Visual perception and appraisal of persons with impairments: a randomised controlled field experiment using photo elicitation.

PURPOSE: Visual cues from persons with impairments may trigger stereotypical generalisations that lead to prejudice and discrimination. The main objective of this pilot study is to examine whether visual stimuli of impairment activate latent prejudice against disability and whether this connection can be counteracted with priming strategies. METHODS: In a field experiment, participants were asked to rate photographs showing models with mental impairments, wheelchair users with paraplegia, and persons without any visible impairment. Participants should appraise the models with regard to severa

Neurophysiologic and neurocognitive case profiles of Andean patients with chronic environmental lead poisoning.

This report presents case profiles of three siblings in a family of lead (Pb) glazing workers living in a Pb-contaminated Andean village who presented with extreme plumbism (blood Pb levels: 47 to 128 microg/dl) from childhood to adolescence. These cases are examples of persons who have chronic Pb poisoning as a result of prolonged occupational and environmental exposure in a Pb-glazing ceramic cottage industry in the study area. Using behavioral and physiological techniques for measuring the integrity of the peripheral and central auditory systems, including otoacoustic emissions, and replica

SENSEYE: a resource-aware visionary framework for assisting individuals with visual disabilities.

Despite significant recent advances, visual aid systems are still limited by the use of conventional computer vision algorithms, constrained sensor capabilities, high power consumption, and reliance on cloud-based processing, which introduce latency and privacy risks. Current assistive technologies for visually impaired individuals often suffer from a lack of secure and competent communication and an inability to deal with complex computer vision tasks. This paper introduces SENSEYE, a resource-aware visionary framework that employs edge computing with a secure and competent communication mech

An Indoor Accessibility Assessment Framework Based on Multimodal Sensing and Explainable Machine Learning: A Case Study of a Tactile Museum for People with Visual Impairments.

As accessibility development in public buildings has gradually shifted from facility compliance toward experience- and performance-oriented evaluation, the quantitative assessment of indoor mobility experiences among blind users still lacks a systematic sensor-supported analytical framework. To address this gap, this study proposes an indoor accessibility assessment approach that integrates multi-sensor data acquisition with explainable machine learning, using a tactile museum as the experimental setting. Sixty-four participants with first-level blindness were recruited to complete a real-worl

Deep Learning-Based Positioning of Visually Impaired People in Indoor Environments.

Wayfinding and navigation can present substantial challenges to visually impaired (VI) people. Some of the significant aspects of these challenges arise from the difficulty of knowing the location of a moving person with enough accuracy. Positioning and localization in indoor environments require unique solutions. Furthermore, positioning is one of the critical aspects of any navigation system that can assist a VI person with their independent movement. The other essential features of a typical indoor navigation system include pathfinding, obstacle avoidance, and capabilities for user interact

Instrument for locating students with suspected learning disabilities: a quantitative approach.

The instrument to locate students with learning disabilities was developed to create equality and uniformity, so that such difficulties could be spotted independently of socialization factors, teachers and parents to whom the student had been exposed. The instrument was developed on the basis of research that defines the reading rate of students with reading disabilities in words per minute, the minimum number of errors for locating writing disabilities, and the number of answers and lines a student uses to reconstruct the content of a passage adapted to his or her age level. The research carr

Effects of modified orthography on the identification of printed words.

Research has shown that instructional methods involving pairing pictures with print interfere with identification of written words. Preliminary evidence, however, indicates that use of modified orthography (where a line drawing is superimposed upon the printed word) may be effective for reading instruction with individuals who have mental retardation. In the present study, we used a single-subject parallel treatments design with 4 adults who had moderate to severe mental retardation. They received reading instruction under two conditions--traditional and modified orthography. Results showed th

Brain-computer interface (BCI) evaluation in people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) might restore communication to people severely disabled by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or other disorders. We sought to: 1) define a protocol for determining whether a person with ALS can use a visual P300-based BCI; 2) determine what proportion of this population can use the BCI; and 3) identify factors affecting BCI performance. Twenty-five individuals with ALS completed an evaluation protocol using a standard 6 × 6 matrix and parameters selected by stepwise linear discrimination. With an 8-channel EEG montage, the subjects fell into two groups in BCI

Mapping the meanings of novel visual symbols by youth with moderate or severe mental retardation.

The word-learning ability of 12 school-age subjects with moderate or severe mental retardation was assessed. Subjects had little or no functional speech and used the System for Augmenting Language with visual-graphic symbols for communication. Their ability to fast map novel symbols revealed whether they possessed the novel name-nameless category (N3C) lexical operating principle. On first exposure, 7 subjects were able to map symbol meanings for novel objects. Follow-up assessments indicated that mappers retained comprehension of some of the novel words for up to delays of 15 days and general
