Binaural sensitivity as a function of interaural electrode position with a bilateral cochlear implant user.

Experiments were conducted with a single, bilateral cochlear implant user to examine interaural level and time-delay cues that putatively underlie the design and efficacy of bilateral implant systems. The subject's two implants were of different types but custom equipment allowed presentation of controlled bilateral stimuli, particularly those with specified interaural time difference (ITD) and interaural level difference (ILD) cues. A lateralization task was used to measure the effect of these cues on the perceived location of the sensations elicited. For trains of fixed-amplitude, biphasic c

Effect of intratympanically administered gentamicin on hearing and tinnitus in Menière's disease.

We have examined the effect of intratympanic gentamicin on hearing and tinnitus in 69 patients with intractable Menière's disease. Tinnitus was scored from 1 to 4 depending on its severity. The mean pure tone audiometry level before treatment was 57.5 dB and 1 year after treatment 63.5 dB Five subjects became deaf in the treated ear, and in 13 subjects hearing loss was > 10 dB and in 21 subjects 0 10 dB. In 25 subjects significant improvement (> 10 dB) was gained, and in 5 patients. Tinnitus was significantly reduced after treatment with gentamicin. A total of 66 patients had tinnitus before t

Acoustically Enriched Environment during the Critical Period of Postnatal Development Positively Modulates Gap Detection and Frequency Discrimination Abilities in Adult Rats.

Throughout life, sensory systems adapt to the sensory environment to provide optimal responses to relevant tasks. In the case of a developing system, sensory inputs induce changes that are permanent and detectable up to adulthood. Previously, we have shown that rearing rat pups in a complex acoustic environment (spectrally and temporally modulated sound) from postnatal day 14 (P14) to P28 permanently improves the response characteristics of neurons in the inferior colliculus and auditory cortex, influencing tonotopical arrangement, response thresholds and strength, and frequency selectivity, a

Impaired mismatch negativity (MMN) generation in schizophrenia as a function of stimulus deviance, probability, and interstimulus/interdeviant interval.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder associated with disturbances in perception and cognition. Event-related potentials (ERP) provide a mechanism for evaluating potential mechanisms underlying neurophysiological dysfunction in schizophrenia. Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a short-duration auditory cognitive ERP component that indexes operation of the auditory sensory ('echoic') memory system. Prior studies have demonstrated impaired MMN generation in schizophrenia along with deficits in auditory sensory memory performance. MMN is elicited in an auditory oddball paradigm in which a sequence

Salicylate-induced changes in auditory thresholds of adolescent and adult rats.

Shifts in auditory intensity thresholds after salicylate administration were examined in postweanling and adult pigmented rats at frequencies ranging from 1 to 35 kHz. A total of 132 subjects from both age levels were tested under two-way active avoidance or one-way active avoidance paradigms. Estimated thresholds were inferred from behavioral responses to presentations of descending and ascending series of intensities for each test frequency value. Reliable threshold estimates were found under both avoidance conditioning methods, and compared to controls, subjects at both age levels showed th

Event-related potential components N1, P2 and P3 to rare and frequent stimuli in intellectually impaired neurological patients.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) and attention performance data were collected in an auditory odd-ball paradigm from 24 intellectually impaired neurological patients, and compared with normal controls (n = 19). For the ERP components N1, P2 and P3, reference-independent measures (latency, global field power, current density at Cz, location of extreme potential, centroid location) were determined for the target stimulus and for the preceding and the following two "frequent" stimuli. In 8 of the 45 measures obtained, patients and controls differed significantly. To target stimuli, patients had sh

[Case of cortical deafness sparing the music area].

A 33-year-old woman had developed cortical deafness with profound initial deafness lasting for eleven months after pneumococcal meningitis ten years previously. CT scan demonstrated bilateral temporal lobe lesions, predominantly on the left side where it extended into the adjacent parietal and frontal lobes. Audiometry suggested integrity of the internal ear and brain stem. Early auditory evoked potentials were present, while potentials of moderate latency and delayed potentials were abolished. Neuropsychological investigations demonstrated total absence of spoken language, contrasting with co

Assessment of stimulus overselectivity with tactile compound stimuli in children with autism.

Autistic and typical children mastered a simultaneous discrimination task with three sets of all-tactile compound stimuli. During training, responding to one stimulus (S+) resulted in rewards whereas responding to the alternative (S-) was extinguished. Test 1 was conducted with recombinations of S+ and S- elements. In Test 2, the test stimulus to which the child responded most in Test 1 was pitched against the training S+. In Test 1, all children responded exclusively to one test probe, spuriously implying stimulus overselectivity in both populations. However, in Test 2, the typical children r

AI-assisted detection of high-pitched bruits in arteriovenous fistulas using a digital stethoscope.

BACKGROUND: The arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferred vascular access for patients undergoing hemodialysis, and early identification of complications such as stenosis or dysfunction is essential to preserve access patency and reduce morbidity. METHOD: AVF bruit recordings were collected from 65 patients across 12 dialysis centers in Europe and Asia using a digital stethoscope connected to the medical record of the patients. A deep learning model was developed to detect high-pitched bruits-an acoustic marker commonly associated with AVF stenosis. Expert-annotated recordings served as th

Decoding propulsive wakes using biomimetic seal whiskers.

Detecting and tracking swimming animals without disturbing them is a central need in fisheries protection and aquatic biological monitoring, yet optical and acoustic methods remain limited underwater. Passive hydrodynamic sensing offers an alternative: harbour seals can follow hydrodynamic wakes over long distances, and biomimetic whiskers respond measurably to the wakes of upstream bodies. Here we quantify how well four independently varied properties of a propulsive source can be discriminated simultaneously from a single force-instrumented whisker, using towing-tank measurements of ascaled

[Prosodic disorders in neurologic diseases--a review of the literature].

The prosodic quality of speech comprises intonation, accent pattern, and rhythm. Among others, these dimensions contribute to the linguistic structure of an utterance and subserve emotional behaviour. Both cortical and subcortical dysfunctions can give rise to impaired speech prosody. The present paper reviews the clinical and linguistic features of the various dys- and aprosodic syndromes as well as their neuroanatomic substrates. 1. Sporadically, lesions of the left hemisphere present with dysprosody in terms of a "foreign accent". In most instances this syndrome seems to be due to apraxia o

[Cognitive rehabilitation of amusia].

INTRODUCTION: The cognitive model of music processing has a modular architecture with two main pathways (a melody pathway and a time pathway) for processing the musical "message" and thus enabling music recognition. It also features a music-specific module for tonal encoding of pitch which stands apart from all other known cognitive systems (including language processing). To the best of our knowledge, rehabilitation therapy for amusia has not yet been reported. OBJECTIVE: We developed a therapeutic method (inspired by work on word deafness) in order to determine whether specific rehabilitati

Altered neuronal response during rapid auditory processing and its relation to phonological processing in prereading children at familial risk for dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a learning disability affecting 5-17% of children. Although researchers agree that DD is characterized by deficient phonological processing (PP), its cause is debated. It has been suggested that altered rapid auditory processing (RAP) may lead to deficient PP in DD and studies have shown deficient RAP in individuals with DD. Functional neuroimaging (fMRI) studies have implicated hypoactivations in left prefrontal brain regions during RAP in individuals with DD. When and how these neuronal alterations evolve remains unknown. In this article, we investigate functio

Bimodal listeners are not sensitive to interaural time differences in unmodulated low-frequency stimuli (L).

Sensitivity to interaural time differences (ITDs) with unmodulated low-frequency stimuli was assessed in bimodal listeners who had previously shown to be good performers in ITD experiments. Two types of stimuli were used: (1) an acoustic sinusoid combined with an electric transposed signal and (2) an acoustic sinusoid combined with an electric clicktrain. No or very low sensitivity to ITD was found for these stimuli, even though subjects were highly trained on the task and were intensively tested in multiple test sessions. In previous studies with users of a cochlear implant (CI) and a contral

Correlation between hearing loss and scala media area in guinea pigs with long-standing endolymphatic hydrops.

HYPOTHESIS: Histologic analysis of the hydropic and normal guinea pig cochleae was undertaken to assess a potential correlation between the magnitude of endolymphatic hydrops and hearing loss. It was hypothesized that a greater correlation than previously reported might be found by looking at long-standing endolymphatic hydrops and high-frequency range hearing. BACKGROUND: Surgically induced endolymphatic hydrops in guinea pigs is the most widely used animal model for the study of human Ménière's Disease and recapitulates both endolymphatic hydrops and progressive sensorineural hearing loss.

[Aural fullness and endolymphatic hydrops].

BACKGROUND: Low-frequency modulated DPOAEs were registrated to investigate whether the subjective symptom of aural fullness can indicate an endolymphatic hydrops. METHOD: The cochlear partition is periodically moved towards scala vestibuli and scala tympani by a low-frequency suppressor tone. The level of simultaneously registrated DPOAEs is modulated depending on the phase of the suppressor. This modulation may be reduced when the displacement of the organ of Corti is inhibited by mechanical stiffening of the basilar membrane (e. g. in endolymphatic hydrops). SUBJECTS: Low-frequency modulat

Effect of simulated bilateral cochlear distortion on speech discrimination in normal subjects.

Bilateral sensorineural hearing loss may introduce grossly dissimilar cochlear distortion at the two ears, causing abnormal demands to be made upon the cortical analytical centres which normally receive congruent information. As a result, the prescription of binaural hearing aids may be a handicap rather than a help. In order to explore this possibility, 10 normal subjects were presented with simulated, dissimilar cochlear distortion at the two ears. Discrimination scores with binaural presentation were poorer than the best monaural score and there were clear indications that in the former, su

Large-scale cortical network properties predict future sound-to-word learning success.

The human brain possesses a remarkable capacity to interpret and recall novel sounds as spoken language. These linguistic abilities arise from complex processing spanning a widely distributed cortical network and are characterized by marked individual variation. Recently, graph theoretical analysis has facilitated the exploration of how such aspects of large-scale brain functional organization may underlie cognitive performance. Brain functional networks are known to possess small-world topologies characterized by efficient global and local information transfer, but whether these properties re

The timing and temporal patterns of eye blinking are dynamically modulated by attention.

A number of human behaviors and movements show self-similar temporal patterns in their occurrence over time. Human walking, finger tapping and heartbeat intervals have fluctuations that are statistically similar at multiple time scales. However, whether eye blinking, which is a unique human behavior that occurs spontaneously, embeds a similar temporal structure within other types of movements is largely unknown. In this study, we used attention-requiring tasks to assess how the temporal pattern of eye blinking is altered in both the second and sub-second time scales. Our results showed that ey
