Perspectives: Approaches for Studying Livestock Spermatogonia.

At present, the knowledge base on characteristics and biology of spermatogonia in livestock is limited in comparison to rodents, yet the importance of studying these cells for comparative species analysis and enhancing reproductive capacity in food animals is high. Previous studies have established that although many core attributes of organ physiology and mechanisms governing essential cellular functions are conserved across eutherians, significant differences exist between mice and higher order mammals. In this chapter, we briefly discuss distinguishing aspects of testicular anatomy and the

On the surgery of the seat of the soul: the pineal gland and the history of its surgical approaches.

The pineal gland has been studied through philosophy and science for thousands of years. Its role in human physiology was not well understood until the scientific community first started to report on pineal pathology in the eighteenth century. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, reports on pineal tumors and the emergence of comparative anatomy allowed more complete understanding of pineal function. Neurosurgical methods of treating pineal pathology first emerged in the early twentieth century. In the latter half of the twentieth century, the emergence of microsurgical technique

Lymphatic Matters in Heart Disease: Systemic and Cardiac Perspectives.

The lymphatic system plays a fundamental role in cardiovascular physiology by maintaining whole-body fluid balance, facilitating immune trafficking, and enabling lipid transport. Through these functions, lymphatic performance is tightly coupled to cardiovascular health, and disturbances in lymphatic flow, pumping, or lympho-venous return can directly influence the development and progression of heart disease. This review examines the relationship between the lymphatic and cardiovascular systems with an emphasis on systemic lymphatic function and its relevance to cardiovascular pathology. We de

Translational Advances in Pediatric Nutrition and Gastroenterology: New Insights from Pig Models.

Pigs are increasingly important animals for modeling human pediatric nutrition and gastroenterology and complementing mechanistic studies in rodents. The comparative advantages in size and physiology of the neonatal pig have led to new translational and clinically relevant models of important diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver in premature infants. Studies in pigs have established the essential roles of prematurity, microbial colonization, and enteral nutrition in the pathogenesis of necrotizing enterocolitis. Studies in neonatal pigs have demonstrated the intestinal trophic effe

EST sequencing of blood-fed and Leishmania-infected midgut of Lutzomyia longipalpis, the principal visceral leishmaniasis vector in the Americas.

Leishmaniasis is an important worldwide public health problem. Visceral leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum chagasi is mainly transmitted by Lutzomyia longipalpis in the Americas. Leishmania development within the sand fly vector is mostly restricted to the midgut. Thus, a comparative analysis of blood-fed versus infected midguts may provide an invaluable insight into various aspects of sand fly immunity, physiology of blood digestion, and, more importantly, of Leishmania development. To that end, we have engaged in a study to identify expressed sequenced tags (ESTs) from L. longipalpi

Claude Bernard was a 19th century proponent of medicine based on evidence.

The French physiologist Claude Bernard (1813-1878) has the unfair reputation of being ferociously opposed to the use of probabilities and statistics in medicine. In the 19th century, he would have been included among those who opposed the emergence of what would eventually become clinical epidemiology. The truth is that Bernard valued the role of medical statistics in clinical medicine but viewed it as potentially misleading in laboratory-based physiology. He posited that clinical medicine had to be guided by probabilistic evidence as long as physiological mechanisms remained unknown. Bernard

Toward an evolutionary and syndromic psychiatry: Dogs as a comparative model for the neuroscience of psychopathology.

Psychiatric disorders arise from dysfunctions of neural systems that are deeply conserved across mammals, yet contemporary psychiatric classification remains fundamentally anthropocentric, relying heavily on subjective experience, symbolic language and self-report. This creates a major challenge for veterinarian psychiatrists and for comparative neuroscience: how can psychopathology be characterized across species when introspective access is unavailable? The domestic dog provides a uniquely powerful model for addressing this question, combining conserved affective and cognitive neural circuit

Cyanoglobule lipid droplet accumulation as a stress response to nitrogen starvation in a non-N2-fixing mutant strain of Anabaena sp. PCC 7120.

Cyanoglobules are lipid droplets of cyanobacteria that share compositional and functional features with plastoglobules of plant chloroplasts. However, their roles in stress physiology remain poorly defined, particularly in filamentous cyanobacteria. Here, we characterize cyanoglobule dynamics and composition during nitrogen starvation in a non-diazotrophic derivative of Anabaena sp. PCC 7120. This experimental context enables analysis of sustained nitrogen deprivation in vegetative cells without the transient and heterogeneous effects of heterocyst differentiation and nitrogenase activity, whi

[Age peculiar by endonasal homeostasis in humans.].

The state of protective functions of the nasal cavity determines its homeostasis. At the stages of postnatal development and involution of functional parameters by endonasal homeostasis undergo a number of specific changes, the study of which has not only scientific value but also practical value for experimental physiology and clinical medicine. The article presents data on the age dynamics of functional indicators by endonasal homeostasis of human as buffer properties and morphological features of nasal secret. These indicators are examined at the stages of postnatal development in a compara

Aortic Size Index Versus Aortic Diameter in the Prediction of Rupture in Women With Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) pose significant challenges in clinical management, particularly in female patients, whose unique anatomical and physiological characteristics influence rupture risk. While aortic diameter (AD) has traditionally been the primary metric for predicting rupture, its limitations, especially in women, have spurred exploration into alternative measures such as the aortic size index (ASI). This review examines the anatomy and physiology of AAAs in women, gender-specific challenges in diagnosis and management, and the comparative effectiveness of ASI versus AD in pred

Alternative strategies of nutrient acquisition and energy conservation map to the biogeography of marine ammonia-oxidizing archaea.

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) are among the most abundant and ubiquitous microorganisms in the ocean, exerting primary control on nitrification and nitrogen oxides emission. Although united by a common physiology of chemoautotrophic growth on ammonia, a corresponding high genomic and habitat variability suggests tremendous adaptive capacity. Here, we compared 44 diverse AOA genomes, 37 from species cultivated from samples collected across diverse geographic locations and seven assembled from metagenomic sequences from the mesopelagic to hadopelagic zones of the deep ocean. Comparative analys

Computer assisted sperm analysis of motility patterns of postthawed epididymal spermatozoa of springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis), impala (Aepyceros melampus), and blesbok (Damaliscus dorcus phillipsi) incubated under conditions supporting domestic cattle in vitro fertilization.

The need for information on the reproductive physiology of different wildlife species is important for ex situ conservation using such methods as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Information on species reproductive physiology and evaluation of sperm quality using accurate, objective, repeatable methods, such as computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) for ex situ conservation has become a priority. The aim of this study was to evaluate motility patterns of antelope epididymal spermatozoa incubated for 4 h under conditions that support bovine IVF using CASA. Cauda epididymal spermatozoa were collec

Hormones and endocrine glands of fishes. Studies of fish endocrinology reveal major physiologic and evolutionary problems.

The structures discussed above illustrate some of the evolutionary knowledge to be obtained from studies of the comparative biology of the endocrine system among the fishes (see also 17, 78). The interrenal (adrenocortical) gland is an example of an endocrine structure which shows great morphologic variation in the vertebrate series, and among the fishes themselves. The structural variability implies little selective value for any particular pattern, and, in fact, biochemically the interrenal tissue would seem to be involved in much the same kind of steroidogenesis in the vertebrates generally

Manipulation of Developmental Function in Turtles with Notes on Alligators.

Reptiles have great taxonomic diversity that is reflected in their morphology, ecology, physiology, modes of reproduction, and development. Interest in comparative and evolutionary developmental biology makes protocols for the study of reptile embryos invaluable resources. The relatively large size, seasonal breeding, and long gestation times of turtles epitomize the challenges faced by the developmental biologist. We describe protocols for the preparation of turtle embryos for ex ovo culture, electroporation, in situ hybridization, and microcomputed tomography. Because these protocols have be

Gekko japonicus genome reveals evolution of adhesive toe pads and tail regeneration.

Reptiles are the most morphologically and physiologically diverse tetrapods, and have undergone 300 million years of adaptive evolution. Within the reptilian tetrapods, geckos possess several interesting features, including the ability to regenerate autotomized tails and to climb on smooth surfaces. Here we sequence the genome of Gekko japonicus (Schlegel's Japanese Gecko) and investigate genetic elements related to its physiology. We obtain a draft G. japonicus genome sequence of 2.55 Gb and annotated 22,487 genes. Comparative genomic analysis reveals specific gene family expansions or reduct

Trophic position structures physiological trade-offs between metabolic and detoxification pathways in sympatric passerines.

Resource use links ecological context to organismal performance, yet whether dietary breadth or trophic position is more closely associated with physiological state in wild birds remains unclear. We used a natural trophic gradient in a sympatric passerine assemblage to test whether trophic position and isotopic niche breadth are associated with integrated physiological phenotypes. We studied three co-occurring passerine species in central Chile spanning a trophic spectrum (granivorous, omnivorous, insectivorous). Using blood δ 13C and δ 15N, we quantified isotopic niche width and estimated tro

What determines systemic blood flow in vertebrates?

In the 1950s, Arthur C. Guyton removed the heart from its pedestal in cardiovascular physiology by arguing that cardiac output is primarily regulated by the peripheral vasculature. This is counterintuitive, as modulating heart rate would appear to be the most obvious means of regulating cardiac output. In this Review, we visit recent and classic advances in comparative physiology in light of this concept. Although most vertebrates increase heart rate when oxygen demands rise (e.g. during activity or warming), experimental evidence suggests that this tachycardia is neither necessary nor suffici

Development of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquito larvae in high ammonia sewage in septic tanks causes alterations in ammonia excretion, ammonia transporter expression, and osmoregulation.

Larvae of the disease vector mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.) readily develop in ammonia rich sewage in the British Virgin Islands. To understand how the larvae survive in ammonia levels that are lethal to most animals, an examination of ammonia excretory physiology in larvae collected from septic-water and freshwater was carried out. A. aegypti larvae were found to be remarkably plastic in dealing with high external ammonia through the modulation of NH4+ excretion at the anal papillae, measured using the scanning ion-selective electrode technique (SIET), and NH4+ secretion in the primary urine by
