The Evolution of Cardiac Rehabilitation Since COVID-19.

BACKGROUND & AIM: During the COVID-19 pandemic, cardiac rehabilitation programs (CRPs) rapidly transitioned to virtual, mostly one-to-one, care. Four years later, the lasting effects on contemporary program delivery are unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the evolution of CRPs pre-COVID-19 to present (February-August 2024) in Canada. METHODS: A questionnaire was disseminated to Canadian CRP managers. RESULTS: Of 260 CRPs, 108 representatives of 150 CRPs (57.7%) responded. Since pre-COVID-19, there has been a reduction in proportion of CRPs offering a traditional in-person program

Second Language Word Learning through Repetition and Imitation: Functional Networks as a Function of Learning Phase and Language Distance.

Introduction and Aim: Repetition and imitation are among the oldest second language (L2) teaching approaches and are frequently used in the context of L2 learning and language therapy, despite some heavy criticism. Current neuroimaging techniques allow the neural mechanisms underlying repetition and imitation to be examined. This fMRI study examines the influence of verbal repetition and imitation on network configuration. Integration changes within and between the cognitive control and language networks were studied, in a pair of linguistically close languages (Spanish and French), and compar

Development of speech and language following bilateral frontal lesions.

Language and speech were studied in a young child with perinatally acquired bifrontal lesions. Bilateral frontal pathology seriously interfered with the development of intelligible speech and resulted in a persistent expressive aphasia. Analysis of the neuropsychological profile indicated impairments in intelligence and language comprehension. These deficits, however, were considered secondary to the profound speech programming disorder. The findings indicate that, despite the plasticity of the immature central nervous system, bilateral frontal injury sustained at an early age precludes the de

Federal civil rights policy and mental health treatment access for persons with limited English proficiency.

As noted in the supplement to the U.S. Surgeon General's report on mental health (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2001), overcoming language access barriers associated with limited English proficiency (LEP) should help to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in mental health care access and quality. Federal policy requires remedial action to overcome language barriers: Under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Medicaid and other federally funded programs must provide assistance to LEP persons. Some state-level public and mental health authorities have responded by instit

Group lidcombe program treatment for early stuttering: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: This study adds to the Lidcombe Program evidence base by comparing individual and group treatment of preschoolers who stutter. METHOD: A randomized controlled trial of 54 preschoolers was designed to establish whether group delivery outcomes were not inferior to the individual model. The group arm used a rolling group model, in which a new member entered an existing group each time a vacancy became available. Assessments were conducted prerandomization and 9 months and 18 months postrandomization. RESULTS: There was no evidence of a difference between treatment arms for measures of

A C+ + class library foundation for developing an electronic medical record.

The basic features that gave the M (or Mumps, as it originally called) language its initial popularity are still important to many programming applications, especially those involving the health care domain. To date, however, efforts to change the language have been predicated on the axiom that the existing structure must be preserved in order to accommodate legacy applications. To many, it is becoming clear that the 1960s' minicomputer induced interpreter syntax underlying M is inadequate and incapable of further evolution. In this paper, we demonstrate an alternative that preserves those fea

Cognitive Abilities and Their Implications for Language and Speech Disorders-Insights From Phoniatric Practice.

Children with language and speech disorders account for approximately 5%-12% of children have language and speech disorders globally. Understanding the cognitive abilities of these children is crucial for identifying how cognitive skills influence speech fluency, language production, and planning effective intervention programs. Subtle differences in cognitive performance have been noted to affect developmental language skills. Therefore, we aimed to compare the cognitive abilities of children with language impairments and stuttering to typically developing controls. Our study was conducted on

The lab streaming layer for synchronized multimodal recording.

Accurately recording the interactions of humans or other organisms with their environment and other agents requires synchronized data access via multiple instruments, often running independently using different clocks. Active, hardware-mediated solutions are often infeasible or prohibitively costly to build and run across arbitrary collections of input systems. The Lab Streaming Layer (LSL) framework offers a software-based approach to synchronizing data streams based on per-sample time stamps and time synchronization across a common local area network (LAN). Built from the ground up for neuro

Selection of key genes for dilated cardiomyopathy based on machine learning algorithms and assessment of diagnostic accuracy.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms of the occurrence and progression of dilated cardiomyopathy are still unclear and further exploration is needed. The upgrading of programming languages and the improvement of biological databases have created conditions for us to explore the structural and functional information of biological molecules at the nucleic acid and protein levels, screen key pathogenic genes, and elucidate pathogenic mechanisms. This study aimed to screen key pathogenic genes using machine learning algorithms and explore the correlation between key genes and immune microenvironment through

Real-time data processing in colorimetry camera-based single-molecule localization microscopy via CPU-GPU-FPGA heterogeneous computation.

Because conventional low-light cameras used in single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) do not have the ability to distinguish colors, it is often necessary to employ a dedicated optical system and/or a complicated image analysis procedure to realize multi-color SMLM. Recently, researchers explored the potential of a new kind of low-light camera called colorimetry camera as an alternative detector in multi-color SMLM, and achieved two-color SMLM under a simple optical system, with a comparable cross-talk to the best reported values. However, extracting images from all color channels is a

Reading, syntactic, orthographic, and working memory skills of bilingual Arabic-English speaking Canadian children.

This study assessed the reading, language, and memory skills of 56 bilingual Arab-Canadian children age's 9-14. English was their main instructional language, and Arabic was the language spoken at home. All children attended a Heritage Language Program in Toronto where they were taught to read and write Arabic. The children were administered word and pseudo-word reading, language, and working memory tests in English and Arabic. The majority of the children showed at least adequate proficiency in both languages. There was a significant relationship between the acquisition of word and pseudo-wor

Parenting Interventions That Promote Child Protection and Development for Preschool-Age Children with Developmental Disabilities: A Global Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Global guidelines emphasize the critical role of responsive caregiving in terms of reducing violence against children and promoting early childhood development. However, there is an absence of global evidence synthesis on the effects of early childhood parenting programs for children with developmental disabilities. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to investigate the effectiveness of parenting interventions delivered for preschool-age children with developmental disabilities in reducing violence against children, altering violence-related factors, and promoting child development.

You can't fight in here! This is BBS!

Norm, the formal theoretical linguist, and Claudette, the computational language scientist, have a lovely time discussing whether modern language models can inform important questions in the language sciences. Just as they are about to part ways until they meet again, 25 of their closest friends show up - from linguistics, neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, philosophy, and computer science. We use this discussion to highlight what we see as some common underlying issues: the String Statistics Strawman (the mistaken idea that LMs can't be linguistically competent or interesting becaus

Words matter: a call for humanizing and respectful language to describe people who experience incarceration.

BACKGROUND: Words matter when describing people involved in the criminal justice system because language can have a significant impact upon health, wellbeing, and access to health information and services. However, terminology used in policies, programs, and research publications is often derogatory, stigmatizing, and dehumanizing. DISCUSSION: In response, health experts from Europe, the United States, and Australia recommend that healthcare professionals, researchers, and policy makers working with people in detention follow key principles that foster constructive and humanizing language. Establishing best-practice statements for post-custody community transition: Insights from a modified Delphi study.

INTRODUCTION: The transition from custody to community is a critical juncture for people exiting custody, necessitating substantial support. However, the programs and services providing this support are often fragmented and lack a unified approach in terms of terminology, design, resourcing, timing, delivery, and monitoring and evaluation. This study sought to establish an agreed terminology and promote a broader consensus on best practices relating to these programs and services. METHODS: We used a two-phased Delphi methodology to provide a structured, formal, and iterative process for gathe

What About Language?: A Mixed Methods Examination of the Impact of Person-Centered Language on Students' Perceptions of Individuals Who Commit Sex Offenses.

Person-centered language is a well-known approach to reducing stigmatizing labels among marginalized groups. However, little research has explored person-centered language's impact in criminal justice classrooms. Utilizing a mixed-method research design, this study explores the impact of person-centered language on students' perceptions of persons convicted of sex offenses. The study used three sections of an online Sex Crimes course. The course sections were identical, except for the language used and awareness of person-centered language; the control group section did not utilize person-cent
