The cerebellum contributes to a wide range of motor and non-motor functions through its extensive connections with much of the cerebral cortex. The pons plays a key role in these connections. It receives inputs from much of the cerebral cortex, and in turn projects to cerebellar cortex. The anatomical organization of corticopontine and pontocerebellar connectivity has been well described, but the functional organization of the pons in humans remains poorly understood. In particular, it is unclear how inputs from different areas are integrated or segregated within it. We sought to characterize

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease and might be a potential risk factor for ischemic heart disease (IHD). However, the link between periodontitis and atherosclerosis is not yet fully understood. Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is a new biomarker representing both anti-atherosclerotic and antioxidant activity, which also acts against dental biofilm formation and periodontitis. The possible contributing role of PON-1 in the relationship between periodontitis and atherosclerosis has not been studied to date.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to investigate the serum lev

BACKGROUND: Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) may play an important role in atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease and C-reactive protein is a marker for inflammation. The aim of this study was to determine serum PON-1 activity and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels and assess carotid intima-media thickness, a marker of early atherosclerotic changes, in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism.
MATERIAL/METHODS: hs-CRP concentrations and PON-1 activity with respect to carotid intima-media thickness were evaluated in 38 subclinical hypothyroidism patients (normolipide

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Aortic valve stenosis (AS) is the most common valvular heart disease in the western world, and in adults is invariably caused by the calcification of a normal tricuspid or congenital bicuspid valve. Calcific AS, as an active disease process, is characterized by lipid accumulation, inflammation and calcification that mimic atherosclerosis. Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is a high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-bound enzyme that exerts antiatherogenic properties by protecting low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol from oxidative modification. The study aim was to examine th

OBJECTIVE: Paraoxonase 1 (PON-1) is a high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-associated antioxidant enzyme that plays an important role in HDL-mediated cardioprotection. Although genetic polymorphisms are known to modulate PON-1 activity, its involvement in cardiovascular disease (CVD) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is controversial, suggesting that other factors may modulate its function. Since anti-HDL antibodies have been found to be related to an impaired lipid profile and occurrence of CVD in RA, this study was undertaken to examine the associations between PON-1 activity, anti-HDL antibodies, and

Paraoxonase (PON) is a high-density lipoprotein (HDL) associated protein which is supposed to protect low-density lipoprotein (LDL) against oxidation and to play a role in the development of atherosclerosis. Interindividual variability in serum PON activity is attributable to common variants in components of the PON gene cluster on chromosome 7. We describe experimental conditions that permit the simultaneous determination of three common PON polymorphisms (PON1-192, PON1-55 and PON2-311) that are tightly associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis. We used a multiplex PCR-based DNA a

INTRODUCTION: Open ankle dislocation fractures are one of the most severe injuries of the ankle. Development of posttraumatic arthrosis is well known. However, there are just a few case reports describing evidence of posttraumatic osteonecrosis (PON) of distal tibia. The pathophysiological mechanism remains unclear and the question of morphologic or personal risk factors cannot be answered. The goal of this study was to evaluate the morphologic characteristics of open dislocated ankle fractures in correlation with the development of PON to facilitate early identification of patients with highe

Clinical-anatomic correlations were performed in 25 patients with focal infarcts in the basilar pons to determine whether pontine lacunar syndromes conform to discrete clinical entities, and whether there is topographic organization of the motor system within the human basis pontis. Twelve clinical signs were scored on a 6-point scale, neuroimaging lesions were mapped and defined with statistical certainty, and structure-function correlation was performed to develop a topographic map of motor function. Clinical findings ranged from major devastation following extensive lesions (pure motor hemi

The paraoxonases (PONs) are a three-gene family which includes PON1, PON2, and PON3. PON1 and PON3 are synthesized primarily in the liver and a portion is secreted in the plasma, where they are associated with high-density lipoproteins (HDLs), while PON2 is an intracellular enzyme, expressed in most tissues and organs, including the brain. PON1 received its name from its ability to hydrolyze paraoxon, the active metabolite of the organophosphorus (OP) insecticide parathion, and also more efficiently hydrolyzes the active metabolites of several other OPs. PON2 and PON3 do not have OP-esterase a

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is characterized by overproduction of reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress. The antioxidant enzyme paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) may be useful for monitoring the antioxidant defence systems and the effect of treatments in OSA patients. We investigated, by means of systematic review and meta-analysis, the serum concentrations of PON-1 in OSA patients and non-OSA controls. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar databases, from the outset to November 2021, utilizing the terms: "paraoxonase" or "PON" or "paraoxonase-1"

Genetic variability of Polish Lowland Sheepdog (PON) population was evaluated using both pedigree and genomic data. The analyzed pedigree encompassed 8628 PONs, including 153 individuals genotyped on the Illumina CanineHD BeadChip. Runs of homozygosity (ROH) were defined for homozygous stretches extending over 60 to 4300 kb. The inbreeding coefficients FPed based on pedigree data and FROH50 based on ROHs were at 0.18 and 0.31. The correlation between both was 0.41 but 0.52 when excluding animals with less than seven complete generations. The realized effective population size (Ne¯) was 22.2 wi

Aggressive periodontitis (AgP), classified as Stages III or IV and grade C periodontitis, is characterized by the rapid destruction of periodontal tissue. Genetic factors contribute to the pathogenesis of this disease, and familial aggregation of periodontitis is often observed. However, the mechanisms underlying the onset or progression of AgP have not been elucidated. Previously, we performed exome sequencing and identified AgP risk factors in Japanese AgP-patients. However, the small sample size limited our scope for detecting some of the true AgP genetic risk factors. To overcome this limi

Pathological laughter and crying (PLC) has been widely documented in the medical literature in association with various pathological processes in the brainstem, particularly infarction. However, it remains poorly understood. The authors present a case report and analyze all the cases in the literature to try to localize a putative faciorespiratory center. This 13-year-old girl developed a pontine abscess subsequent to sphenoid sinusitis. This increased in size despite antibiotic treatment, and she developed PLC. The abscess was then stereotactically aspirated, with resolution of the symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Ponatinib (PON), an effective tyrosine kinase inhibitor for leukemias harboring the T315I mutation, is limited by severe cardiotoxicity, including myocardial infarction and heart failure. Here, we investigated the therapeutic potential of Bone Morphogenetic Protein-7 (BMP-7), an anti-inflammatory growth factor, in a murine model of PON-induced cardiotoxicity.
METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were distributed into experimental groups receiving PON (25 mg/kg cumulative dose) either alone or with BMP-7 (600 μg/kg cumulative dose), along with a corresponding control group. Cardiac analyses incl

OBJECTIVES: Infection remains current as an important discussion topic in the etiological factors of atherosclerosis. Ischemic-modified albumin (IMA), galectin-3 (gal-3), paraoxonase-1 (PON-1), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) are biomolecules that play an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Our aim is to investigate serum IMA, gal-3, PON-1, and MPO activity in acute brucellosis infection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients with acute brucellosis and 40 healthy individuals were included in the study. Serum IMA, gal-3, PON-1, and MPO activity were analyzed by the ELISA method.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is characterised by the presence of systemic inflammation accompanied by oxidative stress. Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is a negative acute phase reactant produced by the liver. A paraoxon-based method has been validated to measure PON-1 activity in feline serum. The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of PON-1 activity as a biomarker to discriminate FIP from other diseases with similar clinical signs. Of 159 cats enrolled, 71 were healthy, 34 had FIP and 54 had another disease but presented with clinical signs that could be consistent with FIP. PON
