Validation of participant eligibility for pre-exposure prophylaxis: Baseline data from the PRELUDE demonstration project.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is targeted to individuals at high risk for HIV infection. We describe the HIV risk profile and characteristics of PRELUDE participants, and evaluate the population validity of the sample in representing high-risk gay and bisexual men (GBM) eligible for PrEP. METHODS: PRELUDE is an on-going, open-label, single-arm observational study. Participants were identified in clinics and screened for eligibility using a paper-based risk assessment tool which followed the New South Wales (NSW) PrEP guidelines. Selection was validated using an ind

Healthcare Provider Contact and Pre-exposure Prophylaxis in Baltimore Men Who Have Sex With Men.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) safely and effectively prevents HIV in populations at high risk, including men who have sex with men (MSM). PrEP scale-up depends upon primary care providers and community-based organizations (CBOs) sharing PrEP information. This study aimed to determine whether healthcare provider or CBO contact was associated with PrEP awareness among Baltimore MSM. METHODS: This study used 2014 Baltimore MSM National HIV Behavioral Surveillance data, which included data on health care, HIV and sexually transmitted infection testing, and receipt of condoms from

Helping our patients take HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP): a systematic review of adherence interventions.

OBJECTIVES: Adherence is critical for maximizing the effectiveness of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in preventing HIV infection. Strategies for promoting adherence to HIV treatment, and their potential application to PrEP adherence, have received considerable attention. However, adherence promotion strategies for prevention medications have not been well characterized and may be more applicable to PrEP. We aimed to identify adherence support interventions that have been effective in other prevention fields and could be applied in the HIV prevention context to support pill taking among PrEP u

mHealth interventions to increase HIV non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis uptake, adherence and linkage to pre-exposure prophylaxis services in Sub-Saharan Africa: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are effective HIV prevention methods, but their use is low in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Mobile applications (apps) could increase uptake and adherence to these interventions, yet research on their use in communities is limited. Furthermore, there is limited information on the design and development of these apps, impacting their implementation. This scoping review aims to identify, analyse and evaluate mobile apps designed to improve nPEP uptake, adherence and linkage to PrEP services focusing o

In-utero exposure to tenofovir-containing pre-exposure prophylaxis and bone mineral content in HIV-unexposed infants in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is a common drug of choice for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or as a combination HIV treatment for pregnant women. In-utero exposure to TDF was found to be associated with lower bone mineral content (BMC) in HIV-exposed uninfected neonates. Data for infants born to women taking TDF-PrEP are lacking. The CAP016 randomized control trial was conducted in South Africa between September 2017 and August 2021 and pregnant women either initiated TDF/FTC PrEP in pregnancy (Immediate PrEP arm-IP) or at cessation of breastfeeding (Deferred PrEP arm-DP).

Transition from HIV post-exposure prophylaxis to pre-exposure prophylaxis and awareness-to-use cascade among men who have sex with men: a longitudinal study in Guangxi, China.

BACKGROUND: HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are effective yet underutilized HIV prevention modalities. This study aims to evaluate the awareness-to-use cascade for PEP and PrEP, and to examine the transition from PEP to PrEP among men who have sex with men (MSM). We will discuss the rationale for using PrEP after PEP use. METHODS: With an observational, longitudinal study design, MSM were recruited from five cities in Guangxi, China. Participants completed questionnaires every 3 months and were tracked for 12 months. Descriptive statistics summarized th

Enhancing access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) through a community-based project in New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION: New Zealand has maintained a low HIV prevalence through comprehensive screening, treatment, and prevention programmes. However, challenges remain with access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for at-risk populations, particularly men who have sex with men (MSM). AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the implementation and outcomes of a community-based project that expanded PrEP access via a Standing Order authorising peer HIV testers and pharmacists to initiate short-term PrEP prior to general practitioner follow-up. METHODS: Conducted between May 2020 and July 2021, the project i

Cost-utility analysis of pre-exposure prophylaxis rabies vaccine in 5-year-old children in Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: Rabies remains a life-threatening disease affecting children in endemic regions including Thailand. The cost-effectiveness of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) rabies vaccination in the Thai context is unclear. This study analysed the cost-utility of adding PrEP rabies vaccination to post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) rabies vaccination compared with PEP alone in 5-year-old children. METHODS: A decision tree model compared eight strategies (four PEP alone and four PrEP+PEP), classified by route of administration (intradermal (ID) or intramuscular (IM)) and vaccine product (purified c

Perspectives of Primary Healthcare Workers on HIV Injectable Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP): A Scoping Review Protocol.

South Africa continues to experience a high HIV prevalence, necessitating innovative prevention strategies aligned with the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. Long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), such as cabotegravir (CAB-LA), offers a promising alternative to daily oral regimens. However, the perspectives of primary healthcare workers (PHCWs)-key implementers of this intervention-remain underexplored. This scoping review aims to systematically map existing literature on PHCWs' knowledge, awareness, perceptions, barriers, facilitators, and implementation experiences related to injecta

Generalized Treatment as Prevention Plus Focused Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Is the Key to Controlling HIV/AIDS.

Treatment as Prevention (TasP) and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) are both widely recognized as essential biomedical tools to control HIV/AIDS. TasP calls for the immediate initiation of fully subsidized and supported antiretroviral therapy (ART) following HIV diagnosis. TasP effectively prevents progression to AIDS, and premature AIDS-related deaths among people living with HIV (PLWH), and simultaneously renders HIV non-transmissible, thus preventing onward HIV transmission. In addition, PrEP has proven effective against HIV transmission among high-risk individuals who are adherent to the re

Barriers to Adolescent Pre-exposure prophylaxis and Sexual Health Care in Pediatric Versus Family Medicine Providers.

Over 7000 youth ages 13-24 are diagnosed annually with HIV-1 in the United States despite the 2018 approval of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for adolescents, highlighting the need for more research on provider prescribing practices in pediatric populations. Prior research chiefly focuses on patient barriers to accessing PrEP, and thus, our study explored provider barriers. From August to December of 2023, we conducted a survey of medical providers in pediatrics, family medicine (FM), and internal medicine (IM)/pediatrics. A 5-point Likert scale (0-4) assessed comfort in providing adoles

Barriers to HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Use Among Women in the US: A Systematic Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: The high acquisition rate of HIV infection among women in the United States is concerning. Despite the FDA approving the first pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) drug in 2012, PrEP utilization remains significantly lower among women. This literature review aims to analyze the current body of research concerning HIV PrEP usage among women in the US. METHODS: A search of three medical databases was conducted. After the screening, 19 studies were selected for analysis. A risk of bias assessment was performed. RESULTS: A final set of records meeting the inclusion criteria (n=19) was i
