Residual limb strength and functional performance measures in individuals with unilateral transtibial amputation.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with lower limb amputation exhibit lower residual limb strength compared to their sound limb. Deficits in residual limb knee flexion and extension strength may impact functional performance during tasks relevant to daily living. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does knee flexor and extensor strength in the residual limb impact functional outcome measures, such as walking energetics and performance metrics, in individuals with unilateral transtibial amputation? METHODS: Fourteen individuals with traumatic unilateral transtibial amputation were recruited for this observational study.

The Relation between Functional Performance, Falls and Previous Falls Among Participants in the Otago Programme: A Secondary Data Analysis.

Fall prevention is a key priority in healthcare policies. Multicomponent exercises reduce the risk of falls. The purpose of this study is to describe the relationship between functional performance and falls after following the Otago multicomponent exercise programme and previous falls. A prospective multi-centre intervention study was performed on 498 patients aged over 65 in primary care, with or without a history of previous falls. Sociodemographic, anthropometric and functionality data were collected. The primary outcome was the occurrence of falls; functional performance was measured usin

What's New in Congenital Hand Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Congenital conditions of the hand and upper extremity are a frequent source of consultation among pediatric orthopaedists and hand surgeons. Advances in the fields of molecular biology and genetics have helped to better understand some of these conditions and redefine previous classification systems. New outcome measurement tools have been used to assess surgical results and have brought into focus a different aspect of the patients' experience. METHODS: We searched PubMed database for papers related to the treatment of congenital hand anomalies published from January 1, 2015 to O

Impaired Voluntary Movement Control and Its Rehabilitation in Cerebral Palsy.

Cerebral palsy is caused by early damage to the developing brain, as the most common pediatric neurological disorder. Hemiplegia (unilateral spastic cerebral palsy) is the most common subtype, and the resulting impairments, lateralized to one body side, especially affect the upper extremity, limiting daily function. This chapter first describes the pathophysiology and mechanisms underlying impaired upper extremity control of cerebral palsy. It will be shown that the severity of impaired hand function closely relates to the integrity of the corticospinal tract innervating the affected hand. It

Conceptual model of sport-specific classification for para-athletes with intellectual impairment.

The present paper describes the conceptual basis of evidence-based classification of para-athletes with intellectual impairment (II). An extensive description of the theoretical and conceptual foundation of the system as currently conceived is provided, as are examples of its applications in the three sports included in the Paralympic programme for II-athletes in 2020 (i.e., athletics, swimming and table tennis). Evidence-based classification for II-athletes is driven by two central questions: i. How can intellectual impairment be substantiated in a valid and reliable way, and ii. Does intelle

Maturity-associated considerations for training load, injury risk, and physical performance in youth soccer: One size does not fit all.

Biological maturation can be defined as the timing and tempo of progress to achieving a mature state. The estimation of age of peak height velocity (PHV) or percentage of final estimated adult stature attainment (%EASA) is typically used to inform the training process in young athletes. In youth soccer, maturity-related changes in anthropometric and physical fitness characteristics are diverse among individuals, particularly around PHV. During this time, players are also at an increased risk of sustaining an overuse or growth-related injury. As a result, the implementation of training interven

Sex-Specific Changes in Physical Performance Following Military Training: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Men and women joining the military undergo the same training, often in mixed-sex platoons. Given the inherent physiological and physical performance differences between men and women, it is reasonable to question whether sex differences exist in the adaptation to military training and, therefore, whether sex-specific training should be employed to optimise training adaptations. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the literature evaluating changes in the physical performance of men and women following military training. METHODS: Six database sources were searched in addition to

Utility of 1 Measurement Versus Multiple Measurements of Near Point of Convergence After Concussion.

CONTEXT: Increased near point of convergence (NPC) distance is a common finding after concussion and is associated with physical symptoms and worsened neurocognitive performance. Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening measures NPC distance across 3 trials and uses the average measurement to inform clinical care. However, whether 3 trials are necessary, are consistent, or add clinical utility is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the consistency across 3 trials of NPC and establish the classification accuracy (ie, clinical utility) of 1 or 2 trials compared with the standardized average of 3 trials

Effect of tDCS Combined With Physical Training on Physical Performance in a Healthy Population.

Purpose: The effectiveness of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with physical training has shown inconsistent results through research. Hence, a study utilizing a long-term tDCS application over the primary motor cortex and a large sample size is required to determine whether tDCS combined with physical training can increase physical performance (muscular strength, endurance, and explosive strength) in healthy adults. Material and methods: Fifty-six healthy adults were randomly distributed into two groups: active (active tDCS+ physical training) and sham (sham tDCS + phys

Adults with lower-limb amputation: Reduced multifidi muscle activity and extensor muscle endurance is associated with worse physical performance.

Trunk muscles may be an overlooked region of deficits following lower-limb amputation (LLA). This study sought to determine the extent that trunk muscle deficits are associated with physical function following amputation. Sedentary adults with a unilateral transtibial- (n = 25) or transfemoral-level (n = 14) amputation were recruited for this cross-sectional research study. Participants underwent a clinical examination that included ultrasound imaging of the lumbar multifidi muscles, the modified Biering-Sorensen Endurance Test (mBSET), and performance-based measures, that is, the Timed Up and
