Predicting the course of high-impact chronic pain using machine learning algorithms.

High-impact chronic pain (HICP) affects over 17 million U.S. adults and follows highly variable courses. To date, the relative importance of biopsychosocial predictors of HICP incidence, persistence, and recovery, remains poorly understood. The National Health Interview Survey Longitudinal Cohort, which comprises 10,415 adults who completed baseline surveys in 2019 and follow-back surveys in 2020, is ideally suited for addressing this critical knowledge gap. Machine learning algorithms were evaluated for their discriminatory power and classification accuracy in predicting HICP group membership

Comparative analysis of machine learning algorithms for predicting stereotactic coordinates of the centromedian nucleus.

OBJECTIVE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the centromedian nucleus (CM) of the thalamus is a promising treatment for drug-resistant epilepsy, Tourette syndrome, disorders of consciousness, and chronic pain, particularly when other surgical options are not feasible. However, the CM is challenging to visualize on routine MRI and atlas-based targeting often results in inaccurate electrode placement, affecting surgical outcomes. Furthermore, inability to visualize and directly target the CM is a barrier to CM-DBS in a resource-limited setting. The aim of this study was to develop and test machine

Leveraging ECG images for predicting ejection fraction using machine learning algorithms.

INTRODUCTION: The capability to accurately predict the ejection fraction (EF) from an electrocardiogram (ECG) holds significant and valuable clinical implications. Various algorithms based on ECG images are currently being evaluated, with most methods requiring raw signal data from ECG devices. In this study, our objective was to train and validate a neural network on a readily available ECG trace image graph to determine the presence or absence of left ventricular dysfunction (LVD). METHODS: 12-lead ECG trace images paired with their echocardiogram reports performed on the same day were sele

Development and validation of an algorithm to predict stillbirth gestational age in Medicaid billing records.

With Medicaid covering half of US pregnancies, Medicaid Analytic eXtract (MAX) provides a valuable data source to enrich understanding about stillbirth etiologies. We developed and validated a claims-based algorithm to predict gestational age (GA) at stillbirth. We linked the stillbirths identified in MAX 1999-2013 to Florida fetal death records (FDRs) to obtain clinical estimates of GA (n = 825). We tested several algorithms, including using a fixed median GA, median GA at the time of specific prenatal screening tests, and expanded versions considering additional predictors of stillbirth, inc

Predictive modeling of breast cancer-related lymphedema using machine learning algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is one of the common complications after breast cancer surgery. It can easily lead to limb swelling, deformation and upper limb dysfunction, which has a serious impact on the physical and mental health and quality of life of patients. Previous studies have mostly used statistical methods such as linear regression and logistic regression to analyze the influencing factors, but all of them have certain limitations. Machine learning (ML) is an important branch of artificial intelligence, which can effectively overcome the problems of multivariat

Predicting Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Tobacco Users Using Machine Learning Algorithms.

Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) present a substantial global health burden, with tobacco use as a major risk factor. While extensive research has identified several risk factors for CVDs, there is a gap in predictive models that account for a combination of clinical factors, lifestyle factors, and other determinants in order to predict CVD risk. In addition, existing studies tend to overlook the interactions among risk factors within high-risk populations, such as tobacco users. In this study, we examined phenotype data from over 15,000 tobacco users from the UK Biobank dataset to investigate w

Comparison of machine learning algorithms for predicting cognitive impairment using neuropsychological tests.

OBJECTIVES: Neuropsychological tests (NPTs) are standard tools for assessing cognitive function. These tools can evaluate the cognitive status of a subject, which can be time-consuming and expensive for interpretation. Therefore, this paper aimed to optimize the systematic NPTs by machine learning and develop new classification models for differentiating healthy controls (HC), mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD) among groups of subjects. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total dataset of 14,926 subjects was obtained from the formal 46 NPTs based on the Seoul Neuropsycholog

Recent advances in algorithms predicting hemodynamic instability undergoing surgery for phaeochromocytoma and paraganglioma.

Abdominal pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) are characterized by the overproduction of catecholamines, which are associated with hemodynamic instability (HDI) during surgery. Therefore, perioperative management to prevent intraoperative HDI is imperative for the surgical treatment of PPGLs. Owing to the rarity and heterogeneous nature of these tumors, pre-surgical prediction of HDI is a clinical dilemma. The reported risk factors for HDI include perioperative preparation, genetic background, tumor conditions, body composition, catecholamine levels, and surgical approach. Additionall

CNN for a Regression Machine Learning Algorithm for Predicting Cognitive Impairment Using qEEG.

PURPOSE: Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals give detailed information on the electrical brain activities occurring in the cerebral cortex. They are used to study brain-related disorders such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Brain signals obtained using an EEG machine can be a neurophysiological biomarker for early diagnosis of dementia through quantitative EEG (qEEG) analysis. This paper proposes a machine learning methodology to detect MCI and AD from qEEG time-frequency (TF) images of the subjects in an eyes-closed resting state (ECR). PARTICIPANTS AND METHOD

Dengue transmission dynamics prediction by combining metapopulation networks and Kalman filter algorithm.

Predicting the specific magnitude and the temporal peak of the epidemic of individual local outbreaks is critical for infectious disease control. Previous studies have indicated that significant differences in spatial transmission and epidemic magnitude of dengue were influenced by multiple factors, such as mosquito population density, climatic conditions, and population movement patterns. However, there is a lack of studies that combine the above factors to explain their complex nonlinear relationships in dengue transmission and generate accurate predictions. Therefore, to study the complex s
