A functional MRI case study of acquired cerebral dyschromatopsia.

Evidence from imaging studies suggests that primary visual cortex and multiple areas in ventral occipitotemporal cortex subserve color perception in humans. To learn more about the organization of these areas, we used structural and functional MRI (fMRI) to examine a patient with damage to ventral cortex. An art professor, KG, suffered a cerebrovascular accident during heart surgery that impaired his ability to perceive color. The Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue test was used to assess the extent of his deficit. When tested 12 months after the lesion, KG performed worse than 95% of age-matched norm

Visual cortex activation to drug cues: a meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging papers in addiction and substance abuse literature.

BACKGROUND: Although the visual cortex does not typically receive much attention in addiction literature, neuroimaging studies often report significant activity in visual areas when drug users are exposed to drug cues. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate the frequency with which occipital cortex activity is observed during drug cue exposure and to determine its spatial distribution. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed of human functional neuroimaging studies of drug cue-reactivity. Fifty-five studies were used to determine the frequency with which cluster

Characteristics of cross-modal negative BOLD responses in the human sensory subcortex and cortex.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a noninvasive method for measuring human brain activity based on blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) responses. Although many studies have reported positive BOLD responses evoked by sensory stimuli, others have reported negative BOLD responses (NBRs) in the sensory cortex when stimuli from different sensory modalities are presented (i.e., cross-modal NBRs). We conducted an fMRI experiment to better understand the characteristics of cross-modal NBRs in subcortical and cortical regions. Auditory and visual stimuli were presented unilaterally t

Vividness of visual imagery questionnaire scores and their relationship to visual short-term memory performance.

Mechanisms underlying visual imagery, the ability to create vivid mental representations of a scene in the absence of sensory input, remain to be fully understood. Some previous studies have proposed that visual imagery might be related to visual short-term memory (STM), with a common mechanism involving retention of visual information over short periods of time. Other observations have shown a strong relationship between visual imagery and functional activity in the hippocampus and primary visual cortex, both regions also associated with visual STM. Here we examined the relationship of visual

Age-related gene expression change of GABAergic system in visual cortex of rhesus macaque.

Degradation of visual function is a common phenomenon during aging and likely mediated by change in the impaired central visual pathway. Treatment with GABA or its agonist could recover the ability of visual neurons in the primary visual cortex of senescent macaques. However, little is known about how GABAergic system change is related to the aged degradation of visual function in nonhuman primate. With the use of quantitative PCR method, we measured the expression change of 24 GABA related genes in the primary visual cortex (Brodmann's 17) of different age groups. In this study, both of mRNA

V1 connections reveal a series of elongated higher visual areas in the California ground squirrel, Otospermophilus beecheyi.

For studies of visual cortex organization, mouse is becoming an increasingly more often used model. In addition to its genetic tractability, the relatively small area of cortical surface devoted to visual processing simplifies efforts in relating the structure of visual cortex to visual function. However, the nature of this compact organization can make some comparisons to the much larger non-human primate visual cortex difficult. The squirrel, as a highly visual rodent offers a useful means for better understanding how mouse and monkey cortical organization compares. More in line with primate

Laminar processing of numerosity supports a canonical cortical microcircuit in human parietal cortex.

As neural signals travel through the visual hierarchy, spatial precision decreases and specificity for stimulus features increases.1-4 A similar hierarchy has been found for laminar processing in V1, where information from the thalamus predominantly targets the central layers, while spatial precision decreases and feature specificity increases toward superficial and deeper layers.5-17 This laminar processing scheme is proposed to represent a canonical cortical microcircuit that is similar across the cortex.11,18-21 Here, we go beyond early visual cortex and investigate whether processing of nu

Hemodynamic responses related to intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells in migraine.

To clarify whether photoreception of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) is related to migraine, we investigated the relationship between hemodynamic responses related to neural activity and visual stimulation of ipRGCs. It has been established that photoreception in ipRGCs is associated with photophobia in migraine. However, the relationship between visual stimulation of ipRGCs and hemodynamic responses in the visual cortex has not been clarified. Hemodynamic responses in the visual cortex were measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) as signals re

Seeing visual hallucinations with functional magnetic resonance imaging.

We have used blood oxygenation level dependent imaging with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the visual cortex response to photic stimulation during and in the absence of continuous visual hallucinations. A patient with cortical Lewy body dementia who experienced persistent and vivid complex hallucinations underwent fMRI on and off treatment with risperidone. When he was not hallucinating, photic stimulation produced a normal bilateral activation in striate cortex. During hallucinations, very limited activation in striate cortex could be induced. We interpret this re

Separate neural pathways for the visual analysis of object shape in perception and prehension.

BACKGROUND: Earlier work with neurological patients has shown that the visual perception of object size and orientation depends on visual pathways in the cerebral cortex that are separate from those mediating the use of these same object properties in the control of goal-directed grasping. We present evidence suggesting that the same dissociation between perception and action is evident in the visual processing of object shape. In other words, discrimination between objects on the basis of their shape appears to be mediated by visual mechanisms that are functionally and neurally distinct from

Top-down influence affects the response adaptation of V1 neurons in cats.

The visual system lowers its perceptual sensitivity to a prolonged presentation of the same visual signal. This brain plasticity, called visual adaptation, is generally attributed to the response adaptation of neurons in the visual cortex. Although well-studied in the neurons of the primary visual cortex (V1), the contribution of high-level visual cortical regions to the response adaptation of V1 neurons is unclear. In the present study, we measured the response adaptation strength of V1 neurons before and after the top-down influence of the area 21a (A21a), a higher-order visual cortex homolo

Lesion location influences perception of homonymous scotomata during flickering random dot pattern stimulation.

An attempt was made to clarify whether the site of postchiasmal lesions affects subjective perception of homonymous visual field defects during stimulation with flickering random dot patterns (white noise-field). Out of 56 patients with homonymous hemianopia, 38 (68%) perceived scotomata in this situation, but 18 (32%) discerned none at all. Neuroradiologic superposition of cerebral lesions detected by computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed that nearly all patients who perceived their scotomata had lesions involving the primary visual cortex or the perigeniculate r

Nucleus basalis-enabled stimulus-specific plasticity in the visual cortex is mediated by astrocytes.

Although cholinergic innervation of the cortex by the nucleus basalis (NB) is known to modulate cortical neuronal responses and instruct cortical plasticity, little is known about the underlying cellular mechanisms. Using cell-attached recordings in vivo, we demonstrate that electrical stimulation of the NB, paired with visual stimulation, can induce significant potentiation of visual responses in excitatory neurons of the primary visual cortex in mice. We further show with in vivo two-photon calcium imaging, ex vivo calcium imaging, and whole-cell recordings that this pairing-induced potentia

Impairment of depth perception in multiple sclerosis is improved by treatment with AC pulsed electromagnetic fields.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with postural instability and an increased risk of falling which is facilitated by a variety of factors including diminished visual acuity, diplopia, ataxia, apraxia of gait, and peripheral neuropathy. Deficient binocular depth perception may also contribute to a higher incidence of postural instability and falling in these patients who, for example, find it an extremely difficult task to walk on uneven ground, over curbs, or up and down steps. I report a 51 year old woman with secondary progressive MS who experienced difficulties with binocular depth perc

Exploration of the cortical pathophysiology underlying visual disturbances in schizophrenia comorbid with depressive disorder-An evidence from mouse model.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with schizophrenia frequently present with visual disturbances including hallucination, and this symptom is particularly prevalent in individuals with comorbid depressive disorders. Currently, little is known about the neurobiological mechanisms of such psychiatric symptoms, and few explanations for the co-occurrence of schizophrenia, depression, and visual disturbances are available. METHODS: In this study, we generated a mouse schizophrenia model in which depressive symptoms were also induced. We adopted in vivo two-photon calcium imaging and ex vivo electrophysiologi

Combined three-dimensional anisotropy contrast imaging and magnetoencephalography guidance to preserve visual function in a patient with an occipital lobe tumor.

OBJECTIVE: Three-dimensional anisotropy contrast (3-DAC) magnetic resonance imaging and magnetoencephalography (MEG) of visually evoked magnetic fields (VEFs) were used to accurately localize the optic radiation and primary visual cortex before surgery for an occipital tumor. PATIENT AND METHODS: A 26-year-old male presented with an occipital lobe tumor located intrinsically underneath the right calcarine fissure. 3-DAC imaging showed that the right optic radiation was located along the superior and lateral surfaces of the lesion. Mapping of the VEFs demonstrated that the primary visual corte

Altered functional connectivity after pilocarpine-induced seizures revealed by intrinsic optical signals imaging in awake mice.

SIGNIFICANCE: Comorbidities such as mood and cognitive disorders are often found in individuals with epilepsy after seizures. Cortex processes sensory, motor, and cognitive information. Brain circuit changes can be studied by observing functional network changes in epileptic mice's cortex. AIM: The cortex is easily accessible for non-invasive brain imaging and electroencephalogram recording (EEG). However, the impact of seizures on cortical activity and functional connectivity has been rarely studied in vivo. APPROACH: Intrinsic optical signal and EEG were used to monitor cortical activity i

Enhanced cortical excitability in grapheme-color synesthesia and its modulation.

Synesthesia is an unusual condition characterized by the over-binding of two or more features and the concomitant automatic and conscious experience of atypical, ancillary images or perceptions. Previous research suggests that synesthetes display enhanced modality-specific perceptual processing, but it remains unclear whether enhanced processing contributes to conscious awareness of color photisms. In three experiments, we investigated whether grapheme-color synesthesia is characterized by enhanced cortical excitability in primary visual cortex and the role played by this hyperexcitability in

Correlation of vision loss with tactile-evoked V1 responses in retinitis pigmentosa.

Neuroimaging studies have shown that the visual cortex of visually impaired humans is active during tactile tasks. We sought to determine if this cross-modal activation in the primary visual cortex is correlated with vision loss in individuals with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), an inherited degenerative photoreceptor disease that progressively diminishes vision later in life. RP and sighted subjects completed three tactile tasks: a symmetry discrimination task, a Braille-dot counting task, and a sandpaper roughness discrimination task. We measured tactile-evoked blood oxygenation level dependent

Immature cortex lesions alter retinotopic maps and interhemispheric connections.

Unilateral lesions of the occipital visual areas performed on postnatal day 5 (P5) in the ferret are not compensated by the appearance, in the lesioned hemisphere, of visual responses at ectopic locations. Instead, when parts of the visual areas are spared, they show abnormal retinotopic organizations; furthermore, callosal connections are abnormally distributed in relation to the retinotopic maps. Lesions that completely eliminate the visual areas including the posterior parietal cortex cause the appearance of abnormal callosal connections from the primary somatosensory cortex on the lesion s
