Most angiosperms are pollinated by animals, with insects being the most abundant and diverse pollinators. However, our knowledge about the diversity of Diptera as floral visitors and pollinators, and about their attraction to flowers, is still limited. Fly-deceptive plant species, such as Arum maculatum, are ideal model systems to explore these interactions, as their floral scents often mimic (parts of) the ecological niches associated with the dipteran life cycle (e.g., mating, breeding). In this study, we investigated the species and sex identity of lesser dung flies (Sphaeroceridae), the se

Floral nectar contains secondary compounds with antimicrobial properties that can affect not only plant-pollinator interactions, but also interactions between pollinators and their parasites. Although recent work has shown that consumption of plant secondary compounds can reduce pollinator parasite loads, little is known about the effects of dosage or compound combinations. We used the generalist pollinator Bombus impatiens and its obligate gut parasite Crithidia bombi to study the effects of nectar chemistry on host-parasite interactions. In two experiments we tested (1) whether the secondary

'Sanenashi' is a landrace of Pyrus ussuriensis var. aromatica (Iwateyamanashi) with seedless fruit originating from northern Tohoku, Japan. To determine the mechanism of seedless fruit formation, we compared the number of styles in the pistil, fruit, seed set and the pollen tube growth between 'Sanenashi' and the Japanese pear cultivar 'Kosui'. Morphological variations such as short or browning pistils were observed in 64.2% of 'Sanenashi' and 5.9% of 'Kosui'. The initial fruit set rate of 'Sanenashi' was 48.3% at 4 weeks after cross-pollination with pear, and there were no fruit sets with pea

Long-proboscid scorpionflies are enigmatic, mid-Mesozoic insects associated with gymnosperm pollination. One major lineage, Aneuretopsychina, consists of four families plus two haustellate clades, Diptera and Siphonaptera. One clade, Pseudopolycentropodidae, from mid-Cretaceous Myanmar amber, contains Parapolycentropus. Here, we newly establish Dualula, assigned to Dualulidae, constituting the fifth lineage. Parapolycentropus and Dualula lineages are small, two-winged, with unique siphonate mouthparts for imbibing pollination drops. A cibarial pump provides siphonal food inflow; in Dualula, th

One hundred and fifty-six pollen-sensitive patients with sensitization to grass pollen only were chosen for this study; 65 patients were allergic to Dermatophagoides, while 45 were non-allergic subjects with no atopic history. The following tests were carried out on all patients: histamine release of total blood, basal histamine, total histamine, determination of total IgE and specific IgE (RAST) serum levels, serum hemagglutinating antibodies and skin tests. Seasonal increase of IgE was observed, with post-seasonal fall; 50% of the cases reached normal values. However, RAST as a semiquantitat

The increasing global importance of pink peppertree (Schinus terebinthifolia, Anacardiaceae) as a high-value commercial crop and its potential for expansion in production demand appropriate management due to uncertainties regarding its sexual system. This study focused on evaluating the morphology of sterile and fertile floral whorls, as well as analyzing the sexual system of pink pepper in two populations in northeastern Brazil. The results revealed no significant differences in the morphological characteristics of the flowers between the studied areas, suggesting that the species possesses n

Floral chemical defence strategies remain under-investigated, despite the significance of flowers to plant fitness. We used cyanogenic glycosides (CNglycs)-constitutive secondary metabolites that deter herbivores by releasing hydrogen cyanide, but also play other metabolic roles-to ask whether more apparent floral tissues and those most important for fitness are more defended as predicted by optimal defence theories, and what fine-scale CNglyc localisation reveals about function(s)? Florets of eleven species from the Proteaceae family were dissected to quantitatively compare the distribution o

Commercially cultivated Prunus species are commonly grown in adjacent or mixed orchards and can be infected with unique or commonly shared viruses. Apple (Malus domestica), another member of the Rosacea and distantly related to Prunus, can share the same growing regions and common pathogens. Pollen can be a major route for virus transmission, and analysis of the pollen virome in tree fruit orchards can provide insights into these virus pathogen complexes from mixed production sites. Commercial honey bee (Apis mellifera) pollination is essential for improved fruit sets and yields in tree fruit

Habitat loss and fragmentation threaten biodiversity by reducing species richness and disrupting ecological interactions. But it is poorly understood how reduced habitat area and increased isolation impact community persistence, as measured by its capacity to maintain multispecies coexistence. We draw on an intensive, multi-year field study of mutualistic interactions in plant-frugivore and plant-pollinator networks across 41 islands in an insular fragmented landscape formed by dam construction in 1959. We show that the loss of island area after inundation is the primary driver that reduces th

The andromonoecy is an unusual sex expression in trees in which an individual plant bears both functionally staminate and hermaphrodite flowers on the inflorescences. This study aims to investigate the effect of crown layers on the floral biology and reproductive effort of Aesculus indica (Wall. ex Camb.) Hook. The results revealed that the peak period of anthesis was between 06:00 and 08:00 h of the day. Male flower production was predominantly higher as compared to the perfect flowers on the inflorescences. There was no significant variation between total pollen production in staminate and p

In many Araceae both scent and heat production are known to temporally vary throughout anthesis, and in several species strong scents are released for pollinator attraction when thermogenesis is also strong. However, it is not known whether the temporal patterns of both scent emission and temperature are strictly synchronous and, for example, reach their maxima at the same time. We studied Arum maculatum, a brood-site deceptive species attracting its moth fly pollinators with strong fetid scents, to study temporal patterns in scent emission and temperature during anthesis. Inflorescence scents

Understanding how stingless bee species share floral resources is essential for optimizing meliponiculture and supporting pollinator conservation. This study investigated the trophic niche overlap of four Melipona species (M. quadrifasciata, M. bicolor, M. torrida, and M. mondury) in Southern Brazil across warm and cold seasons. Pollen samples were collected monthly over 10 months and analyzed to assess richness, trophic niche breadth, and overlap between species' trophic niches. Results showed seasonal variation in foraging patterns, with all species (except M. mondury) reducing their niche b

Pollen tube attraction is a crucial step in the reproduction of angiosperms, ensuring that the male gametophytes, which carry two sperm cells, accurately target the compatible female gametophytes, or embryo sacs, in order to achieve double fertilization. Various experimental systems have been developed to study this process in vivo and in vitro, particularly in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis). However, fewer methods have been described for other plant species, including grasses, which generate much thicker reproductive tissues and organs. Here, we present and compare optimiz

Pathogen spread is a major driver of wild and managed bee decline, with shared floral resources often serving as transmission hubs. However, the abundance of floral resources changes throughout the season, potentially altering bee visitation rate per flower. This could affect pathogen transmission by influencing both the likelihood of pathogen deposition on flowers and of new hosts encountering pathogens. We assessed the effect of peak bloom timing on transmission of a bumble bee (Bombus impatiens Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) pathogen (Crithidia bombi Lipa & Triggiani) in a 2-wk tent experim

Because of their natural origin, biopesticides are assumed to be less harmful to beneficial insects, including bees, and therefore their use has been widely encouraged for crop protection. There is little evidence, however, to support this ingrained notion of biopesticide safety to pollinators. Because larval exposure is still largely unexplored in ecotoxicology and risk assessment on bees, an investigation was performed on the lethal and sublethal effects of a diet treated with 2 bioinsecticides, azadirachtin and spinosad, on the stingless bee, Melipona quadrifasciata, which is one of the mos

Chromosome doubling is considered an important technique in poplar breeding, with many triploid clones being artificially induced and selected for promotion in the north and northeast of China because of their outstanding traits in vegetative growth and environmental adaption. In this study, the triploid yield of Populus simonii Carr × P. nigra var. italica (Moench.) Kochne was 23.41%, which exceeded the yield attained in our previous studies due to the use of an optimized method of chromosome doubling in the embryo sac at a high temperature. The development of the embryo sac after the pollina

BACKGROUND: Gibberellins (GAs) regulate fruit set and expansion, and their endogenous levels are controlled in part through catabolic inactivation. GA2ox enzymes convert bioactive GAs into inactive forms, but the expression of GA2ox genes during cucumber fruit development has not been characterised in a tissue-resolved manner.
METHODS: Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) '9930' fruit were sampled at 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after pollination. The inner fleshy tissue (pulp) and the outer fruit wall (pericarp) were separated, and CsGA2ox2 transcript abundance was quantified by quantitative real-time

Plant-pollinator networks are increasingly threatened by rising global temperatures, yet monitoring these interactions at scale remains challenging. This study presents a digital monitoring framework that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to analyze honey bee ( Apis mellifera ) foraging on white clover ( Trifolium repens ) under normal and heat-stress conditions. The main objective was to establish a proof-of-concept for real-time, AI-driven pollinator monitoring rather than to draw definitive conclusions about the effects of heat stress on honey bee foraging beh

Hymenoptera play important ecological roles in agroecosystems as parasitoids, predators, and pollinators. This study investigated the species composition and diversity of Hymenoptera in a conventionally managed pummelo (Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.) orchard in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China, from February 2025 to February 2026. A total of 8446 specimens were collected using Malaise traps and sweep netting, belonging to 11 superfamilies, 37 families, and 191 morphospecies. The community was dominated by parasitoids (140 morphospecies, 73.30%), followed by predators (30 morphospecies, 15.7

Andromonoecy is a rare sexual system in plants. The function of additional male flowers in andromonoecious species has been widely discussed; however, few studies have taken offspring fitness into account. In addition, little is known about the mechanisms that maintain andromonoecy in autogamous species. In this study, we compared morphology, pollinator preference, pollen production and export, siring ability, natural siring success, hundred seed dry weight, and seed germination rates between male and hermaphroditic flowers in an endangered autogamous andromonoecious species, Sagittaria guayan
