Different effects of migraine associated features on headache impact, pain intensity, and psychiatric conditions in patients with migraine.

Migraine is a multifactorial brain disorder characterized by recurrent disabling headaches and their associated features. Several studies have suggested that these features are related to headache impact, pain intensity, and psychiatric conditions. However, differences in the relationship between each associated feature and headache impact, pain intensity, or psychiatric conditions remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the impact of migraine-associated features on headache impact, pain intensity, and psychiatric conditions in patients with migraine. In this two-centered study, patients wi

Effect of galcanezumab on severity and symptoms of migraine in phase 3 trials in patients with episodic or chronic migraine.

BACKGROUND: Galcanezumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody that binds calcitonin gene-related peptide, has demonstrated a significant reduction in monthly migraine headache days compared with placebo. Here, we analyze data from 3 randomized clinical trials (2 episodic trials [EVOLVE-1, EVOLVE-2] and 1 chronic trial [REGAIN]), to examine if galcanezumab also alleviates the severity and symptoms of migraine. METHODS: The episodic migraine trials were 6-month, double-blind studies in patients with episodic migraine (4-14 monthly migraine headache days). The chronic migraine trial was a 3-month, d

Ocular pain and discomfort after advanced surface ablation: an ignored complaint.

PURPOSE: Laser vision correction is one of the most commonly performed elective surgical procedures in ophthalmology. Generally, discomfort besides pain (photophobia, burning sensation, tearing, and foreign body sensation) after these procedures is not taken into consideration in the clinical practice. The objective is to provide data on these symptoms and their relevance after advanced surface ablation (ASA). METHODS: Single-center survey study based on a structured questionnaire relative to the patients' perceived symptoms after ASA. Inclusion criteria were: ≥18 years old, no ocular disease

Evaluation of the Painful Eye.

Eye pain is a common presentation in outpatient, urgent care, and emergency settings. Causes range from benign to vision-threatening. Family physicians should promptly identify red-flag features that require urgent or emergent ophthalmology referral. A painful eye with vision loss, severe photophobia, proptosis, hyphema, or corneal ulceration is a medical emergency. Patient history should include onset, associated vision changes, contact lens use, trauma, chemical exposure, systemic symptoms, and rheumatologic disease. Physical examination should include evaluation of visual acuity (eg, using

[Dry eye and qualitative tear alteration in essential blepharospasm].

PURPOSE: We aimed to analyze the tears of patients with Benin Essential Blepharospasm (BEB) to explore possible corneo-conjunctival mechanisms for photophobia, tear deficiency and ocular pain. METHODS: Using an observational cohort of 42 patients diagnosed with BEB, we performed Schirmer's testing, measurement of tear film pH, tear film protein electrophoresis and conjunctival impression cytology. RESULTS: Schirmer's testing showed dry eye (8.4±9.7mm) with 71.3% eyes having a Schirmer's score<10mm. Surprisingly, the pH was basic (8.4±0.4) and was improved in patients receiving the standard t

Unusual presentation of phacolytic glaucoma: simulating microbial keratitis.

The differential diagnoses for phacolytic glaucoma are acute angle closure glaucoma, open angle glaucoma with uveitis, neovascular glaucoma, and glaucoma secondary to trauma. We report an unusual case where the dislocated cataractous lens firmly adherent to the corneal endothelium evoked a cellular reaction similar to phacolytic glaucoma but clinically appeared like a deep corneal abscess. The 73-year-old lady presented with severe photophobia, pain, and redness in the left eye for two months despite being on antibiotics and antifungals. Anterior chamber wash revealed a cataractous lens buried

Ocular Side Effects of Sildenafil That Persist Beyond 24 h-A Case Series.

Acute secondary effects of sildenafil, a first-line pharmacotherapy for erectile dysfunction (ED), include headache, heartburn, skin flush, and vision changes. Generally, these effects subside within 5 h. This is a retrospective report of 17 cases in which patients experienced visual disturbances following 100-mg sildenafil use that persisted for more than 24 h. All 17 patients were healthy men taking sildenafil for the first time without prescriptions who sought consultation at our clinic within 48 h of taking the drug. Diagnostic tests indicated that out of the 17 patients, nine had photopho

Incidence of Adverse Events Induced by Atropine in Myopic Children: A Meta-Analysis.

A large number of studies have evaluated the efficacy of low-dose atropine in preventing or slowing myopic progression. However, it is challenging to evaluate the ocular safety from these studies. We aimed to evaluate the incidence of adverse events induced by atropine in children with myopia. We performed a systematic literature search in several databases for studies published until November 2022. The incidence of adverse events induced by atropine was pooled by a common-effect (fixed-effect) or random-effects model. Subgroup analyses were conducted according to drug doses, types of adverse

Conjunctival autograft in pterygium treatment.

Pterygium is characterized by the thickening of the bulbar conjunctiva and the invasion of the cornea from the sclerocorneal limbus to the central portion of the cornea. Pterygium produces corneal deformation, which extends toward the central portion of the cornea. The visual disorders depend on the corneal extent. The treatment goal is the removal of the corneal and conjunctival portion of the pterygium and the coverage of the resulting conjunctival defect. The association of the pterygium surgical excision was assessed with conjunctival autograft. For this purpose, a retrospective study was
