Eligibility, Participation, and Matching Outcomes of International Pharmacy Graduates in Accredited Pharmacy Residency Programs in Canada: A Policy Scan and Cross-Sectional Analysis.

BACKGROUND: International pharmacy graduates (IPGs) are underrepresented in Canadian hospitals. It has been speculated that structural factors, particularly limited access to residency programs, may contribute to IPGs' disproportionate streaming toward community pharmacy practice. OBJECTIVES: To review the criteria of accredited hospital pharmacy residency programs in Canada to determine whether IPGs are eligible to apply, to examine the extent of IPGs' participation and success in securing hospital pharmacy residency positions, and to determine the factors that influence success in the match

Comparing rates of primary medication nonadherence and turnaround time among patients at a health system specialty pharmacy compared with external specialty pharmacies.

BACKGROUND: Access to specialty medications prescribed for complex and debilitating conditions is often delayed or unsuccessful. Specialty pharmacies can streamline medication access and timely delivery. OBJECTIVE: To compare primary medication nonadherence (PMN), the rate at which a prescription is written but not obtained by the patient, and turnaround time (TAT) between patients filling specialty medication with an integrated health system specialty pharmacy (HSSP) and those using external specialty pharmacies (non-HSSP). METHODS: A retrospective single-center cohort study was performed b

Considerations for Offering an Extended Online Doctor of Pharmacy Program.

An extended online Doctor of Pharmacy pathway with immersion experiences for laboratory skills and experiential learning was launched to address the existing and emerging challenges in pharmacy education and practice. This pathway is responsive to the changing demographics of students pursuing higher education, with an increased focus on adult learners who balance life and school responsibilities. This pathway is also responsive to enrollment and workforce shortages by engaging a different population of pharmacy students and providing an option for them to continue living and working in their

Filling the fellowship gap: A structured program for pharmacy students.

BACKGROUND: Postgraduate fellowships for Doctor of Pharmacy students are diverse in their nature and expectations. Although fellowships have long been an avenue for advanced training, the lack of a centralized accreditation process means students are often navigating these opportunities on their own. The objective of this paper is to describe the structure and preliminary outcomes of the fellowship portion of a novel Fellowship and Residency Advising Program (FRAP) at an urban public university. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY: The fellowship portion of FRAP facilitates progression to postgraduate train

Comparing Telepharmacy to Conventional Pharmacy Care: An Economic Evaluation.

Telehealth has become a mainstream healthcare delivery methods driven by advances in health technology, evolving patient preferences, and the need for more accessible and affordable care. While traditional pharmacy models remain effective, they face numerous challenges, including medication access, patient privacy, and cost efficiency. To understand the impact of telepharmacy and perform a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) in three popular therapeutic areas - obesity, erectile dysfunction, and dermatological care. A cost-benefit analysis was performed from the patient cash-pay perspective, comparing

Predicting GLP-1 Discontinuation From Pharmacy Claims.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have rapidly become high-visibility therapies for type 2 diabetes and obesity, with growing evidence of cardiovascular benefit. Yet multiple real-world studies show that adherence and persistence are modest: In obesity cohorts without diabetes, approximately one-third of members remain on therapy at 1 year, and among those with type 2 diabetes, nearly half discontinue by 12 months and approximately 70% by 24 months. This gap between trial efficacy and real-world use raises critical questions for payers, pharmacy benefit managers, and employ

Prescription opioid spillovers: Retail pharmacy level analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) are state-level initiatives designed to curb opioid misuse. This study investigates the impact of "must-access" PDMP mandates-which require healthcare providers to consult the PDMP database before prescribing opioids-on retail opioid sales in the United States. It also examines potential spillover effects on neighboring states without such mandates. METHODS: A generalized difference-in-differences analysis assessed the effect of PDMP mandate implementation on retail opioid sales from 2006 to 2014. The study utilized geocoded data enc

Knowledge of immunosuppressants and transplant patient management in community pharmacy.

BACKGROUND: Immunosuppressive therapies are essential for transplant recipients and are increasingly prescribed in autoimmune and oncologic conditions. In France, community pharmacists are legally involved in therapeutic patient education (TPE) and medication counseling. However, their level of knowledge regarding immunosuppressive therapies remains poorly documented. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the knowledge of French pharmacy professionals-pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy students-regarding Immunosuppressive therapies, particularly in the context of transplant pati

A Review of Medication Errors and the Second Victim in Pediatric Pharmacy.

The concept of the second victim, described as the sense of victimization of health care professionals following the exposure to a traumatic, unanticipated medical error, was first introduced in 2000 by Albert W. Wu. Since then, the concept has gained immense traction and inspired the generation of assistance programs for second victims. With most second victim occurrences resulting from medication errors, pediatric pharmacists are at a high risk of experiencing second victim phenomenon. Second victims may experience both psychological and physical symptoms of distress often akin to post-traum

Topical Corticosteroid Phobia among Danish Pharmacy Staff.

INTRODUCTION: Topical corticosteroid (TCS) phobia may negatively impact treatment adherence. Currently, there are few studies exploring trust and knowledge of TCS use among pharmacy staff. The objective of this work was to examine TCS knowledge and possible phobia among Danish pharmacy staff. METHODS: A questionnaire, based on Topical Corticosteroid Phobia (TOPICOP©) questionnaire, was developed and rephrased to fit pharmacy staff. The questions were Likert scales and numerical rating scales (NRS) (0-10). In October/November 2021, 64 pharmacies were invited. If the pharmacies agreed to partic

Substantial non-compliance of online pharmacy catalogues with guidelines.

Online pharmacies are popular worldwide. In Germany, there were 150 active online pharmacies in 2022. As the competition is therefore fierce and new customers need to be acquired, some of these online pharmacies create catalogues that advertise products in self-medication to attract the interest of potential customers. This study analyzed the allergy, cold, and gastrointestinal tract categories from the summer/spring 2023 catalogues of two different online pharmacies in Germany. A comparison of the active ingredients in both catalogues and an analysis of the product's conformity with the Germa

Community pharmacy is the key to improving vitamin D levels.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D is an essential micronutrient that participates in the body's fundamental physiological processes. The pharmacist should involve the patient in his medication adherence, leading to a change in the patient's attitude towards his medication and towards his health problem, in order to achieve the pharmacological objective set. METHODS: Quasi-experimental multicenter study design with non-probabilistic convenience sampling. A pharmacist-led intervention in health education was carried out, divided in two groups, face-to-face interview and on-line survey, and the results we

Pharmacy education in traditional and complementary medicines - A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Traditional and complementary medicines (T&CMs) are not typically covered in medical curricula despite 80% of the world's population using some form of herbal product as part of their healthcare. Concurrent use of T&CMs with conventional therapies is common, and both are primarily accessed in pharmacies. There is an expectation that pharmacists should be knowledgeable about T&CMs. Therefore, this review aimed to investigate what is currently known about pharmacists' T&CMs education and training to inform developments in pharmacy education. METHODS: Eligible studies published betwe
