Transport proteins, acute-phase reactant proteins (APRP), hematology, and anthropometry were studied in 34 sickle cell disease (SCD) children (20 boys, 14 girls) and 27 controls without growth deficits (13 boys, 14 girls) [corrected]. The age range was 1/2 to 16 1/2 years. Weight deficits (< 80%) by Waterlow's classification were observed in 41% of SCD boys and 25% of SCD girls, and height deficits (< 90%) were observed in 25% SCD boys and 25% girls. Five atopic laboratory workers with asthma and other manifestations of allergy to rats and mice were sensitive to low-molecular-weight urine proteins--an alpha2-globulin in the rat and a prealbumin in the mouse. Positive skin prick and inhalation test reactions to the urine proteins were obtained; and radioallergosorbent tests (R.A.S.T.) for specific IgE antibody were also positive. These findings show that proper control of the collection and disposal of the animals' urine is necessary to minimise the likelihood of sensitisation.

Our knowledge about the composition of the deposits in amyloidosis has increased considerably during the last decade. Three different protein groups have been shown to form fibrils in systemic amyloidosis, namely monoclonal immunoglobulin light chains in primary and myeloma-associated amyloidosis, protein AA in secondary amyloidosis and prealbumin in the familial and senile forms of systemic amyloidosis. This review deals with known and postulated pathogenetic mechanisms involved in the creation of fibrils from these proteins.

Thirteen human proteins were found in plasma and cystic fluid of mice bearing human testicular yolk sac tumor. Six of them, alpha-fetoprotein, prealbumin, albumin, alpha 1-antitrypsin, hemopexin and transferrin, had been previously demonstrated to be produced by yolk sac tumors. The syntheses of the remaining seven, namely apolipoprotein A1, retinol-binding protein, alpha 2HS-glycoprotein, haptoglobin, apolipoprotein B, C5 component and anti-hemophilic factor, have been demonstrated for the first time.

Eight cases of ocular ulcerative herpes following measles are reported. The clinical features are characterized by dendritic corneal ulcer (6 cases) and ulcero-erosive blepharitis associated with corneal ulcer (2 cases). Bacteriologic examination disclosed Pseudomonas aeruginosas in 2 cases. The serum level of retinol, RBP, prealbumin and albumin were generally diminished in cases of dendritic corneal ulcer. These data are discussed in relation to the onset and severity of ocular ulcerative herpes associated with measles.

A patient with severe hyperthyroidism (thyroid storm?) and thyroid encephalopathy is described. During her illness only a slightly raised level of total thyroxine and a normal level of total triiodothyronine was found in contrast with very high levels of free thyroid hormones. Very low levels of thyroxine binding globulin, albumin and low levels of thyroxine binding prealbumin in contrast with nearly normal values of T3 resin uptake were observed. All parameters of thyroid function returned to normal after therapy.

The preoperative serum-protein-status of 91 patients was investigated with a laboratory-screening in order to find out the patients with a malnutrition and consequently with a high risk of postoperative complications. The diagnosis was the basis for the classification in groups. There were no significant differences between values of our patients and normal values of a control group in protein, albumin, prealbumin, transferrin, cholinesterase, alpha-1-antitrypsin and haemopexin. Nutrition parameters are of limited value of preoperative risk-screening in operable lung cancer patients.

Schirmer-I test, rose bengal staining and BUT in normals, keratoconjunctivitis sicca patients and patients with Sjögren's syndrome were compared with the results of lactoferrin, lysozyme and tear-specific prealbumin assays as diagnostic procedures for lacrimal gland function. The results suggest that all three major tear proteins, originating from the tear gland can serve as sensitive markers for lacrimal gland function. In clinical practice the simple immunodiffusion assay for lactoferrin could be a reliable alternative for the traditional diagnostic tests.

A 23 year old Englishman presented with keratoconjunctivitis sicca and was found to have systemic amyloidosis.
