Clustering knowledge and dispersing abilities enhances collective problem solving in a network.

Diversity tends to generate more and better ideas in social settings, ranging in scale from small-deliberative groups to tech-clusters and cities. Implicit in this research is that there are knowledge-generating benefits from diversity that comes from mixing different individuals, ideas, and perspectives. Here, we utilize agent-based modeling to examine the emergent outcomes resulting from the manipulation of how diversity is distributed and how knowledge is generated within communicative social structures. In the context of problem solving, we focus on cognitive diversity and its two forms: a

Neural correlates of autobiographical problem-solving deficits associated with rumination in depression.

BACKGROUND: Analytical rumination can be characterized as negative thoughts focused on searching for answers to personal problems. Failure to think concretely during autobiographical problem-solving (APS) is hypothesized to drive the inability of ruminators to generate effective solutions. Clarifying the brain correlates underlying APS deficits in depressed ruminators may identify novel biological targets for treatment. METHOD: Forty participants (22 unmedicated depressed and 18 never-depressed adults) ranging in rumination engaged in APS and negative self-referential processing (NSP) of nega

Longitudinal mediators of social problem solving in spina bifida and typical development.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined the role of early executive functions (EF) and social language (SL) as well as responsive parenting as mediators of the effect of group on social problem-solving skills at 7 years of age for children with spina bifida and typically developing children. METHOD: A mediation analysis was used to determine if the effect of having spina bifida on school age social problem-solving skills was mediated through the effect of group on EF/SL at 3 years of age and responsive parenting at 12 and 18 months. As part of a larger longitudinal study, 103 infants (n = 49 wi

Fluid intelligence and psychosocial outcome: from logical problem solving to social adaptation.

BACKGROUND: While fluid intelligence has proved to be central to executive functioning, logical reasoning and other frontal functions, the role of this ability in psychosocial adaptation has not been well characterized. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A random-probabilistic sample of 2370 secondary school students completed measures of fluid intelligence (Raven's Progressive Matrices, RPM) and several measures of psychological adaptation: bullying (Delaware Bullying Questionnaire), domestic abuse of adolescents (Conflict Tactic Scale), drug intake (ONUDD), self-esteem (Rosenberg's Self Esteem

Deficits in social problem solving in adolescents with prenatal exposure to alcohol.

This study evaluated the social problem solving skills of adolescents with histories of prenatal alcohol exposure. Adolescents (28 alcohol-exposed, 15 controls) completed a standardized questionnaire of social problem solving, and caregivers completed a parent-report measure of executive functioning. Both questionnaires were mailed to families, and caregivers were asked to recruit a non-exposed control. Results suggest that alcohol-exposed adolescents have substantial impairments in their abilities to solve problems in their everyday life, even in the absence of mental retardation. Such impair

Frontal lobe dysfunction and everyday problem-solving: social and non-social contributions.

Everyday problem-solving involves both non-social executive processes, social and emotional processes, and draws upon social and practical knowledge. A series of studies including both adult-acquired lesions and neurodevelopmental disorders is reviewed examining problem-solving on a real-life-type task that involves generating a range of solutions to brief problem scenarios and selecting preferred solutions to solve the problems. Impairments in problem-solving are described in groups of participants with left anterior frontal lobe lesions, Tourette's syndrome and Asperger's syndrome. By contra

Cross-cultural comparison of interpersonal problem-solving in students with mental retardation.

This study was conducted to investigate the problem-solving performance, style, and cross-cultural differences of students with mild mental retardation representing three cultural backgrounds (African American, European American, and Nigerian). Students listened to vignettes (Edeh Scale of Interpersonal Problem Situations) depicting interpersonal problem situations in which a target person was described as facing a problem situation with a specified goal that needed independent resolution. Significant cultural differences were found in problem-solving performance and in style among the three c

Effects of self-focused rumination on negative thinking and interpersonal problem solving.

Hypotheses about the effects of self-focused rumination on interpretations of events and interpersonal problem solving were tested in 3 studies with dysphoric and nondysphoric participants. Study 1 supported the hypothesis that dysphoric participants induced to ruminatively self-focus on their feelings and personal characteristics would endorse more negative, biased interpretations of hypothetical situations than dysphoric participants induced to distract themselves from their mood, or nondysphoric participants. Study 2 showed that dysphoric participants who ruminated were more pessimistic abo

Interpersonal problem-solving skills training in the treatment of self-poisoning patients.

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of interpersonal problem-solving skills training (IPSST) for the treatment of self-poisoning patients. Thirty-nine self-poisoning patients were assigned randomly either to IPSST or to a control treatment condition (a brief problem-oriented approach). Both conditions were equally effective in reducing the number of presenting problems and in reducing hopelessness levels. However, the IPSST condition was significantly more effective than the control condition as determined by other outcome measures (measures of interpersonal cognitive problem solving

Negative capability as a factor of problem-solving within the psychotherapeutic process.

It is proposed that negative capability, that is, the capacity for tolerating uncertainty, doubt and not-knowing, is a factor that contributes to a problem-solving approach utilizable in some aspects of the psychotherapeutic process. Negative capability can be demonstrated both in therapists and patients. An analysis of the functions of negative capability within the psychotherapeutic process shows five stages in its utilization. These are the activation of therapist's negative capability; which is followed by observations about the patient's response to his perception of the therapist's negat

The relationship between problem-solving appraisal and internalizing disorders: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Problem-solving appraisal is an important cognitive process that influences how individuals manage and cope with stress. Negative appraisals of problem-solving ability are associated with adverse mental health outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis using a random-effects model to synthesize the relationship between problem-solving appraisal and internalizing disorders. In addition, we examined the potential moderating role of age in this relationship and conducted subgroup analyses. To account for effect size dependencies, we used robust variance estimation (RVE). We exam

Propagation and preservation of AI-discovered problem-solving strategies in human culture.

Intelligent machines have the potential to uncover problem-solving strategies beyond human discovery. Emerging evidence from competitive gameplay, such as Go and chess, demonstrates that AI systems are evolving from mere tools to sources of cultural innovation adopted by humans. However, the conditions under which intelligent machines transition from tools to drivers of persistent cultural change remain unclear. We identify three key dimensions that modulate machine influence on human problem-solving: the discovered strategies must be non-trivial, learnable, and offer a clear advantage. Using

Solving the B-SAT Problem Using Quantum Computing: Smaller Is Sometimes Better.

This paper aims to outline the effectiveness of modern universal gate quantum computers when utilizing different configurations to solve the B-SAT (Boolean satisfiability) problem. The quantum computing experiments were performed using Grover's search algorithm to find a valid solution. The experiments were performed under different variations to demonstrate their effects on the results. Changing the number of shots, qubit mapping, and using a different quantum processor were all among the experimental variables. The study also branched into a dedicated experiment highlighting a peculiar behav

Social problem solving as a mediator of stress and chronic prostatitis symptomology.

Social problem solving (SPS), the process by which individuals attempt to cope with stressful life problems, has previously been found to mediate the relationship between stress and disorder-related symptomatology among several medical patient populations. The present study sought to identify a similar relationship among a sample of 63 men diagnosed with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). Results found that SPS mediated the relationship between two different measures of stress and CP/CPPS symptoms. These results suggest that attempts to foster patients' SPS efficacy ma

Newly walking infants' night sleep impacts next day learning and problem solving.

Sleep is part of the process that prepares children and adults for next day cognitive activity. Insufficient or fragmented sleep has a detrimental impact on subsequent encoding (Rouleau et al., 2002) and cognitive functioning (Joo et al., 2012). However, fragmented sleep early in life is a developmental norm, limiting the extent to which conclusions derived from older populations can be generalized. To directly test the continuity of this relationship, newly-walking infants' (N=58) sleep was monitored overnight using actigraphy. The next morning they were taught a motor problem-solving task. T

Clinical Problem Solving: An Older Woman With Weakness from Head to Toe.

A 67-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for progressive weakness, dysphagia, muscle pain, and weight loss. Here we detail the clinical problem solving involved in diagnosing and treating her immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy caused by anti-HMGCoA reductase autoantibodies. Interestingly, this diagnosis coincided with discovery of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and positivity for anti-nuclear matrix protein (anti-NXP2), another myositis specific autoantibody.

Pediatric Mediastinal Masses:: Role of MR Imaging as a Problem-Solving Tool.

Computed tomography (CT) is the imaging modality of choice for evaluating mediastinal masses detected by radiography or clinical presentation. However, CT results can often be indeterminate. Thoracic magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a noninvasive way to characterize mediastinal lesions, site of origin, and involvement of adjacent structures by providing higher soft tissue contrast than CT, with superior tissue characterization and higher diagnostic specificity. Thoracic MR imaging of mediastinal masses can increase diagnostic certainty, reduce the number of surgical interventions, and improv

Role of the Internet in Solving the Last Mile Problem in Medicine.

Internet-augmented medicine has a strong role to play in ensuring that all populations benefit equally from discoveries in the medical sciences. Yet, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collected from 1999 to 2014 suggested that during the first phase of internet diffusion, progress against mortality has stalled, and in some cases, receded in rural areas that are traditionally underserved by medical and broadband resources. This problem of failing to extend the benefits of extant medical knowledge equitably to all populations regardless of geography can be framed as the "l
