A cryogenic apparatus for coupling two-dimensional materials to a confocal multimode optical cavity.

Two-dimensional van der Waals materials exhibit a variety of correlated electron phases, and optical driving offers a promising route toward manipulating them. For example, cavity-enhanced, continuous-wave (CW) Raman excitation has been suggested as a way to coherently and superradiantly populate phonons or charge density waves via material excitons. A steady-state phonon population may be sustained with sufficiently strong electron-phonon coupling to drive a novel collective response. We describe an apparatus built to meet the requirements of such an experimental program: Namely, an ultrahigh

Low lattice thermal conductivity driven by weak interlayer interaction and acoustic-optical coupling in the SrZnSbF thermoelectric material.

The thermoelectric performance of the SrZnSbF compound is comprehensively evaluated using first-principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory in present study. The electronic band structure shows that the SrZnSbF compound is semiconductor with a direct bandgap of 0.64 eV. A comprehensive evaluation of elastic modulus calculations, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and the phonon dispersion confirmed that the SrZnSbF compound has excellent thermal and dynamic stabilities. The weak interlayer van der Waals forces between [Sr2F2]2+ and [Zn2Sb2]2- layers, the distribution character

Interplay of symmetry breaking and bilayer coupling in Janus MSe0.5Te0.5 thermoelectrics.

The interplay of symmetry breaking and interlayer coupling in Janus bilayers offers a powerful pathway for optimizing thermoelectric performance in two-dimensional materials. In this work, we systematically investigate Janus MSe0.5Te0.5 (M = Ga, In, Tl) homo-bilayers using first-principles density functional theory combined with Boltzmann transport formalism. Structural stability is confirmed through phonon dispersion and binding energy analyses, demonstrating both dynamical and energetic robustness. We find that the coupling between layers, together with broken out-of-plane mirror symmetry, i

Metavalent-Like Bonding Character Drives Giant Anharmonicity and Ultralow Thermal Conductivity in Rocksalt BeO.

Identifying materials with intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity (κL) underpins thermoelectric and phase-change technologies, yet simple structural descriptors often fail to capture how chemical bonding controls lattice dynamics. Here, we compare thermal transport in two BeO polymorphs of identical chemistry and atomic mass: covalent zincblende (zb) and metavalent-like rocksalt (rs). Despite being denser, rs-BeO exhibits a κL more than an order of magnitude below zb-BeO (24 vs 357 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K), breaking the conventional density-κL correlation. Ab initio bonding analysis traces

Cryogenic Hole Transport in 2D Indium Selenide.

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) indium selenide (InSe) holds great promise for next-generation semiconductors for beyond-silicon electronics, but its practical implementation and fundamental transport studies have been largely limited to n-type operations. In this work, we demonstrate p-type InSe field-effect transistors utilizing high-work-function Pt bottom contacts and hexagonal boron nitride encapsulation, enabling metallic hole injection down to 1.5 K and an impurity-limited mobility exceeding 3,000 cm2/(V s). Temperature (T)-dependent transport measurements reveal a metal-insulator

Penta-graphene and phagraphene: thermal expansion, linear compressibility, and Poisson's ratio.

Nonplanar penta-graphene and planar phagraphene, which are connected by carbon pentagons and penta-hexa-hepta carbon rings, respectively, are two allotropes of graphene. Graphene as a star material in two-dimensional materials has been widely studied. However, the studies around penta-graphene and phagraphene are still insufficient. We are interested in both materials' response to temperature, hydrostatic pressure, and stress. In this work, the thermal expansion, linear compressibility, and Poisson's ratio of penta-graphene and phagraphene have been investigated systematically. It is found tha

Loss-engineered reconfigurable polaritons.

Phonon polaritons, with their strong field confinement, enable extreme miniaturization of photonic devices. While optical loss is conventionally perceived as a fundamental limit to be compensated, here we demonstrate a novel scheme by harnessing leakage-induced loss as a degree of freedom for mode manipulation. By coupling 2D hyperbolic polaritons (e.g., α-MoO3) with 3D bulk leaky channels (e.g., β-Ga2O3), we achieve a topological reconstruction into quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) polaritons over a broad frequency range. In the frequency domain, out-of-plane phonon-driven leakage in the subs

Emerging Yttrium Phosphides with Tetrahedron Phosphorus and Superconductivity under High Pressures.

Metal phosphides have triggered growing interest for their exotic structures and striking properties. Hence, within advanced structure search and first-principle calculations, several unprecedented Y-P compounds (e. g., Y3 P, Y2 P, Y3 P2 , Y2 P3 , YP2 , and YP3 ) were identified under compression. Interestingly, as phosphorus content increases, P atoms exhibit diverse behaviors corresponding to standalone anion, dumbbell, zigzag chain, planar sheet, crossing chain-like network, buckled layer, three-dimensional framework, and wrinkled layer. Particularly, Fd-3m YP2 can be viewed as assemblage o

Localised Ag(+) vibrations at the origin of ultralow thermal conductivity in layered thermoelectric AgCrSe2.

In materials science, the substructure approach consists in imagining complex materials in which a particular property is associated with a distinct structural feature, so as to combine different chosen physical characteristics, which otherwise have little chance to coexist. Applied to thermoelectric materials, it has been used to achieve simultaneously phonon-glass and electron-crystal properties. Mostly studied for its superionic conductivity, AgCrSe2 is a naturally layered compound, which achieves very low thermal conductivity, ~0.4 W.K(-1).m(-1) at RT (room temperature), and is considered

Ab initio study of mechanical and thermal properties of GeTe-based and PbSe-based high-entropy chalcogenides.

GeTe-based and PbSe-based high-entropy compounds have outstanding thermoelectric (TE) performance and crucial applications in mid and high temperatures. Recently, the optimization of TE performance of high-entropy compounds has been focused on reducing thermal conductivity by strengthening the phonon scattering process to improve TE performance. We report a first-principles investigation on nine GeTe-based high-entropy chalcogenide solid solutions constituted of eight metallic elements (Ag, Pb, Sb, Bi, Cu, Cd, Mn, and Sn) and 13 PbSe-based high-entropy chalcogenide solid solutions: Pb0.99-ySb0

Fluorite-related iridate Pr3IrO7: crystal growth, structure, magnetism, thermodynamic, and optical properties.

Spin-orbit coupling in heavy 5dmetal oxides, in particular, iridates have received tremendous interest in recent years due to the realization of exotic electronic and magnetic phases. Here, we report the synthesis, structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and optical properties of the ternary iridate Pr3IrO7. Single crystals of Pr3IrO7have been grown by the KF flux method. Structural analysis shows that Pr3IrO7crystallizes in an orthorhombic phase withCmcmsymmetry. The electron energy loss spectroscopy study indicates that Pr is in a 3+ valence state, which implies a 5+ oxidation state of Ir. Magn

Sliding-Ferroelectric hBN Bilayer Controlled Carrier Lifetimes in TMD Heterostructures.

Sliding ferroelectricity in bilayer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) provides an atomically sharp, nonvolatile knob for engineering interfacial polarization in van der Waals heterostructures. Here, we combine time-dependent density functional theory with nonadiabatic molecular dynamics to study how stacking-dependent ferroelectric polarization in bilayer hBN can be used to tune charge redistribution, electron-phonon coupling, and nonradiative carrier recombination in MoSe2/hBN and WSe2/hBN heterostructures. Switching the bilayer hBN stacking between nonpolar AA' and ferroelectric AB/BA reverses t

Structural Stability and Thermoelectric Properties of CoSbS under High Pressure.

The structural stability of CoSbS under extremely high-pressure conditions was investigated by using in situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction. Remarkably, CoSbS demonstrates exceptional structural stability even at ∼60 GPa. Building upon these stable structural characteristics, we employed first-principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory to analyze the electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of CoSbS under high pressure. The study reveals that pressure significantly modifies the electronic structure of CoSbS, leading to a progressive reduction in the band gap, pronounced

Electronic structures and charge transport mobilities in hybrid organic-inorganic mixed Sn-Pb alloyed perovskites.

An all-perovskite tandem cell based on narrow-bandgap mixed tin-lead (Sn-Pb) alloyed perovskites is a potential photovoltaic device whose power conversion efficiency can exceed the Shockley-Queisser limit of a single-junction solar cell, 33%. However, comprehensive descriptions of the charge-carrier mobilities and transport mechanisms in the mixed Sn-Pb perovskite system remain elusive. Herein, we integrate density functional theory (DFT) calculations with charge transport models to provide more insight into the electronic structures and transport behaviors of these materials. We specifically

Tuning Spin-Polarized Lifetime at High Carrier Density through Deformation Potential in Dion-Jacobson-Phase Perovskites.

The control of spin relaxation mechanisms is of great importance for spintronics applications as well as for fundamental studies. Layered metal-halide perovskites represent an emerging class of semiconductors with rich optical spin physics, showing potential for spintronic applications. However, a major hurdle arises in layered metal-halide perovskites with strong spin-orbit coupling, where the spin lifetime becomes extremely short due to D'yakonov-Perel' scattering and Bir-Aronov-Pikus at high carrier density. Using the circularly polarized pump-probe transient reflection technique, we experi

Achieving Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity and High Thermoelectric Performance in GeTe Alloys via Introducing Cu2Te Nanocrystals and Resonant Level Doping.

The binary compound of GeTe emerging as a potential medium-temperature thermoelectric material has drawn a great deal of attention. Here, we achieve ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and high thermoelectric performance in In and a heavy content of Cu codoped GeTe thermoelectrics. In dopants improve the density of state near the surface of Femi of GeTe by introducing resonant levels, producing a sharp increase of the Seebeck coefficient. In and Cu codoping not only optimizes carrier concentration but also substantially increases carrier mobility to a high value of 87 cm2 V-1 s-1 due to the

Anisotropic in-plane thermal transport in monolayer ReSe2 and its modulation through layer control and selenium vacancies: experiment vs. theory.

Understanding phonon transport and thermal anisotropy in two-dimensional (2D) materials is essential for their integration into electronic and thermal nanoscale devices. In this work, we achieved the growth of large-area, contamination-free monolayer rhenium diselenide (ReSe2) via chemical vapor deposition, confirmed by atomic force microscopy and HAADF-STEM imaging. To probe its anisotropic thermal properties, we employed non-contact low-temperature Raman spectroscopy with unpolarized laser excitation to measure its thermal conductivity (κ). We report an exceptionally low value of in-plane th
