Source apportionment of volatile organic compounds during paddy-residue burning season in north-west India reveals large pool of photochemically formed air toxics.

Paddy-residue burning is associated with poor air quality in north-west India during October-November every year. However, till date a quantitative study of its contribution to ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using highly time-resolved measurements within the region has been lacking. Several VOCs like benzene are carcinogenic and also fuel formation of secondary pollutants such as secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and ozone. Here, we undertake quantitative source-apportionment using a PMF source-receptor model on a high-quality in-situ measured dataset of 54 VOCs in Punjab, India, and

Effect of far-red light exposure on photosynthesis and photoprotection in tomato plants transgenic for the Agrobacterium rhizogenes rolB gene.

Previous work showed in tomato plants harbouring the Agrobacterium rhizogenes rolB gene overexpression of genes involved in chloroplast function and stress response, significant increase in non-photochemical quenching and chlorophyll a and b content, and reduced chlorophyll a/b ratio. The latter condition being typical of plant shade where far-red is dominant, suggested a role for rolB in improving photosynthesis in such condition. To gain a better insight into these results, the photosynthetic performance of transgenic and control plants was compared by means of variable fluorescence kinetics

Electrically driven chiral emission from plasmonic tunnel junctions.

Chirality plays a crucial role in a broad range of processes, including light-matter interactions in physics, chemistry, and biology, while quantum tunneling provides a promising mechanism for light generation at the nanoscale. By integrating tunnel junctions with chiral plasmonic nanohelicoids, we achieved electrically induced nanoscale generation of chiral light at the single-particle level. The tunneling-driven resonant excitation of chiral dipolar modes of the nanohelicoids results in emission of a vortex light beam possessing both spin angular momentum with handedness selectivity of more

Acetone Serving as a Solvent and Interaction Partner Promotes the Direct Olefination of N-Tosylhydrazones under Visible Light.

The photochemistry of noncovalent interactions to promote organic transformations is an emerging approach to providing fresh opportunities in synthetic chemistry. Generally, the external substance is necessary to add as an interaction partner, thereby sacrificing the atom economy of the reaction. Herein, we describe a catalyst-free and noncovalent interaction-mediated strategy to access the olefination of N-tosylhydrazones using acetone as a solvent and an interaction partner. This protocol also features broad substrate scope, excellent functional group compatibility, and mild reaction conditi

Salicylideneaniline/Dithienylethene Hybrid Molecular Switches: Design, Synthesis, and Photochromism.

A hybrid molecular switch comprising salicylideneaniline (SA) and dithienylethene (DTE) moieties around a single benzene ring is reported. Due to an interplay between solvent-assisted enol-keto tautomerization in the former moiety and photochromic electrocyclization in the latter, this dithienylbenzene derivative was found to be photoresponsive at room temperature with a thermally stable closed form. The main photoproduct featuring ring-closed DTE and keto-enamine SA structures could be isolated and converted back to the starting material by irradiation with visible light. The optical properti

Methylmercury Biogeochemistry in Freshwater Ecosystems: A Review Focusing on DOM and Photodemethylation.

Mercury contamination is a growing concern for freshwater food webs in ecosystems without point sources of mercury. Methylmercury (MeHg) is of particular concern, as this is the form of mercury that crosses the blood-brain barrier and is neurotoxic to organisms. Wetlands and benthic sediments have high organic content and low oxygen availability. Anaerobic bacteria drive the metabolic function in these ecosystems and subsequently can methylate mercury. The bioavailability of MeHg is controlled by physicochemical characteristics such as pH, binding affinities, and dissolved organic matter (DOM)

Structure-Activity Relationship of Semicarbazone EGA Furnishes Photoaffinity Inhibitors of Anthrax Toxin Cellular Entry.

EGA, 1, prevents the entry of multiple viruses and bacterial toxins into mammalian cells by inhibiting vesicular trafficking. The cellular target of 1 is unknown, and a structure-activity relationship study was conducted in order to develop a strategy for target identification. A compound with midnanomolar potency was identified (2), and three photoaffinity labels were synthesized (3-5). For this series, the expected photochemistry of the phenyl azide moiety is a more important factor than the IC50 of the photoprobe in obtaining a successful photolabeling event. While 3 was the most effective

Fluorescence excitation spectrum of bilirubin in blood: a model for the action spectrum for phototherapy of neonatal jaundice.

A recent report (Lamola et al. 2013 Pediatric Research, 74, 54-60) presents a semiempirical model for facile calculation of an action spectrum for bilirubin photochemistry in vivo using the most current knowledge of the optics of neonatal skin. The calculations indicate that competition for phototherapy light by hemoglobin in the skin is the predominant factor that defines the spectrum of light absorbed by bilirubin. If the latter is correct, a valid physical analog of the calculated spectrum is the excitation spectrum of bilirubin in blood. The fluorescence excitation spectrum was recorded an

Ozone formation from illuminated titanium dioxide surfaces.

The nitrogen oxides (NO(x)) decomposition on illuminated TiO(2) surfaces has been widely studied, but little is known about the subsequent formation of non-nitrogen containing products. In this study, TiO(2) coated glass surfaces and TiO(2) films with nitrate anions (either premixed with TiO(2) as KNO(3) or deposited from gaseous NO(x)) are irradiated with broad-band light. Upon irradiation, detected gas phase products include NO(2), HNO(2), and O(3). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that reveals the production of O(3) from TiO(2) surfaces. By surface charge transfer react

Cell design for picosecond time-resolved infrared spectroscopy in high-pressure liquids and supercritical fluids.

The design of a new high-pressure infrared (IR) cell for carrying out picosecond time-resolved infrared (ps-TRIR) spectroscopy in supercritical fluids is described. We have employed thin (2 mm) MgF(2) windows in order to overcome possible undesirable nonlinear optical effects caused by the extremely high peak powers of ultrashort ultraviolet (UV)/visible pulses. The design of our cell allows for the study of systems at pressures of up to 5500 psi at temperatures of up to approximately 50 degrees C. The MgF(2) windows enable the excitation of samples with both UV and visible light pulses and th

Direct quantum dynamics using variational multi-configuration Gaussian wavepackets. Implementation details and test case.

We present here a direct quantum dynamics method using variational multi-configuration Gaussian wavepackets. Based on the efficient multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree wavepacket propagation algorithm, it uses on-the-fly quantum chemical calculation of the potential energy and its derivatives rather than fitted surfaces. Intermediate results are stored in a database so that expensive quantum chemical computations can be recycled. This method is intended to treat quantum effects in the photochemistry of large molecules and the use of Cartesian coordinates to perform direct dynamics is di

Fatty acid enhancement of the quantum yield for the formation of lumirubin from bilirubin bound to human albumin.

During phototherapy for neonatal jaundice, bilirubin is converted into a number of different polar photoproducts. Because fatty acids are bound to human albumin in vivo and have been shown to affect the binding of bilirubin to albumin, we examined the effect of various fatty acids on the photochemistry of albumin-bound bilirubin. Fatty acids of carbon chain length of 10 or more were found to increase by as much as 3-fold the quantum yield for formation of lumirubin, an intramolecularly cyclized isomer of bilirubin. The binding of these same fatty acids was found to affect visible absorption an

Chlorophyll a fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy can monitor activation/deactivation of photosynthesis and carotenoids in Antarctic lichens.

Lichens survive harsh weather of Antarctica as well as of other hostile environments worldwide. Therefore, this investigation is important to understand the evolution of life on Earth in relation to their stress tolerance strategy. We have used chlorophyll a fluorescence (ChlF) and Raman spectroscopy, respectively, to monitor the activation/deactivation of photosynthesis and carotenoids in three diverse Antarctic lichens, Dermatocarpon polyphyllizum (DP), Umbilicaria antarctica (UA), and Leptogium puberulum (LP). These lichens, post 4 h or 24 h of hydration, showed differences in their ChlF tr

Oxidation of tyrosine photoinduced by pterin in aqueous solution.

Pterins, heterocyclic compounds widespread in biological systems, accumulate in the skin of patients suffering from vitiligo, a chronic depigmentation disorder. Pterins have been previously identified as good photosensitizers under UV-A irradiation. In this work, we have investigated the ability of pterin (Ptr), the parent compound of oxidized pterins, to photosensitize the oxidation of tyrosine (Tyr) in aqueous solutions. Tyr is an important target in the study of the photodynamic effects of UV-A radiation because it is oxidized by singlet oxygen ((1)O2) and plays a key role in polymerization

Biofixation of CO2 from synthetic combustion gas using cultivated microalgae in three-stage serial tubular photobioreactors.

Coal is the most abundant of the fossil fuels, with reserves estimated at 102 billions of tons. The feasibility of using coal as a fuel depends upon reducing emissions of gas when it is burnt, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur oxides (SO(x)), and nitrogen oxides (NO(x)). The removal of CO2 with microalgae may be one of the most efficient ways of reducing this gas, without the need for radical changes in the world's energy supply and production methods. Spirulina sp. LEB-18 and Scenedesmus obliquus LEB-22 were cultivated in serial tubular photobioreactors, with the aim of measuring the poten

Photodissociation of 3-bromo-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-propanol at 193 nm: laser-induced fluorescence detection of OH(nu'' = 0, J'').

Photodissociation of 3-bromo-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-propanol (BTFP) has been investigated at 193 nm, employing the laser photolysis laser-induced fluorescence technique. The nascent OH product was detected state selectively, and the energy released into translation, rotation, and vibration of the photoproducts has been measured. OH is produced mostly vibrationally cold, with a moderate rotational excitation, which is characterized by a rotational temperature of 640 +/- 140 K. However, an appreciable amount of the available energy of 36.1 kcal mol(-1) is released into translation of OH (15.1 kcal mo

Photochemical fine-tuning of luminescent color of cadmium selenide nanoparticles: fabricating a single-source multicolor luminophore.

Size-selective photoetching was applied to silica-coated cadmium selenide (SiO2/CdSe) nanoparticles to precisely control their photoluminescence properties. The absorption spectra of CdSe was blue-shifted by irradiation of monochromatic light, and finally, the absorption onset agreed with the wavelength of irradiation light, indicating that CdSe particles were photoetched to smaller ones until the irradiated photons were not absorbed by the photoetched particles and that the SiO2 shell layer surrounding the CdSe core prevented coalescence between the photoetched particles. Although as-prepared

Photostability of bacteriochlorophyll a and derivatives: potential sensitizers for photodynamic tumor therapy.

The photostabilities of bacteriochlorophyll a and several of its derivatives, which are of interest as potential sensitizers in photodynamic tumor therapy, were investigated. The pigments were irradiated with light >630 nm in organic solvents (acetone, tetrahydrofuran, pyridine, methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, 2-propanol and toluene) and in aqueous detergent solutions (cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide [CTAB], lauryldimethyl-aminoxide [LDAO] or sodium dodecyl-sulfate [SDS] and Triton X-100 [TX100]). Their stabilities in these different solvents were determined in the presence and absence of an e

[Formations and reactions of aromatic furazan compounds].

A reaction from various kinds of nitroquinoline with hydroxylamine in potassium hydroxide alkalinity produced a novel product, furazanoquinoline, besides the known amino derivatives. The products obtained were furazano [3,4-f] quinoline (5) from 5-nitroquinoline (1) and 6-nitroquinoline (6), and furazano [3,4-h] quinoline (10) from 7-nitroquinoline (8) and 8-nitroquinoline (11). The reaction mechanism was believed to be as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The photoreaction of benzofuroxan (19) in acetonitrile containing a little water, under a high pressure mercury lamp, produced 1H-azepine-2,7-dione (
