Peripheral blood heat shock protein 27 correlates with information processing speed and executive function, potentially serving as a marker for mild cognitive impairment in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous study found that interleukin 1β (IL-1β) is associated with diabetic cognitive dysfunction. Heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) is one of the factors related to IL-1β associated inflammation. Here, we aim to investigate the role of HSP27 in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, individuals with T2DM with and without MCI were recruited and categorized into Control and MCI groups. Plasma HSP27 levels were assessed and compared between the Control and MCI groups. Furthermore, the relationship

Speeding up the solar water disinfection process (SODIS) against Cryptosporidium parvum by using 2.5l static solar reactors fitted with compound parabolic concentrators (CPCs).

Water samples of 0, 5, and 100 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) spiked with Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts were exposed to natural sunlight in 2.5l static borosilicate solar reactors fitted with two different compound parabolic concentrators (CPCs), CPC1 and CPC1.89, with concentration factors of the solar radiation of 1 and 1.89, respectively. The global oocyst viability was calculated by the evaluation of the inclusion/exclusion of the fluorogenic vital dye propidium iodide and the spontaneous excystation. Thus, the initial global oocyst viability of the C. parvum isolate used was 95.3 ±

The Effect of Topical Anesthesia on the Phonation Process During High-Speed Digital Imaging Laryngoscopy in Patients with Laryngopharyngeal Reflux: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Crossover Trial.

Background and Objectives: High-speed digital imaging (HSDI) is the most advanced method of phonation process analysis. Hoarseness is the most common indication for HSDI, and laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is an etiological cofactor of hoarseness in 50% of cases. Clinical practice in HSDI includes the elective use of topical anesthesia (TA), but without defined recommendations and indications for use, and a potential altering effect of TA on the phonation process has not been unequivocally proven. The aim of this prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was to examine th

A Process Selection Framework for Purifying Rat IgG1 Monoclonal Antibodies from Hybridoma Culture Supernatants: CaptureSelect IgG-Fc for Speed and POROS 50 HS-Capto Q for Scale.

Efficient purification of rat-derived antibodies is an ongoing challenge in biologics development, particularly for isotypes that are difficult to capture using conventional affinity methods. Traditional Protein A/G affinity resins often exhibit limited efficiency and scalability for rat antibodies, particularly rat IgG1, which binds poorly to these ligands. Aside from efficiency and scalability concerns, broad application of affinity resins can be limited by sodium hydroxide ligand incompatibility. To address these limitations, we developed two alternative purification processes tailored to d

A Comparative Analysis of Low and High SiC Volume Fraction Additively Manufactured SiC/Ti6Al4V(ELI) Composites Based on the Best Process Parameters of Laser Power, Scanning Speed and Hatch Distance.

Silicon carbide (SiC) exhibits intriguing thermo-physical properties such as higher heat capacity and conductivity, as well as a lower density than Ti6Al4V(ELI). These properties make SiC a good candidate for the reinforcement of Ti6Al4V(ELI) with respect to its use as a heat shield in aero turbines to increase their efficiency. The traditional materials used in aircraft structures were required to have a combination of good mechanical properties such as strength, stiffness, and hardness and low weight, as well as low thermo-physical properties such as coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) an

A 2-year longitudinal randomized controlled trial examining the transfer of speed of processing training to secondary cognitive domains in middle-aged and older adults with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder: Results of the think fast study.

OBJECTIVE: As people with HIV (PWH) age, they are at-risk of developing cognitive impairments compared to their seronegative counterparts. Although speed of processing (SOP) training may help improve this cognitive ability, less work has examined transfer to other cognitive domains. This study examined the effect of SOP training has on secondary cognitive domains in PWH aged 40+ years. METHOD: In this 3-group 2-year longitudinal study, 216 PWH with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) or borderline HAND were randomized to either: (1) 10 h of SOP training (n = 70); (2) 20 h of SOP tra

Rapid Automatized Naming in Children with Dyslexia: Is Inhibitory Control Involved?

Rapid automatized naming (RAN) is widely seen as an important indicator of dyslexia. The nature of the cognitive processes involved in rapid naming is however still a topic of controversy. We hypothesized that in addition to the involvement of phonological processes and processing speed, RAN is a function of inhibition processes, in particular of interference control. A total 86 children with dyslexia and 31 normal readers were recruited. Our results revealed that in addition to phonological processing and processing speed, interference control predicts rapid naming in dyslexia, but in contras

Relationships among cognitive deficits and component skills of reading in younger and older students with developmental dyslexia.

Processing speed deficits along with phonological awareness deficits have been identified as risk factors for dyslexia. This study was designed to examine the behavioral profiles of two groups, a younger (6-8 years) and an older (10-15 years) group of dyslexic children for the purposes of (1) evaluating the degree to which phonological awareness and processing speed deficits occur in the two developmental cohorts; (2) determining the strength of relationships between the groups' respective mean scores on cognitive tasks of phonological awareness and processing speed and their scores on compone

Factors That Moderate Activity Limitation and Participation Restriction in People With Multiple Sclerosis.

We examined the variables most associated with activity limitation (i.e., cooking) and participation restriction (i.e., employment) in 72 people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Participants underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery assessing memory, executive functions, visual perception, and processing speed and completed questionnaires assessing activity, participation, fatigue, and affective symptoms. Results showed that processing speed was the only variable consistently significantly related to both activity and participation. When examining specific aspects of activity and

Mind the Mood: Momentary Depression and Anxiety Moderate the Correspondence Between Subjective and Objective Cognitive Functioning in Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Subjective cognitive dysfunction (SCD) affects 55-75% of individuals with fibromyalgia (FM), but those reporting cognitive difficulties often lack corresponding objective deficits. Symptoms of depression and anxiety are prevalent in FM and may account for part of this discrepancy. This study was undertaken to investigate whether momentary (within-day, across 7 days) changes in mood moderate the relationship between within-the-moment SCD and mental processing speed performance. METHODS: A total of 50 individuals with FM (mean age 44.8 years, mean education 15.7 years, 88% female, 86

Naming problems do not reflect a second independent core deficit in dyslexia: double deficits explored.

The double deficit hypothesis states that naming speed problems represent a second core deficit in dyslexia independent from a phonological deficit. The current study investigated the main assumptions of this hypothesis in a large sample of well-diagnosed dyslexics. The three main findings were that (a) naming speed was consistently related only to reading speed; (b) phonological processing speed and naming speed loaded on the same factor, and this factor contributed strongly to reading speed; and (c) although general processing speed was involved in speeded naming of visual items, it did not

Structural Neural Correlates of Double Decision Performance in Older Adults.

Speed of processing is a cognitive domain that encompasses the speed at which an individual can perceive a given stimulus, interpret the information, and produce a correct response. Speed of processing has been shown to decline more rapidly than other cognitive domains in an aging population, suggesting that this domain is particularly vulnerable to cognitive aging (Chee et al., 2009). However, given the heterogeneity of neuropsychological measures used to assess the domains underpinning speed of processing, a diffuse pattern of brain regions has been implicated. The current study aims to inve

Youth pre-pandemic executive function relates to year one COVID-19 difficulties.

INTRODUCTION: The first year of the COVID-19 pandemic presented a series of stressors that could relate to psychological difficulties in children and adolescents. Executive functioning (EF) supports goal achievement and is associated with life success, and better outcomes following early life adversity. EF is also strongly related to processing speed, another predictor of life outcomes. METHODS: This longitudinal study examined 149 youths' pre-pandemic EF and processing speed abilities as predictors of self-reported emotional, cognitive, and social experiences during the first year of the COV

Maternal prenatal choline and inflammation effects on 4-year-olds' performance on the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-IV.

Maternal gestational inflammation from infection, obesity, depression, and adverse childhood experiences negatively affects offspring cognitive development. Choline is a key nutrient in fetal brain development. We investigated whether higher maternal plasma choline concentrations have a positive association with offspring cognition, specifically processing speed, in the presence of inflammation. Forty-eight children were evaluated at 4 years of age. Processing Speed Composite Score on the Wechsler Preschool & Primary Scales of Intelligence was the principal outcome. Maternal C-reactive protein
