Anti-Alpha-Gal Antibodies Against Gangliosides: Preliminary Data on a New Autoimmune Target in Alzheimer's Disease Patients.

Human anti-αGal antibodies (Abs), known for their marked polyreactivity, have been detected bound to the gray matter of the brains of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, although their targets were unclear. Since αGal is a strictly xenogenic antigen absent in humans, this observation raised questions regarding the nature of the structures recognized by these antibodies. In this study, we investigated their potential interaction with gangliosides-glycan structures that are highly abundant in the central nervous system. Using a competitive inhibition ELISA, serum profiles of anti-αGal Abs isotype

Cytokine patterns in very low birth weight infants under different cord clamping strategies: preliminary EXPLAIN trial data.

BACKGROUND: Delayed umbilical cord clamping (DCC) improves survival and hematologic outcomes in preterm infants. Strategies that provide initial respiratory support before cord clamping may prolong intact placental circulation beyond standard time-based DCC in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. Whether prolonged intact placental circulation modifies neonatal cytokine patterns remains unclear. METHODS: This pre-specified secondary analysis of a single-center randomized controlled trial (Extrauterine Placental Transfusion in Resuscitation of VLBW Infants [EXPLAIN]) included preterm infants w

Preliminary Data From a Geriatrician-Led Program for Orthopedic Co-Managed Hip Fracture Patients Using Zoledronic Acid.

BACKGROUND: Hip fractures are increasing as the U.S. population ages and result in significant morbidity, mortality, and cost. Despite guidelines recommending osteoporosis treatment after hip fracture, few patients receive treatment. To address this unmet need, our large, tertiary care, academic hospital initiated an inpatient osteoporosis treatment program with Zoledronic Acid (ZA) led by a single geriatrician co-managing patients with hip fracture admitted to the orthopedic trauma service. This study describes the program's implementation and preliminary data. METHODS: A prospective cohort

Lumbar Sitting Behavior of Individuals with Low Back Pain: A Preliminary Study Using Extended Real-World Data.

Low back pain affects 619 million people worldwide and is commonly provoked by sitting. Current assessment methods constrain task variability, removing real-world, task-switching behaviors. This study utilized accelerometers to provide an original validated method of in vivo real-world assessment of lumbar sitting behavior throughout a full day. A three-stage study design was used, which involved (1) blinded verification of our sitting detection algorithm, (2) full-day data collection from participants with low back discomfort, quantifying lumbar angles, and end-user acceptability explored, (3

Preliminary application of three-dimensional printing in congenital uterine anomalies based on three-dimensional transvaginal ultrasonographic data.

BACKGROUND: The three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has remarkable potential as an auxiliary tool for representing anatomical structures, facilitating diagnosis and therapy, and enhancing training and teaching in the medical field. As the most available diagnostic tool and it is routinely used as the first approach in diagnosis of the uterine anomalies, 3D transvaginal ultrasonography (3D-TVS) has been proposed as non-invasive "gold standard" approach for these malformations due to high diagnostic accuracy. Despite holding promise of manufacturing 3D printed models based on 3D-TVS data,

Auxological, ophthalmological, neurological and MRI findings in 25 Austrian patients with septo-optic dysplasia (SOD). Preliminary data.

UNLABELLED: Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) comprises ophthalmological, endocrinological and neurological disorders resulting from varying degrees of midline malformation of the forebrain like visual impairment by optic nerve hypoplasia, endocrine deficits due to hypothalamic and/or pituitary anomalies, and psychomental retardation by associated cortical malformation. MRI shows aplasia/hypoplasia of the septum pellucidum and corpus callosum as a radiological hallmark. For etiology, genetic defects (Hesx1/HESX1 gene) as well as vascular disruption during embryonic brain development are discussed.

A dimensional approach to hypersomnolence disorder without comorbidity: results from a French preliminary study and data visualization.

CONTEXT: The hypersomnolence disorder diagnostic criteria of the DSM-5-TR rely on the report of a 'hypersomnolence' syndrome, without defining the term or proposing any measuring tool to assess this. Among the vast diversity of tools to measure hypersomnolence, the Hypersomnia Severity Index (HSI) has been specifically designed to account for the multidimensionality of hypersomnolence. Showing good psychometric validity in two previous validation studies, the HSI has never been validated against the gold-standard Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT). OBJECTIVE: This preliminary study aims to va

Preliminary Metabolomics Data Reveals Lipid Metabolism and Oxidative Stress Metabolites as Potential Biomarkers for Patent Ductus Arteriosus.

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a common congenital heart defect in preterm infants and is associated with significant morbidity. Early diagnosis is crucial but challenging due to nonspecific clinical symptoms. This study aims to identify potential metabolomic biomarkers for early detection of PDA using human cord blood. A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted involving 45 preterm infants between 230/6 and 316/7 weeks of gestation. The diagnosis of hemodynamically significant PDA (hsPDA) was based on echocardiographic findings after 48 h, showing a left atrium-to-aortic root ratio

AI Model Integrating Imaging and Clinical Data for Predicting CSF Diversion in Neonatal Hydrocephalus: A Preliminary Study.

Predictive tools for stratifying neonatal hydrocephalus into low- and high-risk groups for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion are currently lacking. We developed and validated an artificial intelligence (AI) model that integrates multimodal imaging and clinical data to predict CSF diversion needs. The development cohort included 116 neonates with suspicion of raised intracranial pressure (ICP) from a Chinese tertiary referral hospital (80 with intracranial pressure > 80 mm H2O, 36 with intracranial pressure ≤ 80 mm H2O). The external validation cohort consisted of 21 neonates with hydrocephal

Artificial intelligence and radiation effects on brain tissue in glioblastoma patient: preliminary data using a quantitative tool.

PURPOSE: The quantification of radiotherapy (RT)-induced functional and morphological brain alterations is fundamental to guide therapeutic decisions in patients with brain tumors. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows to define structural RT-brain changes, but it is unable to evaluate early injuries and to objectively quantify the volume tissue loss. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools extract accurate measurements that permit an objective brain different region quantification. In this study, we assessed the consistency between an AI software (Quibim Precision® 2.9) and qualitative nerur
