Reallocating fossil subsidies via social assistance reduces poverty and preserves emissions cuts.

Fossil fuel subsidies are widespread, regressive, and environmentally costly, yet abrupt removal can raise poverty. To identify a practical reform pathway, we evaluate the effectiveness of compensatory policies grounded in existing national social protection systems. We develop a high-resolution global social accounting matrix to quantify how reallocating subsidies through actual social assistance impacts poverty, inequality, and CO2 emissions. Without compensation, reform lowers emissions but increases poverty, especially for low-income households in emerging economies. Redirecting funds via

Lung cancer disparities in rural, persistent poverty counties: a secondary data analysis.

BACKGROUND: In the US, lung cancer burden is greater in counties that are either rural or in persistent poverty. This study examined lung cancer risk (e.g., smoking), incidence, and mortality across four county types defined by cross-classification of rurality and persistent poverty. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of county characteristics and lung cancer risk, incidence and mortality. We used data from USDA to classify counties according to rurality (using rural-urban continuum codes) and persistent poverty (i.e., 20% + of residents living below the poverty line for 30 + years).

Inspecting the "health poverty trap" mechanism: self-reinforcing effect and endogenous force.

INTRODUCTION: The term "health poverty trap" describes a vicious cycle in which developing countries or regions become trapped in low levels of health and poverty during the process of modernization. Although significant progress has been made in alleviating poverty in China, there is still a need to further enhance the living conditions of its impoverished population. METHODS: This research utilizes the data of the three national representative panel surveys from 2014 to 2020. The primary objective is to gain a better understanding of the intricate relationship between health and poverty. To

Ending extreme poverty has a negligible impact on global greenhouse gas emissions.

Growing consumption is both necessary to end extreme poverty1and one of the main drivers of greenhouse gas emissions2, creating a potential tension between alleviating poverty and limiting global warming. Most poverty reduction has historically occurred because of economic growth3-6, which means that reducing poverty entails increasing not only the consumption of people living in poverty but also the consumption of people with a higher income. Here we estimate the emissions associated with the economic growth needed to alleviate extreme poverty using the international poverty line of US $2.15

Poverty, sanitation, and Leptospira transmission pathways in residents from four Brazilian slums.

Residents of urban slums suffer from a high burden of zoonotic diseases due to individual, socioeconomic, and environmental factors. We conducted a cross-sectional sero-survey in four urban slums in Salvador, Brazil, to characterize how poverty and sanitation contribute to the transmission of rat-borne leptospirosis. Sero-prevalence in the 1,318 participants ranged between 10.0 and 13.3%. We found that contact with environmental sources of contamination, rather than presence of rat reservoirs, is what leads to higher risk for residents living in areas with inadequate sanitation. Further, poore

The Interface Among Poverty, Air Mattress Industry Trends, Policy, and Infant Safety.

Infants can suffocate on air mattresses, even when the mattress is fully inflated. The interfacing issues of poverty, the bedbug epidemic, and changes in the design and marketing of air mattresses may be increasing consumer use of air mattresses as primary sleep environments and thus increasing the potential for infant death. Despite recent changes to improve air mattress safety labeling, the National Child Death Review Case Reporting System found that between 2004 and 2015 across 24 states, an air mattress was the incident sleep place for 108 infants whose deaths were either during sleep or i

Area-level poverty and preterm birth risk: a population-based multilevel analysis.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a complex disease with etiologic influences from a variety of social, environmental, hormonal, genetic, and other factors. The purpose of this study was to utilize a large population-based birth registry to estimate the independent effect of county-level poverty on preterm birth risk. To accomplish this, we used a multilevel logistic regression approach to account for multiple co-existent individual-level variables and county-level poverty rate. METHODS: Population-based study utilizing Missouri's birth certificate database (1989-1997). We conducted a multilevel l

Food-related energy consumption can help reveal poverty in rural Chinese households.

Energy consumption for cooking is important for satisfying basic needs, complementing traditional poverty measurements. Here, we propose an energy consumption-based indicator (Energy Engel Coefficient) that measures the proportion of household energy dedicated to food preparation activities relative to the total. Using a nation-wide household survey in China, we find that this indicator exhibits consistent patterns with regional and household characteristics. In addition, it more accurately reflects Engel's Law than traditional Engel Coefficient, which holds that households with lower incomes

Teenage pregnancy in South Africa: Do poverty and inequality play significant roles?

This study examined the nexus between poverty, inequality, and teenage pregnancy in South Africa from 2017 to 2023. This study used socioeconomic indicators from the World Bank and United Nations Human Development Index (HDI) to determine the prevalence of teenage pregnancy in South Africa. The results showed that human development index has a clear inverse relationship with adolescent fertility underscoring the importance of education and healthcare in reducing teenage pregnancy in the country. Similarly, Gross National Income, GNI per capita demonstrated an inverse relationship with teenage

Evaluation of Mexican poverty reduction policies under the COVID-19 pandemic impacts.

From 2019 to 2020, the Mexican economy declined for two consecutive years, especially in the last one when it was hit by a decline of 8.4% before the COVID-19 pandemic impacts which was not only one of the worst in the OECD club, but also the deepest economic recession since 1932 in the national history. At the same time, both the number of people in poverty and poverty rate in 2020 have increased compared with those registered in 2018. Through the analysis, we can find that the current Mexican government has increased the intensity and scope of the implementation of social relief policies adh

Exploring poverty: skeletal biology and documentary evidence in 19th-20th century Portugal.

BACKGROUND: The inference of the state of wealth or poverty from human skeletal remains is a difficult task, as the limited number of skeletal changes are mediated by numerous other physiological, biomechanical and pathological events. In recent years, identified skeletal collections have become valuable resources in enabling aetiologies of these changes to be understood while controlling for some known causative factors, e.g. age, sex and occupation. This has favoured more rigorous data analysis and interpretation. AIM: This study compares the presence of osteological makers of occupation -

Learning Poverty Among Disadvantaged Primary School Students in Rural Areas: A CHAID Analysis.

By the end of primary school, every student is expected to be able to read and comprehend a simple text comfortably. A 10-year-old student's inability to comprehend what they read causes them to experience learning poverty. Learning poverty is a significant problem that many students face today. The purpose of this study is to investigate the levels of learning poverty in the context of reading proficiency among disadvantaged primary school students in rural areas. The study, developed using quantitative research methods, employed a criterion sampling method. All 606 students in the study, who

Antimicrobial resistance and social inequity: Why the one health approach must centre poverty.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most consequential threats to global public health. In 2021, bacterial AMR was associated with an estimated 4.71 million deaths globally, including 1.14 million directly attributable to resistance. Yet, despite its designation as a global emergency, policy responses remain heavily focused on surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, diagnostics, and pharmaceutical innovation. These interventions are necessary but insufficient without sustained action on the social and structural conditions shaping infection exposure, access to care, and antibiotic us

Accelerating birth timing to access cash transfers? Evidence from households in extreme poverty.

There has been a sustained rise in cash transfer programs to the poor, and burgeoning interest in interventions promoting early childhood development. We draw together these trends to study whether open enrolment interventions targeting cash transfers to pregnant mothers unintentionally induce those not pregnant to accelerate birth timing in order to start receiving the cash. Our study context is rural Northern Nigeria, where households have high demand for liquidity because they are reliant on volatile earnings from agriculture, are subject to frequent natural and man-made aggregate shocks, a

Impacts of perseverative coping on depression risk among young people living in poverty.

BACKGROUND: Poverty is well-established a risk factor for depression, and Japan's relative poverty rate is higher than that of other countries. The dual-process theory of coping flexibility suggested that greater perseverative coping (i.e., continuing to employ ineffective coping strategies) leads to increased depressive symptoms. This study examines the relationship between perseverative coping and depression risk among young people living in poverty. METHODS: The participants were 1000 (500 males and 500 females) individuals living in poverty aged 18-24 years in Japan. Their socioeconomic s
