[Does proprioception of the extrinsic eye muscles participate in equilibrium, vision and oculomotor action?].

Extrinsic eye muscles respond to both proprioceptive and visual impulses. Histology of ocular proprioceptive receptors shows them to be qualitatively and original, neuromuscular bundles are found in primates, and so called "palisade sensory nerve endings" in felines. Golgi's osteotendinous receptors are apparently absent. The number of muscle receptors is high and their proportion in relation to muscle weight even more so. The afferent pathway for this sensory system initially accompanies the motor fibers of oculomotor III, IV, ans VI nerves. Some fibers continue with these nerves to the brain

Human infants are able to combine visual and proprioceptive target information in reaching.

Actions are based on estimations about world and bodily states, which are derived from partially redundant noisy sensory signals. To reduce the impact of sensory noise, signals from various senses are combined in a Bayes optimal manner in adults. In children, multisensory integration has been typically found to be Bayes optimal from 8 to 10 years of age and beyond. Implication for early motor development might be that infants base their actions on only one sensory modality, or, potentially, infants do already combine the senses in some - though likely suboptimal - way. Here, 7-month-old infant

Proprioceptive deficits following a traumatic anterior shoulder instability: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Proprioception, our limb awareness in space, plays a vital role in maintaining shoulder stability through neuromuscular control. Following traumatic anterior instability (TAI), proprioceptive deficits can exist, potentially impairing upper limb function. However, the extent and nature of these deficits vary, with each injury potentially presenting unique proprioceptive deficit profiles. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the available evidence on proprioceptive deficits following TAI, compared to healthy controls, or the contralateral upper-limb. METHODS: Literatur

Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation warm-ups: a key to improved isokinetic performance.

This study examined the immediate effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation warm-ups on isokinetic strength, endurance, and body balance in 50 football players. Data collection spanned four sessions, each separated by full rest. The isokinetic strength of the hip, knee, and ankle flexion and extension was measured using a dynamometer at 60°/s, 180°/s, and 240°/s. Endurance was assessed at 240°/s through 25 repetitions, analyzing peak torque changes. On the first day, participants performed general warm-ups followed by balance and strength tests. Subsequent sessions repeated these te

Proprioceptive Sensing in Soft Robotic Arms Using Soft Strain Sensors.

Soft robots actively interact with their environment, exhibiting large distributed deformations due to their structural compliance. These features make them ideal for applications in wearable robotics, medical devices, and assistive technologies. However, a major challenge in their development is integrating sensory systems that do not constrain their movements while enabling accurate estimation of the end-effector position. This work focuses on addressing this limitation in the context of a soft robotic arm. Commercial piezoresistive textile Electrolycra was identified as a suitable candidate

Investigating the Effect of Elevation and Sex-Based Differences on Shoulder Proprioceptive Accuracy.

BACKGROUND: Evaluating shoulder proprioception provides functional data that supplement imaging for the diagnosis/rehabilitation of rotator cuff injuries. There is a need for a system capable of establishing normal ranges for proprioceptive accuracy in healthy shoulders during unrestricted 3-dimensional motion. PURPOSE: To conduct passive joint position sense (JPS) testing in men and women with no history of shoulder injury using a novel testing system, identifying differences in proprioceptive accuracy based on sex, shoulder elevation, and crossbody position. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled labora

A compact solution for vibrotactile proprioceptive feedback of wrist rotation and hand aperture.

BACKGROUND: Closing the control loop between users and their prostheses by providing artificial sensory feedback is a fundamental step toward the full restoration of lost sensory-motor functions. METHODS: We propose a novel approach to provide artificial proprioceptive feedback about two degrees of freedom using a single array of 8 vibration motors (compact solution). The performance afforded by the novel method during an online closed-loop control task was compared to that achieved using the conventional approach, in which the same information was conveyed using two arrays of 8 and 4 vibromo

The effect of proprioceptive vestibular rehabilitation on sensory-motor symptoms and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral vestibular hypofunction (PVH) is characterized by balance and gait disorders and vestibulo-autonomic findings. The vestibular system and proprioceptive system work together to regulate sensorimotor functions. Vestibular exercises are effective in PVH, but their superiority over each other is still unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the effect of proprioceptive vestibular exercises on patients with PVH. METHODS: 30 individuals with unilateral PVH were assigned to 3 groups. Group 1 received proprioceptive vestibular rehabilitation, group 2 received standard v

Effects of proprioceptive training on ankle muscle strength in fencers: A clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Fencing is a combat sport, which depends of lower limbs muscular strength and neuromuscular function. Because of that, approximately half of all injuries occur in lower limbs, especially in ankle. Thus, the objective of this study was to verify the influence of a twelve-week proprioceptive training program on ankle muscular strength and muscular balance in fencers. METHODS: The study was a clinical trial, with 19 fencing athletes from 14 to 35-year-old. The main outcome was ankle invertors, evertors, plantiflexors and dorsiflexors muscular strength and ankle muscle balance. The st

LSVT-BIG therapy in Parkinson's disease: physiological evidence for proprioceptive recalibration.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence for proprioceptive dysfunction in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The Lee Silvermann Voice Treatment-BIG therapy (LSVT-BIG), a special training program aiming at an increase of movement amplitudes in persons with PD (PwPD), has shown to be effective on motor symptoms. LSVT-BIG is conceptionally based on improving bradykinesia, in particular the decrement of repetitive movements, by proprioceptive recalibration. OBJECTIVE: To assess proprioceptive impairment in PwPD as compared to matched controls and to probe potential recalibration effects of the

Proprioceptive muscle tendon stimulation reduces symptoms in primary orthostatic tremor.

INTRODUCTION: Primary orthostatic tremor (OT) is characterized by high-frequency lower limb muscle contractions and a disabling sense of unsteadiness while standing. To date, therapeutic options for OT are limited. Here, we examined the effects of proprioceptive leg muscle stimulation via muscle tendon vibration (MTV) on tremor and balance control in patients with primary OT. METHODS: Tremor in nine patients with primary OT was examined during four conditions: standing (1), standing with MTV on the bilateral soleus muscles (2), lying (3), and lying with MTV (4). Tremor characteristics were as

Neural predictors of motor control and impact of visuo-proprioceptive information in youth.

For successful motor control, the central nervous system is required to combine information from the environment and the current body state, which is provided by vision and proprioception respectively. We investigated the relative contribution of visual and proprioceptive information to upper limb motor control and the extent to which structural brain measures predict this performance in youth (n = 40; age range 9-18 years). Participants performed a manual tracking task, adopting in-phase and anti-phase coordination modes. Results showed that, in contrast to older participants, younger partici

Limb position drift results from misalignment of proprioceptive and visual maps.

Previous work (Brown et al., 2003a,b) has shown that limb position drifts when individuals make repetitive movements in the absence of visual feedback. The purpose of this study was to examine whether limb position drift might reflect a misalignment in visual and proprioceptive maps by examining the nature of information used to specify new movements from a drifted limb position. In a virtual reality (VR) environment, participants made continuous movements with their dominant right hand between two targets positioned 15cm apart, paced by a 0.625-Hz metronome. After 5 cycles, cursor feedback of

The contribution of visual and proprioceptive information to the perception of leaning in a dynamic motorcycle simulator.

Compared with driving or flight simulation, little is known about self-motion perception in riding simulation. The goal of this study was to examine whether or not continuous roll motion supports the sensation of leaning into bends in dynamic motorcycle simulation. To this end, riders were able to freely tune the visual scene and/or motorcycle simulator roll angle to find a pattern that matched their prior knowledge. Our results revealed idiosyncrasy in the combination of visual and proprioceptive information. Some subjects relied more on the visual dimension, but reported increased sickness s

Visuo-proprioceptive interactions in degenerative cervical spine diseases requiring surgery.

Cervical proprioception plays a key role in postural control, but its specific contribution is controversial. Postural impairment was shown in whiplash injuries without demonstrating the sole involvement of the cervical spine. The consequences of degenerative cervical spine diseases are underreported in posture-related scientific literature in spite of their high prevalence. No report has focused on the two different mechanisms underlying cervicobrachial pain: herniated discs and spondylosis. This study aimed to evaluate postural control of two groups of patients with degenerative cervical spi

Deficits in the ability to use proprioceptive feedback in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

Compared with motor impairment in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP), less attention has been paid to sensory feedback processing deficits. This includes, especially, proprioceptive information regarding arm position. This study examined the ability of children with hemiplegic CP to use proprioceptive feedback during a goal-directed target-matching task. Eight children with hemiplegic CP and eight typically developing children performed proprioceptively guided matching of elbow position with either arm. Between groups, it was found that matching errors were significantly greater for

Changes in processing of proprioceptive information in Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy.

OBJECTIVE: Changes in processing of proprioceptive information are known in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) and may contribute to motor deficits. This study used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to investigate the processing of proprioceptive information induced by muscle vibration (MV) in 10 patients with IPD and 10 patients with multiple system atrophy of the parkinsonian type (MSA-P) in comparison to 10 controls. METHODS: Single and paired-pulses were used, and motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded in the extensor and flexor carpi radialis muscles (ECR and FCR) without a

The effects of repetitive proprioceptive stimulation on corticomotor representation in intact and hemiplegic individuals.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of a passive wrist movement intervention on cortical representation of forearm musculature. METHODS: Transcranial magnetic stimulation was used to map cortical representation of a forearm flexor muscle in healthy individuals and in individuals following stroke before and immediately after a 30 min session of passive wrist movement. RESULTS: In the healthy individuals, no changes in map area or map centre of gravity were noted after the intervention; however, map volume increased significantly across all subjects. In the stroke patient group there were no s

A new form of congenital proprioceptive sensory neuropathy associated with arthrogryposis multiplex.

We report two siblings who presented with non-progressive marked sensory ataxia associated with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC). Deep tendon reflexes and H reflex were completely absent, but F waves were preserved. The sensory nerve conduction studies indicated the presence of relatively mild sensory polyneuropathy. The conventional somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) showed mildly prolonged latency for both the peripheral and cortical responses, suggesting a slowed conduction through the peripheral as well as central pathway. However, the 'proprioceptive SEPs' were absent, in conf

Responses of neurons in the central cervical nucleus of the rat to proprioceptive and vestibular inputs.

Activity of neurons in the central cervical nucleus (CCN) was recorded extracellularly in decerebrate, immobilized rats. Neurons were identified by their antidromic response to electrical stimulation of the contralateral superior cerebellar peduncle. Stimulation of the ipsilateral dorsal neck muscles (m. biventer cervicis and complexus [BCC]; m. splenius [S]) by a single electric pulse evoked a short-latency (approximately 1 ms) excitatory response in the majority of CCN neurons. The response was usually followed by a period of inhibition of the resting discharge (approximately 20 ms). Stimula
