function at baseline and follow-up, but

Beyond (low) Agreeableness: Toward a more comprehensive understanding of antagonistic psychopathology.

In clinical psychopathology research, up to seven traits have been suggested as instances of antagonistic psychopathology. Those antagonistic traits, in turn, are commonly viewed as reflections of low Agreeableness as per the Big Five (BF-AG). However, specific theoretical differences between antagonistic traits suggest that other broad, basic dimensions beyond BF-AG ought to provide further points of correspondence. Specifically, whereas primarily affective antagonistic traits are closely aligned with BF-AG, primarily behavioral antagonistic traits are better aligned with Honesty-Humility (HH

The Mental Effect of Music on the Personal State in Terms of Depressive Personality Disorders.

The use of music as a basis for overcoming depressive personality disorders is possible only if the individual is ready for this therapy. Music therapy affects, first of all, the very structure of personality, its dynamic filling with current social and political tendencies, and allows to highlight problem areas, which are often viewed as complex in the structure of other psychological problems. The purpose of the current study was the determination and justification of the corresponding criteria in relation to this, as well as the methodology for diagnosing the studied phenomenon.
