Sex difference in prebiotics on gut and blood-brain barrier dysfunction underlying stress-induced anxiety and depression.

BACKGROUND: Most of the previous studies have demonstrated the potential antidepressive and anxiolytic role of prebiotic supplement in male subjects, yet few have females enrolled. Herein, we explored whether prebiotics administration during chronic stress prevented depression-like and anxiety-like behavior in a sex-specific manner and the mechanism of behavioral differences caused by sex. METHODS: Female and male C57 BL/J mice on normal diet were supplemented with or without a combination of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) during 3- and 4-week chronic restrai

Polyunsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols, amino acids, prebiotics: can they help to tackle cancer cachexia and related inflammation?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent studies have highlighted the importance of developing a multimodal therapeutic strategy for cancer cachectic patients. Considering the central role of metabolism and anorexia in this disease, optimized nutritional advice should be an integral part of this strategy. Current recommendations mainly focus on meeting caloric requirements. However, a few studies suggest the great potential of foods naturally enriched in nutrients presenting interesting physiological properties and the interest of using them in the management of cachectic patients. Among them, prebiotics sho

The role of minerals in prebiotic evolution: Implications for identifying worlds with the potential for life's origin.

Understanding the origin of life requires explaining how abiotic molecules transitioned into the first living systems within plausible geological settings. Increasing evidence suggests minerals as active participants in prebiotic evolution. By adsorbing and concentrating reactants, catalyzing key reactions, stabilizing intermediates, and providing protective microenvironments, minerals may have helped to overcome thermodynamic and kinetic barriers, thereby enabling a cascade of prebiotic reactions to proceed toward the earliest life. In this review, we synthesize current experimental and theor

Strands in a Web: Free Energies of Select Prebiotic Reactions with Sugars, Nitriles and Azoles.

Using computational chemistry, we determined the free energy changes for the reactions of C2 and C3 sugars with HCN and NH2CN to form amino acids and azoles respectively. Amino acids and azoles may further react with the initial sugars to produce more complex molecules, adding to the complex web of prebiotic chemistry with its myriad species. For the reactions we have selected, our calculations provide a guide, albeit incomplete, of which pathways are thermodynamically and/or kinetically favorable and which species might be observed starting from just a handful of simple reactants. The reactio

Oxidative decarboxylation of L-alanine on hematite: Implications for prebiotic chemistry in planetary environments.

Iron oxides, such as hematite (α-Fe₂O₃), likely served as key mineral constituents in the sedimentary formations of primordial geothermal environments and planetary surfaces. This study investigates the stability and reactivity of the l-alanine/hematite system under plausible primitive environmental conditions, varying contact time (0.5 - 90 min), pH (2, 6, 9), and redox potential (oxygenic vs. anoxic atmospheres). The aqueous phase was analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Electrospray Ionization High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (ESI-HPLC-MS),

Dietary fibre responses in microbiota reveal opportunity for disease-specific prebiotic approaches.

Prebiotics or fermentable dietary fibres are known for their potential to shape the gut microbial community and could be used as a tool in treating gut dysbiotic states found in a wide range of diseases. However, it remains unclear whether the microbiota of individuals with distinct diseases respond to fibre treatments in the same way as healthy individuals do. In this study, a mechanistic understanding of fibre responses across health conditions was performed through in vitro faecal fermentations with various dietary fibres and faecal microbial communities from healthy individuals (HC) as wel

Cosmic Silicate Surfaces Catalizing Prebiotic Reactions: Atomistic Modeling on the Polymerization of HCN.

Hydrogen cyanide, HCN, is a fundamental building block in astro- and cosmochemical environments, known for its ability to form prebiotically relevant molecules such as nucleobases. Although its polymerization is inhibited under the cold, dilute conditions of the interstellar medium, the higher temperatures of more evolved rocky bodies, combined with the presence of mineral surfaces, can catalyze the reaction. In this study, we use atomistic simulations grounded on the density functional theory (DFT) to elucidate the complete tetramerization pathway of HCN to diaminomaleonitrile (DAMN) and diam

Prebiotic triose glycolysis promoted by co-catalytic proline and phosphate in neutral water.

Proline and phosphate promote a near-quantitative aldol reaction between glycolaldehyde phosphate and formaldehyde at neutral pH in water. Our results demonstrate the important role of general acid-base catalysis in water and underscore the essential role that amino acid catalysis may have played in early evolution of life's core metabolic pathways.

Fucoidan as a marine-origin prebiotic modulates the growth and antibacterial ability of Lactobacillus rhamnosus.

Fucoidan has received much attention in healthy food and biomedicine owing to their unique (bio)physicochemical properties, particularly antibacterial and antiviral. Pathogenic microorganisms and probiotics are coexisting in many tissues (e.g., gut, oral, and vagina). However, the effect of fucoidan on probiotics has not been examined. Herein, fucoidan sterilized by different methods (i.e., 0.22 μm filter and high-temperature autoclave) is applied to explore its effect on the responses of Lactobacillus rhamnosus. It is found that high-temperature autoclave treatment causes the depolymerization

Photoredox chemistry in the synthesis of 2-aminoazoles implicated in prebiotic nucleic acid synthesis.

Prebiotically plausible ferrocyanide-ferricyanide photoredox cycling oxidatively converts thiourea to cyanamide, whilst HCN is reductively homologated to intermediates which either react directly with the cyanamide giving 2-aminoazoles, or have the potential to do so upon loss of HCN from the system. Thiourea itself is produced by heating ammonium thiocyanate, a product of the reaction of HCN and hydrogen sulfide under UV irradiation.

Oligosaccharides in goats' milk-based infant formula and their prebiotic and anti-infection properties.

Human milk contains an abundant supply and diverse array of oligosaccharides that are known to impart significant health benefits to the nursing infant including establishment and maintenance of a healthy gut microflora, immune development and protection against gastrointestinal infections. When breastfeeding is not possible or insufficient, infant formulas are commonly used as an alternative. However, limited information is available about the presence of naturally occurring oligosaccharides in these infant formulas and their likely health benefits. The present study examined the presence of

Polymorphism and electronic structure of polyimine and its potential significance for prebiotic chemistry on Titan.

The chemistry of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is believed to be central to the origin of life question. Contradictions between Cassini-Huygens mission measurements of the atmosphere and the surface of Saturn's moon Titan suggest that HCN-based polymers may have formed on the surface from products of atmospheric chemistry. This makes Titan a valuable "natural laboratory" for exploring potential nonterrestrial forms of prebiotic chemistry. We have used theoretical calculations to investigate the chain conformations of polyimine (pI), a polymer identified as one major component of polymerized HCN in la
